The Adam Wise book describes the history and genealogy of a branch of the Wise/Weiss family that came from Germany and settled in Pennsylvania. I belong to another line of (presumably) English Wises, who settled first in St. Mary's County, MD. There are some striking similarities, albeit no exact matches, between my line and your ancestors. One of my direct ancestors, George Wise, was born May 15, 1773 in Maryland, and married Jane King (baptized 29 Jan 1772 in St. Andrews Parish in Saint Mary's, MD. They had several children born in Maryland and then moved to Monongalia County in what is now West Virginia (and includes Morgantown). George's son John had a son listed shown in my records as Isaac C. Wise, born about 1838. This Isaac and his wife Hannah had a son George L. Wise, born about 1855 in Marion or Monongalia County WV. The fact that middle initials are used suggests that there were other Isaacs and Georges in the same area at the same time, possibly your relatives. I'll see whether I can find out if the original George who came to Monongalia County from Maryland was accompanied by brothers or cousins who may have been ancestors of your Isaac Wise. Given the name similarities, I think it is possible that the two families are related. For I have WISE'S married to WIRT / WEST, wouldn't it be astounding if this Wirt Co. was named by my WIRT's ? I have a Joseph Wise who moved from Lancaster Co. Pa. to Troy, Ohio, Miami Co.He was born 7 March 1806. He was a distiller and his son Hugh Frazier Wise helped to start Hayner Distillery . William is listed with his family in the 1850 census of East Bethlehem, Washington Co., PA, with occupation as a miller and worked for John Corbett. William's oldest son, Henderson, who married Roseann McDermott, also was a miller and distiller and worked for the Ulerys in Zollarsville. The Ulery mill was built in 1835 and demolished in 2001. Henderson named a son James Ulery Wise and I have a copy of a journal James wrote regarding some of the Wise family, but it dosen't go any further than his grandfather. Milling and distilling seems to have been the family trades of the PA Wises, passed down through Adam Wise, the original Wise immigrant who began a milling and distilling business in Maryland before moving to Pennsylvania. William is undoubetdly a descendant of Adam's, but I haven't been able to make the connection. I've ! once seen William listed as a son of Jacob Wise (son of Frederick Wise) and Martha Freeman, but have no verification and I don't know where that information came from. Do you have any record of Jacob's children? Or know of another possible connection of William to Adam Wise?
