Looking for any info on Charles Avery Wise b Ohio. He married Virginia Maude Mines and had a son named Lester William Wise b 1902 Cabell Co. W.V.Charles had at least 4 children.
The Nimrod Wise Bible list was sent to me 10 years ago by a correspondent from New Mexico, with roots in Crowder, OK, and Carrol Co. AR. She had no location for Nimrod Wise at the time. To what states did this Frederick Wise, William Wise, or Nimrod Wise migrate? Do I understand correctly that Frederick Wise was the husband of Mary Ann Baker? William Wise m ?? Nimrod Wise m ?? Jacob Wise m ?? Where did Mary Ann Baker Wise Taylor live with her new husband & children? My Wises were from SC as I mentioned in my first posting yesterday. There are some in teh 30's and 40's who joined DAR on their connection to the Col. John Wise of Accomac Co. VA--but now researchers think that is not a true connection. Some speculate it is--but James Wise refused to marry a "cousin" chosen as bride for him and was disinherited and migrated to SC. Some story, huh? Ann Harper Bonner in north LA where lots of WISEs settled in first third of 1800's.
I'm sorry. My fingers worked faster than my brain. Nimrod Wise is the son of William and Mary Ann Wise, not Frederick and Mary Ann Wise. Frederick is the grandfather of Nimrod. Mary Louise
Someone must have posted the Nimrod Wise Bible records before I got on the mailing list for I have never seen it. However, I can identify. Nimrod is the son of Frederick Wise and Mary Ann Baker of Hardy Co., WVA and a brother to my Mary Ann Wise. There was also a brother Jacob but I loose him after 1850. Mary Ann married a second time to a Taylor and there are a number of Taylor half siblings. Mary Louise
Any help on connecting this Nimrod Wise? Someone long ago sent these Bible records: Nimrod Wise b 1819 Mary Jane b 1832 Noah [?] Thompson Wise b 1842 Amy or Avery Ann Wise b 1855 Francis b 1857 __ijah b 22 Jan [no yr] Levi Wise b 1861 Jefferson D. b 1862 John W. b 1864 Ann Harper Bonner James Wise [b1781 SC>MS>Claiborne Par. Looking for any information on William Baxter Wise. He married Emma Barbara Reed. They were married in either South Carolina or Georgia. One child that I know of was Helen Iler Wise. I believe she was born in SC between 1904-1910. Thanks in advance
Hello Cousins... I'm looking for information on the WEESE's who were in Clinton and Gentry Counties in MO starting about 1840 or so. In 1840, there are 5 WEESE families... Landen, who was between 40 and 50; William Sr., who was between 50 and 60; George Sr., who was between 40 and 50; William, who was between 20 and 30; and George, who was between 20 and 30. Presumably, William Jr was the son of William Sr, and George Jr was the son of George Sr (I know this in not 100% sure, but it's a starting point). The questions I have are these: 1. Were Landen, George Sr. and William Sr. brothers? 2. Since I find George Sr. and William Sr. both in Gentry County in 1850 (Gentry formed from Clinton in 1841) but no sign of Landen anywhere, did Landen die in the 1840-1850 period? 3. If he did, does anyone know who his descendants are, where he is buried etc? Any help appreciated. I believe the family came to Missouri from Virginia via Tennessee during the 1830-1840 period. There are no WEESE's with these first names in 1830 in MO or TN, but many of the children born in that time period show place of birth as TN in the 1850 census. Both George Sr and William Sr give POB to be VA in 1850, ergo they left VA around 1830 and arrived in MO by 1840, via TN. Thanks in advance. Kelly Nix Norman, OK
NOTES FROM GABRIELLA HARRIET WISE GROAT, FOR A LETTER TO NELL DOWNING NORTON, 1944. Transcribed by her granddaughter, Mary Gabrielle Lyon Keck, 1998. Grandfather Thomas J. Wise born somewhere in (Va. scratched out) Mayslick, Ky. came to Mo. with his two sisters and bro. Abagal + Persilla and baby brother John S. Married twice--and the second time to Gabriella H. Pogue at that time. He had 2 children Mary Jane + William. Grandfather came to Mo. at an early age. After his mother died, his father was married again. His two sisters, not liking the thought of a step mother, brought the two young brothers West. I knew Aunt Abby quite well. As a child, I remember her son John Wimer, his wife and small children. I believe Sally was the name of his oldest girl, and I think his wife was named Jennie. I was too young to remember much about them. I believe if we advertize through the bur of missing persons, we could find some trace of John Wimers family. I have heard my father say that the Gov. of Virginia, Henry A. (Wise) was a close relative, but dont remember if he was a cousin or what. I wish I knew more about Grandfathers people, and hope you find out all about them and I surtenly want a copy of the record. I am Fathers (Charles W. Wise) oldest child. He had 11 children, one step son. I met a cousin of my father at Marion, Kans. in 1884. Her name was Lizzy Dobins Goldsmith. She + her husband was visiting Fanny Patten Costello. I have heard the name Burges mentioned a lot, but never got the connection--but they were connected to Father some way. I wish I had asked more questions. My fathers children were named Gabrielle Harriett, Minnie Isibell, Thomas (?--struck over, unsure if it is Thomas--MK) Douglas, Margret May, William Wimer, Mary Adalade, Jesse Golden, Felicia Ellen, Lola Lara, Josephine and John Bonnie. Transcribers note: This appears to be a draft my grandmother wrote out to write a letter in response to one she evidently received earlier from Nell Downing Norton. I have the letter Nell wrote in response to this information--it was posted to the WISE mailing list in 4 parts on 10 Jan 1998. I have transcribed it exactly as my grandmother wrote it, including the apparent misspellings of several of the names.
This and the three more parts to follow are transcriptions of correspondence received my my grandmother, Gabriella Harriet WISE GROAT 53 years ago. I have transcribed it mostly just as written, with only minor spelling and punctuation changes. This is the majority of my WISE information. I have had no luck at all in tracing this line beyond what is in this letter and its enclosures. Cover letter: New London, Mo. May 11th 1944 Dear Cousin Gabriella-- Just think, you are my Mother's 1st cousin and we have never seen you. One time, when I was a baby, Grandma Hays (Mary Jane Wise Hays) and Mamma went to Kansas to visit the relations, and she recalls quite a bit about that visit. I am so glad to get in touch with you, and so is she. I feel like you may be able to tell me a great deal that I want to know. I am sending you a very brief outline of the line, and in it you will see what I wish to know. But first, your letter. Thomas J. Wise (Sr.) was born in Mason Co., Ky--not in Virginia. Grandma Hays has that written in her Bible in her own handwriting. His father, John Wise married Mary Shotwell, his mother, in Mason Co. Ky. Jan. 20, 1799 & he (Thos) was born Jan. 19, 1806. See pages 1 & 5 of notes. But--I am sure the Wise family came from Virginia and no doubt John Wise was born there. The late Henry A. Wise, Gov. of Va., is descended from the Wises of Virginia, and I am glad to hear you say your father told you that he was a near relative. That will give us something to work on. John Wise came to Va. in 1635--he is the immigrant ancestor of Henry A. Wise--whose line goes down this way: John (1), John (2), John (3), John (4) m. Margaret Douglas, and had Major John (5) Wise, married twice and his 5th child by his 2nd m. was Henry A. Wise born 1806--the same year our Thos. J. Wise was born. Major John (5) Wise by his 1st wife had only one son to leave issue, John James Wise b. 1794--then Henry A. by his 2nd wife and a John Cropper Wise. The marriage bond of John Wise has his father as Adam Wise. If we can find who John Wise's mother was it would help. I can't even tell by the names of their children. John Wise had a sister Catherine (or Elizabeth), b. in Virginia, but descendants don't know where. I have wondered about a probable 2nd marriage for John Wise, father of T. J. Sr. You say he was about to marry again and the 4 children--Abigail, Priscilla, T. J. and John S. came to Mo. In 1828 Eliza Wise Wheeler, Ann Wise Dobyns, Mrs. J. Wise, Abigail Wise, Wm. Wise and Priscilla Wise were living in St. Louis Co., Mo., Eliza and Ann having married in Mason Co., Ky. and at this time, Lydia Wise Burgess and John Wise Jr. (John S. Wise b. 1823) were still in Mason Co., Ky. You see at this date 1828, Thos. J. was only 22 yrs. old and John S. only 5. Priscilla evidently went back to Kentucky, for she married Ransom Jones there in 1834, Sep. 5. They must have come to St. Louis County with their older sisters--Eliza Wise Wheeler and Ann Wise Dobyns. I am enclosing a page on children of Aunt Abbie Wise Wimer--will you check it, add what you know and return it to me. Was this Lizzie Dobbins Goldsmith the dau. of Ann Wise Dobyns (Dobbins)--and your father's 1st cousin? Do you know the address of any of these kin to whom I may write for information. I am sending you pages one - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 & 6 and an Xtra p. 6 which I wish you to return, answering all the questions you can about Thos. J. Wise family. Can you tell me what the initials are in the various middle names--Abbie A. Wise, Gabie S. Wise, John S. Wise, etc. I have (family notes) that Chas. W. Wise was born Dec. 10, 1840 in Macon Co., Mo. Is this right? I wish you would check all my notes and then comment and add what you can. Check page 5 and let me know if you know any more than this. Check page 6 also. I was in Denver in 1915--Aunt Annie, my mother's sister, and I. If I had known you were there, we would have looked you up. You must have been born in Mo.--where? Am sorry I have been so long answering your nice letter. Mamma sends her love to her unknown cousin. Cordially, Nell Downing Norton 5/17/44 (Continued in Part 2)
