    3. Ken, I'm jumping in on your reply to K. Ellis. Hope you don't mind. My 4th gr grandfather was Christian Wise who left an 1816 will in Hardy Co., Va (now WVA). Although there were 10 people in his household in the 1782/4 state census, I have only been able to come up with four of his children and nothing on a wife. The four known children are Frederick who m Elizabeth Ketner (my line); Lydia who m George Wilkins; Barbara who m Thomas Stone; John. The only one whose date of birth I have is Barbara who was born 1769. Your John's date of birth would certainly put him in the right time frame to fit in as a child of Christian Wise. Mary Louise

    3. Mary Louise, I appreciate your E-mail. Any hope of solving this mystery is welcomed. However, I wonder if any of Christian's children were in or lived in Rockingham County. John certainly died there for I have seen his tombstone along with Hannah's (his wife) and some of his children and in-laws graves. In those days apparently, every eldest son was named John in the WISE family and I have a feeling that his father also was named John. You're right, the time frame is right on. Maybe we have something here. We'll keep plugging away. Regards, Ken

    3. Dear K.Ellis- I hope you don't mind the name I am addressing this message to, but I don't know another to which to send it. Anyway my name is Ken WISE and I am descended from John Wise who is buried on a piece of land called Wiseland near a town called Keezletown which is itself near Harrisonburg, Va. This John Wise as near as I have been able to find out died in Rockingham County and was born circa 1760-67. He is my 5th Ggrandfather and I have his descendants from his death on to the present. I have not, however, been able to determine either his parents names and origins or his wife's maiden name and her parents and origins. I would like to find all this out if possible. Your John WISE apparently came along later. My John's wife's first name was Hannah and she is buried alongside her husband. I have visited their graves.

    3. [ My apologies to the folks who have multiple or incorrect subscriptions to LISTOWNERS-ANNOUNCE; I'll get that subscription list cleaned up as soon as I can. -B ] [ This is a public announcement -- it may be forwarded to any appropriate audience. -B ] The new search engine server is now online and can operate at the speed of a full T1 connection. Courtesy of hacks by Dale Schneider, you can search the USGenWeb Archives, now with *headlines* and *updated* to within the last 24 hours, at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm Courtesy of hacks by Karen Isaacson, you can search the archives of any mailing list (except those withdrawn by the listowner), now with nicer *formats* and *updated* to within the last 24 hours, at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl I'd also like to explicitly thank the folks who provided the resources that have made this new facility possible: o RootsWeb's Patrons, Donors, Sponsors, and Members. o Palladium Interactive, developers of the Ultimate Family Tree software for genealogists. Folks interested in helping RootsWeb provide new facilities can become Members by using the Web form at: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html By the way, the next server we'll be bringing online will be a box dedicated to supporting Marc Nozell's HTMLized versions of the mailing list archives. We should have that box online within 48 hours, though it's reasonable to expect Marc to need a little time after that to get his software installed. (: Projects after that include a dedicated IRC server, upgrading the mail hub, upgrading the main Web server, building a NT-based FrontPage server, bringing a "dirtylists" list server online, and bringing a third ordinary list server online. [ The "dirtylists" server is for the big, rarely used announcement lists. We've developed a number of those things with 5,000 to 300,000 subscribers, and every time a post drops we kick the daylights out of the list server with hundreds or even thousands of bounces. We need a specially tuned box to handle these turkeys. ] No rest for the wicked, I suppose ... 2. gooch
    3. I am looking for information on Johann Weiss. He was the son of Conrad Weiss and Katherine Fredrich. He married Margaret Mittman. Johann was born in 1844. I do not know the exact area that he came from. All I know is that it was part of White Russia. This was a border zone of Russia, Germany, and Poland. Eventually it became Russia during WW II. Different sons of his listed their birth places in each of the above places. According to my great Aunt it could have been all three, depending on the time frame. Johann's wife died before he immigrated. He brought over his daughters and settled in Eureka, WI (Winnebago Co.) His sons joined him several years later. His children were as follows 1. Ida 1876-1967 married William Block 2. Daniel 1878-1960 married Minnie Roggow 3. William 1885-1986 married Amanda Hubrig 4. Olga 1887 - 1984 married William Roggow 5. Emelia ? married Gottlieb Block 6. Emma ? married Arthur Stienke 7. John b.? - 1938 in Kenosha, WI married Julie Reiter daughter of William Reiter and Amelia Stach (k) 8. 1. WEISS; DEU<IL; 1870-present
    2. Heather Crowley
    3. Hello group. I understand WEISS to be a variant of Wise, so I will post a quick message in hopes it looks familiar to someone. I'm looking for any links to the following ancestors: Christian Frederick WEISS came to the US from Chemnitz, Saxony, DEU around 1873, with a wife, Martha (VOGEL) Weiss, and at least one son, Carl Albin, age two. Based on old Lutheran church records from IL (specifically Roselle, Schaumburg, and Evanston) I can deduce that many relatives of Christian and Martha came to the US with them, or around the same time, namely WEISS and VOGEL. Carl married Amanda MEYER in IL, became a Lutheran minister, and had six kids: Clara, spinster; Frieda, spinster; Paul (whereabouts unkown, though probably in the Chicago area); Alvin (whereabouts unknown, though probably in the Chicago area), Rev. Theodore; and my grandpa, Rev. Oswald WEISS. These kids were born between 1896 and 1916, all are deceased. If any of these names look familiar to anyone, please let me know. I'm stuck at the moment, and could use a good lead. Heather
