The Rev. John Smith has officiated there since 2004. "It's a nice congregation," Smith said. The church was established by the Rev. Frederick Ruhland, who came to the area from Oshkosh. Ruhland was instrumental in starting 26 churches, all of which are still open. "He wanted to make sure everybody could walk to church," Smith said. On Oct. 23, 1859, the first constitution for St. Martin was drafted. Services were held in a private home. In 1868 a legal title was obtained for the property of the present church building. The little log cabin church remained until 1869 when the first church was finished. It stood until 1907 when the present structure was built. In 1991 a new addition was constructed on the front of the church. It included a lift to make it handicap accessible, a larger narthex, bathroom, meeting rooms and storage. People have brought in pictures from 100 years ago, which will be on display along with pictures from throughout the years. Smith was previously the minister there from 1983 to 1993. He and his wife Sandy are happy to be back at St. Martin. "It's just like we hadn't left," John said. Sandy is the choir director, Sunday school teacher, secretary and does the decorating. The parsonage is just down the road from the church. "We love it out in the country," Sandy said. Pastor Smith keeps busy visiting the sick and shut-ins and takes his turn at preaching at Pine Manor. He said the church is doing fine financially. "That's a blessing," he said. The couple enjoys the just less than 200 members they serve. "They're very friendly and faithful," Sandy said. "They want to stay close to the true word of God and teachings of the Bible." Last summer air conditioning and a new furnace were added. Smith, 67, said he hopes to keep on at St. Martin as long as his health holds up. "It's just the right size for one person." The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Dinner, for which reservations have closed, will be served in two shifts. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He was born October 18, 1940, in Laona; son of Anton Albert and Mary Sophie Wall. He was a graduate of the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Tony married Betty J. Noffke, August 12, 1961, at St. John's Cathedral, Milwaukee. He was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Neenah. Tony was employed at IBM as a customer service engineer for 30 years until his retirement in 1996 and his outstanding work was recognized by earning two IBM Means Service Awards. Tony was extremely proud of serving our country in the U.S. Air Force for four years where one of his fondest memories was serving in Labrador where he was a radar specialist. Tony devoted a lot of time to his family and enjoyed sharing many hobbies with them. At home he rocked many grandchildren through books, meals and illnesses in his favorite kitchen chair. He often entertained the grandkids in the basement and enlisted them to help him with his woodworking crafts. At "the farm" Tony took his children and grandchildren on many tractor rides, taught them to fly-fish and shared his love of nature's beauty. He taught two daughters the art of deer hunting and shared his hunting shack with many grandchildren (who had to wake him up from time to time). Throughout the years Tony and Betty took many family vacations to all four corners of the U.S. and Canada where they tented or RV'd to camp, fish, sightsee and relax. A frequent destination was the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming where the family and friends vacationed for over 20 years. Tony and Betty's night-out often centered around bowling. This love of bowling led to Tony's involvement in local, state and national bowling associations for over 30 years where he held various offices at the local and state level. He was inducted into the Neenah-Menasha Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 2002. He served as a director of the Wisconsin State Bowling Association for 20 years and went on to become President of the WSBA. Tony traveled across the U.S. to participate in the American Bowling Congress national tournament for 24 years. He also enjoyed golfing, especially with Betty. Tony was grateful for the many friends he's made and memories he has shared. He will be missed by many. Tony was loved by his wife, Betty, his four children and ten grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Betty; four children: Tony Jr. (Amy) Piantek, Shawano ; Rita (John) Birr, Appleton; Barb (Craig) Jascor, Plover; Carolyn (Todd) Horneck, Greenville; ten grandchildren: Emily, Hannah, Adam and Nicole Piantek; Alea, Heidi and Olivia Jascor; Jack, Abby and Johnny Horneck; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Susan Noffke, Underhill; Evelyn (Leonard) Rambo, Antigo; brother-in-law, Leonard (Lucille) Noffke, Mequon.
