I'm not one hundred percent sure, but I am strongly suspicious that it traces back to a Henry Wise who was hanged along with four others for a crime in Lebanon, Pennsylvania in 1880. The "Blue Eyed Six" case was publicized world wide and it would have been a major scandal to have been related to him.
