Schenke CHARLESTON - Dr. Lahron Helgeson Schenke, age 89 of Charleston, passed away on Wednesday ( September 23, 2009 ) at his home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston and in accordance with his wishes his body will be cremated and there will be no Visitation or Services. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts in his honor may be made to the Coles County Animal Shelter and can be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920. Lahron was born in Shawano , Wisconsin on November 17, 1919 a son of the late Otto and Charity (Helgeson) Schenke. He married Phyllis Langner on April 4, 1942 in Madison, Wisconsin and they have shared more than sixty-seven years of marriage and friendship. In addition to Phyllis he is survived by his daughter, Pamela Atteberry and her husband Keith of Charleston. He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Schenke. Lahron served with the United States Air Force during World War II and was also an instructor at both Scott and Langley Air Force Bases. He received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and his Doctorate in 1954 from Teachers College - Columbia University in New York. He taught mostly Science, Math and Psychology in Wisconsin, Missouri, Illinois, Louisiana and Virginia as well as at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls; Milwaukee School of Engineering in Wisconsin and at Drury College in Springfield, Missouri. From 1963 until his retirement in 1983, Dr. Schenke was a Professor of Education at Eastern Illinois University. He was a member of the Charleston Country Club and an avid golfer. His hobbies included woodworking, restoring antiques, flower and vegetable gardening and caring for his pets - and he usually had several. He cherished his family and loved them dearly. Phyllis, Pam and Keith, along with Lahron's friends will treasure their many fond memories.
