Maurice was born Jan. 25, 1933, in Shawano, Wis., son of the late Maurice and Anna (Schultz) Hartleben, Sr. He was a graduate of St. James Lutheran School and Shawano High School, Class of 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean conflict. On April 22, 1961, he was united in marriage to Annabelle Degener at St. Martin Lutheran Church, Belle Plaine, Wis. Mr. Hartleben was employed at Phenix Manufacturing for 30 years, until being disabled. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church. Mr. Hartle-ben was a loving husband and father and enjoyed playing cards, gardening, fishing and hunting. He was a member of Amvets Post #10, Shawano and a lifetime member of D.A.V., Chapter 22. Survivors are his wife, Ann one daughter, Julie Ann, Shawano one sister, Shirley Dickson, Krakow, Wis., his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Norma and Kenneth Thompson, Cloverleaf Lakes Bernice and Creade Stueck, Shawano Ervin and Judie Degener, Belle Plaine and nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents one brother, Richard Dale and two sisters, Alice Mae and June Marie. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at 11 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano, with Pastor Michael Schram officiating. Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery with Military rites held be Amvets Post #10, D.A.V. Chapter #22 and the American Legion Post 117. Friends may call at the Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000 from 4 to 8 p.m. and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church until time of services. Hesse Arthur W. Hesse, 84, a retired Air Force colonel who became an electrical inspector for Prince George's County and Laurel, died Aug. 10 of leukemia at his home in Temple Hills. Col. Hesse, who was born in Belle Plaine, Wis., joined the Army Air Forces in 1941 after briefly attending the University of Wisconsin. During World War II, the military sent him to study meteorology at Reed College in Portland, Ore., and communications at Yale University. He transferred to the Air Force after that branch of the military was formed in 1947. He graduated from the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and taught mathematics there for several years. He received a master's degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University in the early 1950s. Col. Hesse helped design weapons for the Air Force, directed research in satellite communications and headed a program for developing electronic intelligence devices. He had been based in the Washington area since 1958 and retired from the Air Force in 1975. His decorations included the Legion of Merit. Col. Hesse joined the Prince George's County government as chief electrical inspector and worked there for 18 years. From 1993 until November 2006, he was the chief electrical inspector in Laurel, responsible for evaluating the electrical systems in homes and commercial and apartment buildings. He was a member of Oxon Hill Lutheran Church in Temple Hills for more than 40 years. He was a vice president and elder of the church, a member of the property committee, an usher and coffee host. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Charlotte Hesse of Temple Hills; a son, Scott Hesse of Springfield; a brother; and two grandsons. She enjoyed doing ceramics, crafts, bowling and playing cards with her family. Blanche was born Jan. 18, 1909, in Bear Creek, to the late Napoleon and Margaret (Flannegan) Thielke. When Blanche was nine months old, she and her family moved to Suring. At age 16, she graduated from Suring High School and went to Oconto Falls for teachers' training. She taught in the Suring area for five years in a one room school house with eight grades. On Dec. 29, 1931, Blanche married Melvin L. Broetzman at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Suring. The couple moved to Gillett in 1949. Mel preceded her in death May 3, 1995. Blanche was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Gillett, and the altar society. Blanche was well known throughout Gillett for her famous pie crusts and pies. She was also known for her sharp wit. Blanche is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Mary and Brian Ellis, Germantown; her daughter-in-law, Sally Broetzman, Menominee, Mich.; six grandchildren, Becky (Steven) Schmitt, Tom Broetzman, Karen (Andy) Valiquett, Megan (fiance Andy Renner) Broetzman, Mary Beth (Joe) Brown, Jennifer Ellis; four great- grandchildren, Jessica Spaulding, B.J. Spaulding, David Spaulding, Timothy Schmitt; two great-great- grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Russell was born on Nov. 5, 1973, son of Dick and Barb (Thiele) Vander Bloemen in Kaukauna. Russell was raised on the family farm on County Road D in Greenleaf, Wis. He spent his whole life there, straying to Appleton and Green Bay for a few short stays but always returning to his roots and his family. Russell had a great love of all animals but his cats Jonny and Dylan had a special place in his heart. Russell attended grade school in Kaukauna and graduated from Kaukauna High School, class of 1992. He went on to further his education at the University of Wisconsin, Fox Valley Campus in Menasha. While attending classes there, he decided to pursue his love of music and started his career, both full time and part time, as a radio disc jockey. Over the years he was employed by WOZZ, where he started his career, and WIXX where he was currently employed as a week-end DJ. Russell's love of music also saw him pursue a career as a DJ for weddings, anniversaries, proms, home comings and various school functions. He was currently employed at Elite Music Service. In the past he was also employed by CDJ and Fortune Talent. Russell is survived by his parents, Dick and Barb of Greenleaf, four brothers and a sister: Rick (Pam), Little Chute, Robert "Teddy," Kaukauna, Rayne (Kevin) Vosters, Nichols, Randy (Sue), Kaukauna, and Reed (Ann), Kaukauna; nieces and nephews: Candace, Eric, Spencer, Tyler, Haley, and Mathew; great nieces and nephews: Destiny, Carter, Derek Jr., and Anna. He is further survived by aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ray and Phyllis Vander Bloemen and Harold and La Vern Thiele. Funeral Services for Russell are at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2009 at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church, 804 Grignon St., Kaukauna with Pastors Karl Schultz and Mark Luetzow co-officiating. Isabel T. (Skinkis, Hylok) Brusky, 92, Flintville, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2009, surrounded by her family. Isabel was born Feb. 20, 1917, to the late Joseph and Pearl (Olszewski) Skinkis of Pulaski. She married Joseph Hylok in October of 1936. Together they raised 14 children, 11 of whom were stepchildren. Joseph preceded her in death in 1975, following 39 years of marriage. In January of 1976, she was united in marriage to Clem Brusky. They enjoyed several years of married life until Clem passed away in 1988. Isabel worked at the Suamico Box Co. and Our Best Canning Co., in addition to farming. She was known as the Flintville Baker to many people in the area. Isabel loved to make many different desserts. She enjoyed making big meals and those who dropped by always left with a full stomach. She enjoyed crocheting and listening to polka music. She loved to play cards and told her grandchildren many stories about growing up. Isabel was always willing to lend a helping hand and enjoyed making many friends. She had a big heart and strong faith. She was a member of the Altar Rosary Society of SS. Edward & Isidore Church, Flintville, and the VFW Auxiliary Post #9409, Suamico. Her family includes three children, 21 grandchildren, and many great- and great-great-grandchildren, Regina (Tony) Berna, Sr., Pulaski; Donna, Joan, Audrey, Tony Jr., Judy, Ken and Lisa; Joe (Von) Hylok, Omaha, Neb.; Joe Jr., Dan, Brian, Tracey, Eric, Mary, Fran, Theresa and Kent; Dorothy (Tony) Prokop, Pulaski; Jodi (deceased), Bob, Kelly, Chantel and Greg; one brother and sister-in-law, Stanley (Rosemary) Skinkis, Black Creek; four sisters, Hattie Jarmolowicz, Sobieski; Florence Holewinski, Green Bay; Helen Koblewski, Milwaukee; and Genevieve "Judy" Spaude, Menominee, Mich.; her stepchildren and their families; other relatives and friends. He was born April 28, 1920, in Stiles Junction, Wisconsin, son of the late Ira and Sarah (Dessel) Spice. On May 28, 1942, he was united in marriage to the former Erna J. VanDenElsen at Wrightstown. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in European theater of operations and was a member of the Shawano American Legion Post 117. Mr. Spice had formerly worked in construction and as a log truck driver. He was an avid musician who played guitar with the Happy Wanderers Band, playing Country-Western and Old Time music in the Shawano area and in Texas during the winter months. Throughout his life he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Keith was employed for the Nordberg Co. in Clintonville for over 20 years. He was a member of the Christus Lutheran Church, Clintonville, where he had served on the Church Council and as an usher. GILBERT O. HALVERSON, 80 Rev. Gilbert O. Halverson, 80, of Elmhurst died Monday, Dec. 10, in his residence at Lexington Square in Elmhurst. Rev. Halverson was pastor of Park View Lutheran Church on Chicago's Northwest Side from 1955 to 1973. He also served Lutheran parishes in Navarino, Eau Claire and Oshkosh, Wis. Upon his retirement in 1984, Rev. Halverson returned to Stevens Point, Wis., where he served as visitation pastor at his home congregation. He relocated to Elmhurst in 2000. Rev. Halverson graduated from Central State Teachers College, now the University of Wisconsin in Stevens Point, in 1942 and Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., in 1945. During his residency in Stevens Point, he served on the City Council and as interim mayor from June 1984 to April 1985 and was involved in several civic organizations. During his active ministry, Rev. Halverson held many conference and district leadership roles in the former Evangelical Lutheran Church and the American Lutheran Church. In r! etirement, he served as interim pastor at a number of parishes in central Wisconsin. Rev. Halverson is survived by his wife, Esther Amundson, whom he married in 1947; a daughter, Lousanne Lofgren; two sons, Gilbert M. and Jacques; and six grandsons. Wilma Smith, OP SPRINGFIELD - Sister M. Wilma Smith, OP, 76, of Sacred Heart Convent died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in Springfield. She was born Jan. 21, 1927, in Langdon, N.D., the daughter of Sylvester and Edna Merriam Smith. Sister M. Wilma entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters in 1949 and professed her vows in 1950. For eight years she taught at Catholic elementary parish schools, serving Cathedral in Springfield from 1951-54, Sacred Heart in Redlands, Calif., and Holy Rosary in Denver. From 1958-62 she taught speech, English and drama at Sacred Heart Academy in Springfield. She then taught at Marian High School in Chicago Heights from 1962-78. She earned a master's degree in speech pathology and was a speech pathologist in the Chicago Heights area at Marian High School and Happy Work Center (Steger), and in the Springfield area at Brother James Court, Sacred Heart Academy, St. Agnes, Little Flower, Christ the King and Cathedral. She became a licensed practical nurse in 1984. She worked at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, Miss., and then at the Motherhouse. She was a staff member at Villa Vianney in Sherman for four years. Since 1994 she was involved in pastoral care in Navarino, Wis., the Motherhouse and Jubilee Farm in New Berlin. Survivors: several cousins.
