The cause of the fire that killed Allen Pitt has not yet been determined, the Shawano County Sheriff's Department said. He had been heating his home with small electric heaters and the home was fully engulfed in flames when authorities arrived, said Bonduel fire chief Robbie Woldt. The trailer was owned by relatives. Pitt had been living in trailers since his previous home was destroyed in a fire about 10 years ago, his family said. Pitt was a former professional opera performer and farmer. The State Fire Marshal's Office is helping with the investigation. VERONA - William R. Pollow, age 83, died on Friday, March 2, 2007, at the Waunakee Manor Care Center. He was born on Aug. 25, 1923, in Cross Plains, the son of William C. and Ann (Hommerding) Pollow. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Verona. He lived on his beloved "100 Year Farm" from 1932 until he moved to "The Lighthouse" assisted living facility in July 2005. The farm was sold for future development. The jewel of the pending Crosspoint development of the former Pollow farmset may involve a small plot of untouched natural prairie and hopefully this can be worked into the green spaces of the future development. The family would love to have this parcel named, the "Pollow Prairie" in honor of the Pollow family's longtime standing in the Verona area. He spent the last two months of his life rehabilitating at the Waunakee Manor Care Center. He was quick to laugh and was known for his enthusiastic wave to friends and even to strangers. He loved to "high five" h! is fellow residents when he moved to the assisted care facility. His favorite past times were watching state sports, game shows and playing bingo. He had a profound love for animals. His legs did not work, but his heart did for 83 years, until it finally failed him on Friday, March 2, 2007. Survivors include, Bernice Legro and sons, Ron (Michele) Legro of Milwaukee, Larry (Carol) Legro of Sun Prairie, David (Pam) Legro and son, Tyler Legro of Weston, Douglas (Cindy) Legro of Bonduel, Wis., Gene Legro of Antigo, Shari Legro of Antigo, John (Debbie) Legro of Deerbrook, Wis., Cathy (Collin) Legro, Eau Claire and Lorraine Marquardt of Shawano. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ruth; a brother, Edward; and a half-brother, Theron. Funeral services will be held at the JOYCE-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 118 N. Franklin St., Verona, on Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Sheryl Erickson will officiate with burial in the Verona Cemetery. RILEY A funeral Mass for John J. "Jack" Riley, 77, of 29 Lincoln Drive, will be said at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Alphonsus Church. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Mr. Riley died Saturday at Adirondack Medical Center, Saranac Lake. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, where an American Legion service will be held this evening. He worked with his mother and stepfather, Mary "Grandma" and Amos Robillard, at the Miss Tupper Diner. In the early 1960s he took over the box-style diner, which became well-known in the Adirondacks. In 1975 he leased the Tupper Lake Country Club, which he called the 19th Hole & Lounge, for the summers. In the winters he leased the bar and concession stand at the Big Tupper Ski Area and introduced the self-service salad bar. He then was head cook for 10 years for the state Department of Correctional Services at Bare Hill Correctional Facility, Malone. >From 1961 through 1964 he was American Legion Franklin County commander. He also was a member of the Tupper Lake Honor Guard and enjoyed hunting, fishing, cards, betting on horses, reading, watching movies and casino gambling. He was known for his good humor. Born Sept. 21, 1930, at Saranac Lake, son of John C. and Mary E. Cote Riley, he married Theresa Trombley on Oct. 7, 1950, at Holy Name Church, Faust. He joined the Army in May 1951 and served until 1957, when he was honorably discharged. Surviving besides his wife are a son and his wife, Michael and Rose Marie, Malone; three daughters and their husbands, Lynn and William Casey, Glens Falls, Mary T. and Lee Kohn, Bonduel, Wis., and Cynthia and Scot Dukett, Tupper Lake; a sister, Mary Jane Kennedy, Tupper Lake; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Werbelow Joan H. Werbelow (Hartwig) of West Bend, 69, died on Thursday, Oct., 16 2008. Born to Emil and Dora (Wolf) Hartwig on Nov. 26, 1938, in Bonduel. Joan graduated from Bonduel High School in 1957. She married Elmer L. Werbelow on Nov. 23, 1957. Joan worked at Regal Ware in Kewaskum from 1968 until 1970; she then worked as a nursing assistant at the Samaritan Home in West Bend from 1970 until 1977. From there, she worked the next 30 years at Serigraph Inc., where she was respected, admired and loved. She retired in April of 2007. Joan is survived by her spouse, Elmer L. Werbelow; her eight children, Rick (Claudette) Werbelow, Linda (Daryl) Duenkel, Bonnie (Kurt) Rasmussen, Gayle (Mark) Brodzeller, Cheryl (David) Filo, Daniel (Kelly) Werblow, Shawn Werbelow and Bryan Werbelow; 12 grandchildren, Jeramy (Tammy) Werbelow, Shane, Wayne, David, Rachel (Ryan) Koeferl, Bryanne, Nathan, Katelyn, Jesse, Shelby, Cierra and Conrad. She is further survived by her brothers, Kenneth Hartwig, Roger (Joy) Hartwig, David (Jeannie) Hartwig; and her sister, Ruth (Orvil) Hartleben. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her oldest son, Mark, on Aug. 21, 1976; her sister Ethel Lemberger; and one grandchild, Nicolas, who passed on Oct. 14, 1995. Joan was a baptized Jehovah's Witness. She had a very strong faith and hopes to see her family and friends again in the new system. Special thanks to the brothers and sisters at the Kingdom Hall, also to her friends and extended family for bringing meals and loving support. Extra thanks to the immediate family for working together and supporting one another. Mom loves us all and we will always love and deeply miss her. A funeral service for Joan will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel (1420 W. Paradise Drive, West Bend, WI 53095). Irene's enormous amount of energy and her continuous positive attitude drove her to constantly challenge herself and to be active in many things. "Can't be done" was never a part of her vocabulary. Above all, Irene would lend her support to her husband in the operation of the dairy farm and the many tasks of raising their family. Her leadership abilities were recognized in the 4-H club, where she would involve the entire family. Her beautiful alto voice was an inspiration to her children, and a highlight for Irene was to sing with family members at their gatherings. After the age of 40, she completed her GED and learned to play guitar. Irene was the vice president of the Democratic Legislator's Wives; was active in N.D. Right to Life, Raleigh Homemakers Club, Catholic Daughters of America, Christian Mothers and Christ the King Quilters. She also shared her talents by singing and playing guitar for the children's Mass at Christ the King. Her grandchildren will always cherish ! the afghans that she lovingly crocheted for each of them. She learned French so she could better communicate with her grandchildren who live in France. On June 23, 1934 she was united in marriage to Wallace Seering in Black Creek. After marriage the couple farmed and raised their family in the Town of Hartland. During that time, Arlene was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church in Bonduel where she was a member of the UWM, a choir member, former Loyal Worker and was a Sunday school teacher. A few years after Wally's death in 1973, Arlene and her son, Edward moved to sunny Tucson, AZ. While there, Arlene became a member of the 1st Church of God where she was a member of the Women of the Church of God and a member of the Keen Agers Group. After Ed's death in 2003, Arlene made a final move to California in 2007 to be closer to her daughter, Joy and her grandchildren. Arlene was a m! ember of Gideon's International and a member of the Christian Women. She enjoyed traveling and loved flowers and gardening. Harold MADISON - L. Harold 'Hal ' Hueschen passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Meriter Hospital while surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 16, 1920, in Sylvan Grove, Kan., to Erich and Ella (Kreft) Hueschen. He spent his early years in Bonduel, where his father was the principal of the Lutheran School. He finished high school at Concordia Prep School in River Forest, Ill. He attended the University of Wisconsin and was called into service in 1942. At Camp Lee, Va., he was accepted to Officers Candidate School and graduated as the outstanding cadet. On Sept. 5, 1943, he was married to Virginia McElwain at Bethel Lutheran Church in Madison. He served in the European Theater until September 1944 and acted as support services to General Patten through the Battle of the Bulge. From there he was sent to Okinawa traveling through the Panama Canal. He experienced the big typhoon in Okinawa and they had to live in a cave for three days. He returned to Madison in January 1946 and was honorably discharged as a captain in 1953. He completed his degree in business at the University of Wisconsin in Madison! . His occupations then included retail clothing in Chicago, retail jewelry in Madison and then he traveled for 26 years representing 'The Bethel Bible Series.' Hal retired in 1994 to homes in both the West and East sides of Madison. Three years ago, he started a new life of retirement at Oakwood East Residential Retirement Community. Hal is survived by his wife, Virginia of Madison; two sons, John (Judy) Hueschen of Madison, and Dr. Richard Hueschen (Dr. Denise Despres) of Cedar Crest, N.M.; two grandchildren, Peter (Jamee) Hueschen of Ixonia, and Kathleen (Kerry) Wang of Waunakee; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Grace (Lloyd) Fiehler of St. Louis, Mo., and Lois (Art) Lange of Aurora, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Hal was preceded in death by his parents, Erich and Ella Hueschen; and a brother, Robert Hueschen.
