I found my own ancestor on this list (Johan George Weis actually it was Georg--I misspelled it on the list). The church records in Germany spelled it Weiss. That's also the way it was spelled in America for the first three generations. Then my ggg grandfather, Philip Weiss changed it to Wise. About half of the extended family kept the Weiss spelling.
