    3. Funny how you hear all these tales about your family but ca't really prove them. But I do know my granddad was a bootlegger and had his own still in Linville Gorge. He was also involed, do't know how much in the lynching of a fellow from the railroad trestle. There are also rumors about Indian blood in our system but I haven't been able to prove it. I do know that the larget Indian settlement in North Carolina was supposed to be in Burke County. There was also a spanish fort nearby because they have done digging into it. There was also the Melungeon factor in north western North Carolina also that was there in the 1500's before the English came to the shores of America. I haven't found Benjamin Wise from Mecklenburg County, NC. Was he an orhan, an illigetimate child or did he just drop out of the skies? Same and Henry Thomas who was born in Surry County, NC. But beware how far back you go for in ten generations, there are 1024 grandparents starting back with you as #1. In 20 generations, there are only 1048578 grandparents. And if you get the DNA test, you might end up alike myself from the Iberia penisula to Central Asia to the Eurasian Adam group in east central Africa. Oh, my cousins now don't want to know because as they say, there might be a horse thief in the bunch. Oh well.     3. I think in the past week you all have set a record for the number of e-mails through the list. It's at least a record for a month and probably for a year. I've seen more sharing, helping, and offering to help than I have since I've been a member of the list. This is great stuff happening. With the increase in traffic we have only lost one subscriber. It's their loss not ours. I've never understood why someone would sign up for a list and then quit when they get mail from it. Maybe they think they know everything WISE and don't need us any more.     3. The Adam Wise book describes the history and genealogy of a branch of the Wise/Weiss family that came from Germany and settled in Pennsylvania. I belong to another line of (presumably) English Wises, who settled first in St. Mary's County, MD. There are some striking similarities, albeit no exact matches, between my line and your ancestors. One of my direct ancestors, George Wise, was born May 15, 1773 in Maryland, and married Jane King (baptized 29 Jan 1772 in St. Andrews Parish in Saint Mary's, MD. They had several children born in Maryland and then moved to Monongalia County in what is now West Virginia (and includes Morgantown). George's son John had a son listed shown in my records as Isaac C. Wise, born about 1838. This Isaac and his wife Hannah had a son George L. Wise, born about 1855 in Marion or Monongalia County WV. The fact that middle initials are used suggests that there were other Isaacs and Georges in the same area at the same time, possibly your relatives. I'll see whether I can find out if the original George who came to Monongalia County from Maryland was accompanied by brothers or cousins who may have been ancestors of your Isaac Wise. Given the name similarities, I think it is possible that the two families are related. During the mid 1850's Isaac moved to Jackson Co, WV and is found in the 1860 Census of Bellville Dist. In 1879 he is purchasing property in Wirt Co, WV. Isaac remained in Wirt Co. until after the death of his wife in 1887. He moved into the home of his daughter, Nancy Wise Blake, in Meigs Co., Ohio.     3. Anna Maria Margaretha Schmidt (later known as Mary Smith) was married to Philip Weiss (Wise). The Schmidts came to America on the Hope in 1733. They came from the community of Ittlingen, which is only about ten miles or so north of Eppingen, where the Huths originated. Anna Maria was the granddaughter of Henrich Schmidt and Anna Margaret Keimen. Their son, Johann Heinrich Schmidt, was born in 1726, while the family was still in Germany. He is the father of Anna Maria. They were neighbors of the Huths in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania and they may have lived close enough to each other in Germany to have also known each other there. Like the Huths, they were also members of the German Reformed congregation, New Goshenhoppen. Anna Maria's sister, Elizabeth, married Philip Wise's brother, Jacob, and her brother, Jacob, married Philip's sister, Elisabetha. So all told, three siblings from one family married three siblings from the other. Weiss (Wise): The surname was originally Weiss. It was Anglicized by Philip Wise in the third generation in America. The earliest record of this family is found in the German Reformed Church records of Lustadt (Oberlustadt), Germany. Lustadt is in the Palatinate about twenty miles southwest of Mannheim, and is possibly one of the towns that the Elector in Mannheim saw burning during the French invasion of 1685. The church records only go back to 1708 here and so they might have been destroyed during the French invasion of 1707. The records between 1708 and 1720 are badly damaged and are mostly unreadable. Johann Georg and Anna Catharina Weiss had six children baptized there between 1721 and 1736. They immigrated in 1738. Very likely the family was separated for the voyage across the Atlantic. Georg is recorded on the passenger list of the Davy. The Davy lost a total of 160 passengers and crew due to disease during the voyage. His oldest son, Christopher, is listed on the passenger list of the Friendship, which arrived in Philadelphia about one month before the Davy. Christopher was the only one old enough to be on the passenger list. (Only those males over age sixteen were listed). The Davy did not carry any children. 1738 was a devastating year for the immigrants. An epidemic had been started in the holding camp outside Rotterdam, where the immigrants were waiting their turn to get on the ships and there was an increased mortality in the camps and on the ships that departed for America all during that year. There are records in America for four of the Weiss children, Christopher, Erhard, Carl and Elizabeth. Two children who show up on the German records, Maria Magdalena and Catharina are not found and they are presumed to have died. There is a possibility of at least one additional son. There is family lore that I received from two totally different sources of a son, George, who was born at sea. There have been probate records found for Johann Georg Weiss for the year 1743. His son, our ancestor Erhard, married Susanna Huth probably about 1747, and the baptisms of their children are found in the New Goshenhoppen Reformed Church records in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The birth of their son Philip Weiss (Wise) in 1748 is recorded in those church records. Philip married Anna Maria Margareta Schmidt (Mary Smith) in 1776.     3. My grandfather, Isaac E.(Edmond) WISE , b. 23 July 1862, Claiborne Par., La, was son of Daniel WISE. I have conflicting information on Daniel WISE. I have been told Daniel was born 16 Feb 1818. He d. 6 Dec. 1865.when his son was age 3. Then Isaac's mother died when he was age 4. Isaac E. lived in Winn Parish, LA Daniel Wise came to Louisiana in? His name is on a list "The Old Home Guard" which was commanded by Duke D.H.Hays, of Arcadia Parish, Louisiana, now of Red River Parish. Daniel WISE was released as POW at Vicksburg, MS 4 July 1863. He md. Martha Ann WILDER, b. 31 Dec 1843;d. 6 Mar 1866, Claiborne Parish, LA She was dau. of Edmond W. WILDER and Elizabeth LINDER. Daniel's Death Certificate shows he was born in New York, but this information was furnished by the wife of Isaac. Another source says Daniel was born in PA. I have never located Daniel WISE on any census in Louisiana. I believe there is a connection with an Isaac Alden who is shown on the 1850 Census for Bienville Par., LA. Isaac Alden signed as witness on Daniel WISE and Martha Ann WILDER Marriage Certificate. Also Daniel named his son Isaac. I hope Daniel's date of birth will help with someones missing Daniel WISE.     3. Hi Billie My WISE ancestors originated in Kent County England;the earliest ancestors identified in the early 1730s. Six ancestors immigrated to Canada between 1834 and 1872 ( WISE, LOFFT, REDPATH & MIDDLETON). I cannot identify earlier immigrants. Most of the Canadian WISE are still in Ontario but some immigrated to Michigan (two) and Ohio (two - WISE & MCCULLAGH) and Manitoba (one - PLUMMER).     3. My wises come from Samuel Wise born 1840 in Pan (possibly son of Samuel wise born 1817 in PA and wife Sarah Ann unk). Samuel got married in MO to Eliza Ann HARTZLER. Children were Ida Virginia Wise, William Henry, John Charles "Charlie", Arthur and Earl. They were born in MO or Iowa. Samuel and Eliza Ann died in Hillside or Hillsdale cemetery in OK. Did they move with one of the children there? Ida Virginia Wise married Charles William HOLMES in Scotland Co, MO in 1894. Children Leona, Mary Mae, and Maurice were born in MO, but then the family moved to Louisiana (paternal Aunt lived there) and Cleo and Lula Vista HOLMES were born in Jennings LA. The family moved to Enid Oklahoma in 1905 and then Texas for awhile and the kids attended school with one of Ida's brothers' kids. Then the HOLMES moved to Los Angeles where Ida Virginia WISE and Charles William Holmes died. They had followed their younger son Cleo Holmes to Los Angeles. I know I've talked to somebody about the Wise brothers to Ida Virginia, but can't remember where or when. Since some of the geography looked similar to recent postings I thought I'd post. Anybody recognize these families? I'd love to know more about Samuel's ancestory. Trudy in CO
