Am new to this internet stuff. Am seeking information on the Wises of Rockingham County, VA. My 4th great grandfather was John Wise born in either 1761 or 1765, buried on "Wiseland" in Rockingham County. Have not been able to find out who his parents or siblings were. Potentially, originated in Accomack County, VA. As everyone at this internet address is probably in some way related to a Wise and as we all know as a Wise........we are WISE (I think), therefore, I have every confidence that somebody out there can solve my dilemma. If this family can't solve this riddle for me, I'm thinking of changing my name to Smith. Help needed in Maryland. Larry M. Wise (or Smith)

Believe John Adam was born in Hagerstown, MD but went to Dauphin Co., PA. ***************** Roger: did your family keep the Weiss spelling? I descend from Johannes Adam Weiss who was in Maryland, then Washington Co. Pa. a generation earlier than yours, but he Americanized his name to Adam Wise. I have quite a lot of information on him if you'd like me to check this possible lead for you. I'm new to this list, and don't know if this has come up before, but I thought I'd mention that a new book on this Wise family will be coming out soon. The compiler is asking that people who want to buy a copy let her know, though she's not accepting money now. She is Kathryn Swim Cummings, P.O. Box 681798, Park City UT 84068. She is the genealogist who discovered the early 17th century church records in Germany that take this line back another generation or two. The book will cover all the descendants of Adam Wise. Friends of the Wise (and variations of Wise) surname, Is anyone familiar with a Wiss Scissors Company at (or near) Bristol, CT in the mid- to late 1800s? My sketchy family information indicates that there may also have been some relationship between this company and the better known Sessions Clock Co., also at (or near) Bristol, CT. I'm trying to establish the relationship of Wiss Scissors Company to a James Clayton and his wife Amelia Reynolds Clayton, both of whom died at Bristol, CT. Thanks. RJ Squires
