On April 21, 1953, she was united in marriage to Frank Hable in Phlox. The couple later divorced. Joan had worked for Weinbrenner Factory Shoe, Antigo for a short time. After retiring from the family farm she was employed at the former B&B Café, Birnamwood and the Homme Youth and Family Programs, Wittenberg. She was then a foster grandmother for the Antigo School District. Joan was a member of St. Johns Catholic Church, Antigo and the Christian Mothers Society. She was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to music and playing the piano and drums. She also enjoyed cooking, Bingo and playing cards, often using her famous quote ?I paid!? Joan also had her ?Masters Degree? as a ?Domestic Engineer?. Survivors include one son, John Eckart, Germantown, WI; one daughter, Caroline (Joseph) Babich, Milwaukee; one brother, Frank Suess, Birnamwood; two sisters, Bertha Bauer, Birnamwood and Theresa Gardner, Hayward; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Rose was preceded in death by a son, Edward and a daughter, Helen. Funeral services were held July 11, 1977 at St. Philomena Catholic Church, Birnamwood. Survivors include three sons, Edwin (Evelyn) Bauer, Racine, Ludwig (Christine) Bauer, Jr., Antigo and William (Mary Ann) Bauer, Aniwa; three daughters, Mildred Gilmore, West Allis, Marcella (LeRoy) Baneck, Byhalia, MS and Rose (Harvey) Blyton, Birnamwood; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Bertha was preceded in death by two sons, two brothers, including Frank Suess, Sr., two sisters, Rose Eckart and Theresa Gardner, a grandson, Raymond Bauer and a great-granddaughter.
