    1. Cookbook Project Announcement
    2. Shirley
    3. I am forwarding this message to you from the people in charge of the Rootsweb Cookbook project. Commercial messages are not allowed on these genealogy lists but an exception is being made for this project since its sole function is to support Rootsweb which sorely needs our support and without which our list probably would not exist. ..................................................... Due to overwhelming popularity of the cookbook project undertaken recently by the Homespun mailing list -- and in response to scores of requests -- Homespun and the Country-Kitchen are pleased and excited to announce we are now compiling a second volume. It will have all new recipes and differs from the first in that holiday traditions will be included, which may be short essays up to 150 words and applies to any holiday celebrated around the world. Each item will include the submitter's name, city and state of residence. As with our first project, all proceeds will be used to support Rootsweb. Our first edition netted over $4,000 for them. Our goal for the second volume is to reach at least $5,000. With your support, we can achieve this! Recipes and holiday traditions for the book are being solicited through June 19, 1998, on our website at: http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/7186/form.html Orders may be placed when a recipe is submitted from there, or directly at: http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/7186/order.html If you do not have Internet access, you may email recipe and tradition submittals to: hcookbook@webtv.net Again, if you do not have Internet access orders only may be emailed to the following address: saundrak@m7.sprynet.com When emailing your submittal or order, please be sure to specify VOLUME 2 RECIPE or VOLUMEN 2 ORDER in the subject line. Books are $10 each, including tax and postage (US$13 for orders to Canada and Australia; pricing for other countries will be determined if orders are received). Payment must be by check or money order and received no later than July 10, 1998 (postdated checks cannot be accepted). We cannot process credit card orders. Payment not received by July 10 will result in an order being cancelled as the publisher requires their money when the order is placed (and the bank will hold out-of-state checks up to two weeks to clear). Checks drawn on US accounts or international money orders must be used. Remittance should be mailed to: "Homespun Cookbook" c/o 2200 Green Acres Dr. Rogers, AR 72758 We anticipate delivery of the cookbook about the end of November. They'll make wonderful Christmas gifts! We sincerely hope you will support this endeavor. Remember, ALL proceeds go to Rootsweb!! Should you have any questions on this project, please contact me. Shirley Homespun & Country-Kitchen list hostess kworth@gte.net PS - If you would like to puchase a copy of our first volume, we have a limited number available. Please contact Sandi (saundrak@m7.sprynet.com) immediately if you want to order. Payment is due within five days of the order being placed. Orders should be delivered by the end of June.

    3. A few days ago I posted a cemetery listing from Bossier Parish, LA, east of Plain Dealing off state Hwy. 157 to the north, very near the AR state line. [Sec 6, Twp 23N R12W] I listed John I. Wise -- that should be John J. Wise 03 Aug 1814 12 Apr 1875 and his wife Sara D. Lambright Wise 18 Dec 1824 18 Jul 1910 His name was John James Wise, a son of James Wise and Permelia Miller originally of SC and settlers in Claiborne Parish, LA. John James was one of at least 16 children; some researchers say 19! Her middle name is Dorcas. Sorry for the mis-infomation. That's how it was listed in a cemetery book, however; just wanted to correct the info. Ann Harper Bonner---of north Louisiana, descended from the Wise's oldest son Joseph F. Wise m Carolina Lambright. [At least 4 of the children of James and Permelia married into the Lambright family.]

There are two roads where signs direct one to the church. The road nearest Plain Dealing seems to be the one where the searcher is told to turn left [north] and go 4 miles. The community where the church is was once known as the Alabama Community. John I. Wise 03 Aug 1814 - 12 Apr 1875 Sara D. 1. RootsWeb in February -- 1,000,000+ Hits Per Day
    2. Brian Leverich
    3. This note is going to tell you that RootsWeb set a new record level of service to the genealogical community last month, but a more important message that I'd like to convey first is just how important your support has been. RootsWeb wouldn't be here without you. In February, without your support we couldn't have purchased a generator to keep the servers up during the El Nino storms, a new search engine server for the USGenWeb and mailing list archives, and a new server to host Cyndi Howells' Website and the USGenWeb query systems. Your continued support is essential to us: just to keep up with demand, in the next few weeks we're going to have to upgrade the main Web server, upgrade the mail hub server, and start preparing to add a third list server. All that costs money. And beyond those inescapable upgrades, we really want to be building a kitty for buying genealogical datasets and bringing more new services online for the whole community. If you can spread the word and help us find more Members, Sponsors, and Donors, you'll be helping us keep up with demand and bring new data and services online. *** AND NOW FOR THE REPORT *** February was an incredible month: El Nino storms repeatedly caused us to lose power, and I wound up having to 4-wheel- drive off the mountain in a snowstorm to find and buy a generator to keep RootsWeb online. Because of our batteries and our generator, we were down only minutes even though the power was off for days. Also, Cyndi Howells' Website moved to RootsWeb right in the middle of the storms and the USGenWeb query system needed more CPU cycles and bandwidth, so we added a server and load balanced our T1 connections to the Internet right in the midst of all the snowfalls and power outages. We had about 11% absolute growth during just the month of February, but that's deceptively low because February is a short month. Our actual *daily* load increased about 20%: o 29,372,613 Web files (27,751,946 in Jan) from 2,488 Websites (2,400 in Jan). - 8,602,112 were HTML pages (not images or cgi-bin) (8,308,561 in Jan). - 3,446,096 were cgi-bin database searches and such. (3,574,701 in Jan). - 17,248,967 were GIFs (15,850,655) or JPEGs (1,398,312) (15,784,790 in Jan were GIFs (14,529,204) or JPEGs (1,255,586). o 644,950 FTP file downloads from the USGenWeb Archives and the ROOTS-L Library (618,762 in Jan). o Thanks to a neat hack by Tim Pierce, we know we shipped about 82,150,000 pieces of mail (88,649,000 in Jan) pieces of mail to the 3,050+ (2,600 in Jan) mailing lists we host. (The 82 million is probably low; we had to archive a significant amount of mail before the count because of a disk space crunch on one of the mail servers ... ) o 60,000 alt.g and s.g.* Usenet News articles to hosts on three continents (same as Jan). o Approximately 505,361,000,000 bytes in total (451,786,000,000 in Jan). And that's what RootsWeb did in February. Let me thank you once again for supporting RootsWeb -- none of this would be available to the community without your help, and your continuing support can help us grow and provide even more service to the community. Abigail Ann Wise was the daughter of David & Apeloma (Lamb) Wise. Can anybody help me with this mess? I'll take any and all info. Thank you. Chuck.

    3. Hi, Ann: Thanks for your response. I apologize for my delay in responding. It's been a wild week, and I just today had a chance to compare what was in your message against info that I have in my files. It's interesting that you mentioned Coryell Co. since I live in Temple (Bell Co.) just a few miles from the Coryell Co. line. Other nearby counties are Milam, McLennan, Williamson, Falls,McLampasas, and Burnet. I checked the 1880 Census Index for WISE in Coryell Co. and found the following names, some of which have ages and state of birth given in the Soundex: Lemuel, Levi, Reuben H. (26 LA), and William E (24 LA). The index lists the following WISE names for Bell Co.: Francis M. (50 MS), Mary Jane, and Nary or Mary (1858 LA). Do any of these sound familiar? There was another WISE family in Milam Co. in the early days, reportedly coming from the area of Elba, AL via other areas in TX. It was the family of Robert Esson Wise (b. 1860, s/o John Quincy Wise) and Helen Virginia McGehee of Coffee Co., AL. Their children were John A. (b. 1886), Jesse P. (b. 1891), Luther Q. (b. 1894), and Collas L (b. 1896). Most or all of this family eventually left this area. I have been unable to determine whether or not they are related to my WISE line. I wish I knew more about "my" Nathan WISE. I haven't even been able to verify that the Nathan WISE who is reported to be my ancestor is actually the father of my g-g-g-grandfather, Richard WISE, who moved from SC to Pike (Crenshaw) Co., AL. His son, Samuel James WISE, died in Crenshaw Co., after which his daughter-in-law, Caroline (Brunson) Wise, several children moved to Milam Co., TX where many of the WISE descendants still reside. If you'll send me a little more detailed info on your WISE family, I'll see what I can find for you in this area. Until next time, HAPPY HUNTING! 3. Hi, Trudy! Thank you for your response. I apologize for my delay in responding, but it has been wild around here this week; and I'm just now getting around to checking on my WISE info for you. In the early days, there was another WISE family in Milam Co. which came from Coffee Co., AL via some other areas in TX. I have been unable to find out if they are related to me, but I wonder if you're related to them. It was the family of Robert Esson WISE (b. 1860, s/o John Quincy WISE) and Helen Virginia McGEHEE of Coffee Co., AL. Their children were John A. (b. 1886), Jesse P. (b. 1891), Luther Q. There was a nice article about this family in the book, "Matchless Milam: History of Milam County, Texas". I keep hoping that something will surface during my research to indicate whether or not they're related to me. I'll let you know if I learn more about this family. If you know anything about them, I'd appreciate your sharing the info with me. Until next time, HAPPY HUNTING! Herren's father may have been Joseph WISE this particular Joseph died after 1830 in Coffee Co AL, whether there is a connection to James and Rebecca Massey WISE has not been proven or disproven yet. There seem to have been two Joseph's in GA one in Oglethorpe Co and the other in Wilkinson in 1820. Any information which may clear up this mystery will be greatly appreciated. >Trudy >

    3. Hello Janice Williams--read your posting of WISE/BULLOCK. Observed with interest your Nathaniel "Nathan" Wise b before 1744 in SC. Our earliest known Wise is James Wise b. 1783 possibly VA, possibly Marion Co. SC area. He married Permelia Miller in SC. The name of one of his brothers was Jesse Wise. Possibly their father was Ambrose Wise in SC. The Wises travled westward of course, but I do not know whether they ever lived in AL...they DID live in Copiah Co. MS [southern part] for a while, then migrated to Claiborne Parish, LA [northern part]. Some moved on to Texas...Coryell Co. comes to mind. One of James' and Permelia's sons was the Rev. David Nathan Wise. There were about 17 other children!! My ancestor was the son Joseph F. Wise. Could you give some counties in TX? Ann Harper Bonner paternal grandmother was a Wise
