Herb, an emeritus physics professor whose distinguished career helped establish UW-Madison as a world leader in nuclear physics, will be remembered Saturday at a memorial service at the First Unitarian Society Meeting House, 900 University Bay Dr. The service, open to the public, begins at 3 p.m. Herb, who died Oct. 1 at age 88, spent nearly four decades on the UW-Madison physics faculty, and more than 30 years as founder and executive of the Middleton-based National Electrostatics Corp. Accelerators manufactured and sold by National Electrostatics are now used all over the world, including the Louvre Museum in Paris, to detect forgeries in art; and Oxford University in Oxford, England, to help determine the causes of Alzheimer's disease. Herb won several awards for his accomplishments, including the Bonner Award in nuclear physics, membership in the National Academy of Sciences, and honorary degrees from universities in Brazil, Switzerland and Sweden. He was born in Navarino, Wis., and went to graduate school at UW-Madison. After earning his doctorate, Herb joined the physics faculty.
