    1. John and Hannah WISE of Rockingham County, Va. circa 1761
    2. Kwisesr
    3. In response to the request for more postings to the list, I thought I would add my 2 cents worth. My fifth great grandfather was born approximately 1761 in Keezletown Va. near Harrisonburg in Rockingham County. His wife's name was Hannah. I would like very much to know her maiden name, the names of both of their parents, and if possible info further back. I know that's a tall order, but I might as well shoot for the moon while I am at it. Thanks in advance to anyone who might be of help. I have info from this period forward which I would be glad to share.

I am way behind on my email reading. By my count, there are 103 of us at this time. We are steadily climbing in numbers. We've probably gained 20 since Christmas. This surname list is 15 weeks old. So far it has been a fairly quiet list. I wish a few more of you would post a query to the list. That is the only way we are going to make connections. I am hoping when you answer a query, unless you are sure it is only going to be of interest to one person, that you will send a copy of your response to the list. 3. Am seeking information on the parents of John C. (possibly Calhoun) Wise, born May 4, 1828 in Tennessee. I believe his father was James Wise, a carpenter from South Carolina born about 1789, and mother Mary (surname unknown) born about 1800 in Tennessee. Possible siblings: Eliza, born about 1821; Henry, William, both older than Eliza; and another sister Manervy (spelling is questionable). This family was located in McNairy County, Tennessee in 1840 & 1850. Also living with the family on the 1850 census was Stanton Brown, age 4. No relationship is indicated, but he could have been a grandson. I believe that shortly after 1850, John left his family and McNairy County with a wagon train bound for Austin, Texas. The 1860 census indicated that James Wise was widowed and that he lived with daughter Manervy and her husband James Reed. No other information was found after this date. If you have any information on anyone related to this Wise family, I would appreciate hearing from you. Susan Hensley rhensley@swbell.net

    3. Hi all, Wow, what a response! Yes, I did find this biography online, and on the GenWeb. If some of you do not have internet access, let me know and I will forward the biography to you. Here is the URL where I found this biography, I hope it is a lot of help to all of you. http://www.chartiers.com I believe this will take you to the main page, and if I recall, there is a search engine as well as a link to surnames if you prefer that route. This bio is from the book: Commemorative Biographical Record of Washington County, Pennsylvania (Chicago: J.H. Beers &Co., 1893). I strongly suggest that even if you have no hint that your particular WISE family was ever in PA, you should still read this, it is very informative and also has information on where some of the descendants went from PA that did leave there. If anyone has a problem finding this bio, please let me know and I will go back and bookmark the exact location and post it. Happy hunting and best of luck! Lynn

    3. Hello Lynn, I think it would be alright to post the biography parts as long as you give credit to the author(s) (publisher). There are probably many of us on this list who would like to see it. It would be nice if you could post the URL. 3. Hello, I found online a very nice biography about the WISE family, it is somewhat lengthy, and it surely appears as though nearly every WISE in America descends from this same family. It, of course, has missing generations, but explains about the first WISE that came here to NJ and went to PA and some of his descendants and where they went to. I found it quite informative. If everyone would be interested and can tell me if this would be ok to do (because of copyrights?), I can post this biography to the list here in parts. I think that as long as I include the publisher info., this would be "legal" to post? Let me know, as I do believe it would be of great help to a few of you out there. Lynn

    3. Now that I know I am not alone (thanks for your replies). This is the family I am trying to learn more about. I am not sure if they are related to my Connett family or not and am trying to find out more about them to see if they might be. Anyone who can tell me more about thsi family, I would love to hear from you! I do have a little more to share if anyone else is interested in this family. 1860 US Census - Grant County, IN - Jefferson Twp. - PO Jaden 556/223 Daniel Wise 54 M farmer 5000/200 Penn Nathenne " 51 F Penn Henry " 25 M Penn Samuel " 22 M Penn Mahala COMET 12 F Ind. The above girl is actually Mahala Connett. She is the daughter of Joseph Connett who was born ca. 1806 in KY (probably Mason County area) and he married in 1826 in Fayette County, OH to a Mary Witty. Not sure if this Mary Witty is mother of Mahala or not. Mahala Connett showed up in 1850 here: 1850 US Census - Kosciusko County IN - Prairie Twp 63/63 Sarah Connett 45 F Ohio Angeline " 13 F Ohio Joseph " 11 M Ind. Fauley " 7 M Ind. Nicholas " 5 M Ind. Mahala " 2 F Ind. The story is that Mahala Connetts father (Joseph) worked for the Assistand DA office (in Grant or Kosciusko County?). Her mother took her to live with Sarah Wise ( as Mahalas grand-daughter tells this). Mahalas mother said she would no longer live with her father, and she never returned to get Mahala. Evidently Mahalas mother fell in love with and ran off with Joseph Connett's partner (don't know his name). I have not found any of the Connett children on any other census since this one, don't know what became of any of them aside from Mahala. I am trying to figure out who this Sarah Connett was in the 1850 census - was she Mary Witty Connett - or another wife of Joseph Connett? Was this Sarah related to the WISE family in some way? Is this Sarah the mother of Mahala Connett? What happened to this Sarah? I know there was a Connett connection elsewhere in this family further down the line but am not sure if it relates to this at all or even to the same Connett family. If anyone has more information on this particular WISE family, I would love to know more. I also have other bits and pieces of this family to share. Thanks and sorry for such a long post, Lynn tscudder@essex1.com
