A 7-year- old rural Birnamwood boy died Thursday as a result of a collision between the all-terrain vehicle he was operating and a truck driven by his father. John P. Carlson, who was to turn 8 on Tuesday 10/6, drove an all-terrain vehicle out of the family's driveway about 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to an investigation by the Shawano County Sheriff's Department. At the same time, his father, John C. Carlson, approached the driveway from the north on Trout Lane, just south of Highway N. A Birnamwood ambulance transported the son to Langlade Memorial Hospital in Antigo. From there he was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. St. Joseph's notified county officials just after 1 a.m. that the boy had died of multiple injuries. The Sheriff's Department has ruled the death an accident. Services for the boy are scheduled for noon Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Birnamwood. Visitation at the church begins one hour before the service.
