The following table is information that I extracted from ship's passenger lists from Rotterdam to Philadelphia from 1727 to about the early 1760's. There is another list names listed as Weis, but when the German church records were checked the original spelling was Weiss. I will include these in the next email. Hopefully this may be helpful to someone. These particular people were almost all protestant. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the following personally. It was sent to me back in 1998 by someone. I found it interesting enough to keep it for later reference. Enjoy. ****************************************************************** The WEISS' immigrated from Germany to Canada and eventually New York State and other Northeast states. They were Jewish. Some Anglicized their name, changing it to WISE, to avoid anti-semitism. When researching the WISE branch of the WEISS', you will frequently come across Old Testament names like Abraham, Isaac, Joel, Samuel, and David. This is a good indication you are in the WEISS family line. The WEIS family( later changed to WEIS, WIES, and WISE were German Catholics who immigrated to Pennsylvania. As far as I can tell, the WEISE's and WEISS' did not intermarry. This branch later migrated westward to Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, and the west. The WISE family were English Protestants and immigrated in the 1600's to Virginia, near Jamestown. A descendant, Henry Alexander WISE, was governor of Virginia and a general in The Confederacy. Descendants are almost entirely in the South, predominantly Virginia ( Wise VA, located in Wise County, was named after Henry WISE ), West Virginia ( where WISE is a very common name ), South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, and Texas ( where WISE is also a common name ). Wise is a fairly common name in England. So you have three distinct family lines with three different religions. Usually the religious affiliation will clarify which line one is researching , since there was less inter-faith marriage before the mid twentieth century. -- Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above.
