GROW - 1934- 2009 Most people come away from 50th class reunions with some old memories and a souvenir program. Annette M. Grow took home the renewal of old feelings that led to a new marriage and a second chance. "They met again at their 50th grammar school reunion in 1998," said her daughter Maureen Webb. "They got married the following year. She was a widow and he was a widower." Mrs. Grow, 74, died of leukemia June 21 at Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elk Grove Village. Her second husband, William E. Grow Sr., knew her from St. Vincent Ferrer Grade School in River Forest when she was Annette Steupak. They were friends through high school. Then she went to Rosary College in River Forest and got married. "I went to a university and the Army and got married," Grow said. "My wife died in 1979, and I raised four children." Her first husband was Richard F. Murray Sr., a real estate developer. They raised seven children in Carpentersville; Shawano , Wis.; Seattle, and Kankakee. Mr. Murray was disabled by a severe heart attack in 1976 and died in 1993. She then moved to Schertz, Texas. Fast forward to 1998. She and Grow both decide to go to the big 50th reunion. "We went to this reunion, and something just clicked again," Grow said. "Then it was a wonderful time for us." Her daughter, Maureen Webb, was living in Schertz also, when her mother returned from her trip to Illinois. "We were were sitting on the back porch and she said, 'I think I'm going to move.' " Webb recalled. "I said, 'What do you mean, Ma?' She said, 'I think I'm going to get married.' I got on my cell phone and called my sister, Mary Jo, and said, 'You better get over here. Ma's thinking about getting married.' " Her son, John T. Murray Sr., got the word in a hotel room in New Orleans, where a hurricane had knocked out the lights and power. "Chaos was swirling around me and she proceeds to tell me that she has fallen in love and wants to get married," he said. "I said, 'I'm OK with that, Mom, but I'm going to have to get back to you. My phone is running out of juice.' " Her son, Richard T. Murray Jr., and her youngest daughter, Maureen, were sharing a Chicago apartment when they got the call. "I have something to discuss with you," she told him. "It's about 'affairs of the heart.' '' "It's a wonderfully quaint phrase," Richard Murray said. "That's how she was. She was a real lady." He remembered growing up in a big Victorian house in Kankakee, which she completely restored inside. She also refinished antique furniture and loved to be the hostess for big family parties. He picked up an interest in remodeling from his mother and became a New York TV set designer. "I've worked on soap operas," he said. "She lived in a soap opera. Most people thought it was out of the realm of believability to find love again after 50 years." Mary Jo Gibson was her first daughter and remembers living in Carpentersville "when it was new." They moved to Shawano , where they spent a lot of family time on Shawano Lake. If the 1950s in Carpentersville was "Ozzie and Harriet," she said, " Shawano was the rebellious '60s." Her mother had one golden rule about coming home past curfew, Gibson said. "She would be sitting on the curb with a cup of coffee, when you got home," Gibson said. "She said, 'Don't wake your father.' That was the rule. We needed to get in the door and into bed without waking him." About two years ago, Mrs. Grow was diagnosed with "preleukemia," her husband said. "So, the last two years were difficult for her. But I had a wonderful life with her before that. It's quite a story. People say it sounds like a fairy tale. But it's not, with this ending." Her other survivors include another son, Thomas Murray; two daughters, Marie J. Kennedy and Margaret Ferguson; 13 grandchildren; a sister, Joan Steupak; and a brother, Joseph Steupak. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. today at Salerno's Rosedale Chapels, 450 W. Lake Street, Roselle. Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Phillip the Apostle Church, Lombard and Holt, Addison. Interment in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside. Huntington: 1913- 2009- Shopping center developer - Had role in Ford City, Edens Plaza Chicago Tribune (IL) - , January 27, 2009 Author: Patricia Trebe, SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE John L. Huntington left the law profession at the start of the 1950s for new challenges in the fledgling field of shopping center development. "He was a pioneer," said his son, John. "He found the practice of law unfulfilling and at the time was looking for something interesting, a little more people-oriented and sales-oriented. And he was very good at it." Mr. Huntington helped with the development of 20 shopping centers in the Midwest, including Hillside Shopping Center, Ford City on Chicago's Southwest Side and Edens Plaza in Wilmette. Mr. Huntington, 95, of Elmhurst died of complications of cancer Tuesday, Jan. 20, in Lexington Health Care in Elmhurst. Born in Shawano , Wis., Mr. Huntington was the captain of the debate team at Shawano High School his senior year. He graduated from Beloit College in 1935 and moved to Chicago to work for the Chicago Title & Trust Co. while he attended law school at Loyola University at night. He graduated in 1939. He joined Prudential Life Insurance in 1938 and worked in the law department until World War II. He enlisted in 1942 and served as a captain in the Army with the 716th Tank Battalion as a tank commander. After his discharge in 1945 he returned to Prudential and was there until 1950 when he left the profession to join L.J. Sheridan & Co. and begin his career in real estate and shopping center development. In 1964 he left L.J. Sheridan to become president of Harry F. Chaddick Realty Inc. and stayed there until he formed his own firm five years later. John L. Huntington & Co. in Oak Brook specializes in leasing shopping centers, office space and industrial space. He didn't retire until 2007, said his son, who now runs the business. Mr. Huntington was a member of Rotary International's Rotary One club in Chicago. When he moved to the suburbs he transferred to the Oak Brook Noon Rotary organization. Prompted by his days as a debater in high school, Mr. Huntington started a debate contest in DuPage County in the 1970s. The contest, sponsored by Rotary, ran for more than 15 years. "He would have the trials and select the most talented and ... the winners would speak to the club," said Bill Sutton, a member of the Hinsdale Oak Brook Sunrise Rotary International and former member with Mr. Huntington at the Oak Brook Noon Rotary International. "He was the one who started it and he ran it all." Mr. Huntington was married in 1943 and divorced decades later, said his son. Other survivors include three daughters, Patricia Berry, Mary Huntington-Lehner and Judy; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services were private. Whether he was designing a highway, building a bookshelf or analyzing his golf swing, he believed the world could be broken down to a scientific level. Mr. Rickert, 86, a highway design engineer for Illinois for nearly 40 years, was found dead Wednesday in his Marengo home. Born in Shawano , Wis., Mr. Rickert was a bombardier in World War II with the 15th Air Force in Bari, Italy. He flew more than 55 missions over enemy territory, his family said. After the war, he wanted to be an architect at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. But the school didn't offer such a program, so he studied civil engineering. In the early 1950s, he became a design engineer for Illinois, helping to build its tollway system. He developed a keen understanding of how to build a cloverleaf exit ramp and how to shape land to build roads smooth and straight. Mr. Rickert took pride in creating highways that lasted and was upset by the trend of building them with asphalt, which requires repairs as often as every five years, instead of concrete, which can go 30 years before a major rehabilitation. "It irritated the life of him to see potholes," said his daughter Claudia Garrison. Although he designed some of Illinois' tollways, Mr. Rickert refused to drive on them. He believed the intent of the tolls was to pay for construction costs and then become freeways. So when he drove from Marengo to Chicago, it took a long time because he traveled back roads. His mind was uniquely wired for engineering. About two years ago, six weeks after surgery for colon cancer, he tried to replace a water heater in the basement by lifting it up the stairs with a pulley system before his two daughters talked him out of it. He liked working with his hands. In 1954, he built his own house. In the basement, he crafted tables and bookshelves out of black walnut. Mr. Rickert was old school. Although his daughters bought him a computer, he never used it, choosing to keep hand-drawn graphs of all his stocks using a slide rule to calculate yields and rates of return. He also took a scientific approach to his golf game. He had his daughter Kitz Rickert take pictures of his golf swing so he could analyze it and make improvements. After he got a hole-in-one, he built a small wooden stand to mount the lucky golf ball. Growing up during the Depression, Mr. Rickert developed a strong belief in not only spending money wisely, but making those purchases last a long time. When he received a new shirt for Christmas, he wouldn't wear it right away. He would place it in a drawer for about a year, then begin wearing once when another shirt wore out. Some might have called him frugal, but Mr. Rickert was thinking about the future. "He believed you follow a path in life so that you're not going to be a burden to anybody in your old age," Garrison said. Mr. Rickert overcame colon cancer, prostate cancer and three bouts of bladder cancer, his family said. After he died, his daughters found plans for re-insulating the house, a library book on small-cap stocks and detailed instructions on how to sort out the house and accounts after he was gone. It was a fitting example of a man who always took the long view. "Although he wasn't a Boy Scout, he believed in the motto 'Always be prepared,'" Garrison said. He is also survived by two grandsons, Matthew and Christopher Garrison, and a sister, Martha Adams. A service is set for 2 p.m. Monday in Linden Ridge, 841 County Rd. NN East, Mukwonago, Wis.
