    3. Does anyone have any information on George Wise, who was born in Maryland in around 1790 and then moved to Ohio sometime before his son William was born in 1820. William married Mary Kendall, who was also born around 1820 in Ohio? I have no other infomation on George Wise except he died in 1875 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. I do not know the name of his wife or parents. From census reports, George's wife was also born in Maryland. Mary Kendall 's father was born in Maryland also, but I do not have his name. Her mother was born in Virginia and we believe her name to be Elizabeth Couts. I am new to the Roots-web and I hope I have submitted this query correctly. My Wise family web site is at---- web.tusco.net/wisenct/ My email address is --- mitchlwise@tusco.net Thank You Mitchell L. Wise Newcomerstown, Ohio

    3. Dear L. Wise: Saint Mary's County Historical Society (SMCHS), P. O. Box 212, Leonardtown, Maryland, 20650, 301.475.2467. (If you are interested, regular membership dues are $25.00 per year. I would recommend membership.) There is a book "The Wise Family," by Lavitor Alex Gilliam, Jr. at the SMCHS Research Library. I do not have the year of publication or the publisher. It documents the Wises from England to the USA with the arrival of Richard Wise approximately 1692. It has about three pages on William Wise, son of Richard. It might have more later in the book, but I only have copies of the first fourteen pages. I think, (I am not sure) that a large part of the book focuses on the southern Wise's (Kentucky, Louisiana?).The author references another book, "The Boston Family Of Maryland," by Dr. Matthew Wise. Does anyone know about "The Boston Family Of Maryland" by Dr. Matthew Wise? I would like to find it. I haven't started looking yet. Joan Wise Rogers

    2. Another good reference is "Colonel John Wise ... His Ancestors and Descendants", by J. C. Wise, 1918. It provides history and family tree of Col. John Wise (1617-1665) of Accomac VA, ancestor of Gov. Henry Wise, who arrived in colonies aboard the John and Catherine in 1635. Includes origins of family in Devonshire prior to 1066. J Polk

    2. Thanks for the information on Richard Wise of St. Marys Co., MD. I believe that my line runs through his son William, although my information on the next couple of generations (down to Thomas and then George Wise) is pretty sketchy. The descendants I am tracking moved on to Monongalia Co., WV (or VA at that time). Some of them moved on to Missouri, while my line stayed in WV. I would be very interested in comparing information on later generations. Can you tell me how to get in touch with the St. Marys County Historical Society? Thanks.

    3. Dear L Wise: I am a direct descendant of Richard Wise of Saint Mary's County (SMC). I have a great deal of information about this line and there is a great deal of information at the St. Mary's County Historical Research Library. I have verified only back to James Clinton Wise (Senior), 1815-1861, my great-great-grandfather. Richard Wise (circa 1647-circa 1731) was believed to have been born in Warwickshire, England, and arrived in SMC at or prior to 1692-93. He had four children: William, Adam, Frances, and Matthew Wise. Does this look like the line your are referring to? -----Original Message----- From: WISE-D-request@rootsweb.com <WISE-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: WISE-D@rootsweb.com <WISE-D@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, October 13, 1998 6:20 AM Subject: WISE-D Digest V98 #107

    3. Bonnie--thanks for your info on Patton Wise b 1778 [do you know where?] and living in Clark Co. GA later [do you know when?] Did he died in Clark Co.? Also thanks for the info on Joseph Wise/Margaret Patton and son Patton b 1769 NC. A correspondent in Oregon has 4 Patton Wises related. Two of them were sons of brothers John Wise and Joseph Wise. Then each of them named sons Patton--accounts for those 4. No dates given. Joseph Wise [so I assume John also] was the s/o James Wise and wife Rebecca Massie of Wake Co., NC. This fact from Oregon gets me interested because my ancestor James WISE of SC had a son Levi WISE who married Louisa MASSEY, I suspect in MS. My James WISE had settled in Copiah Co. MS by 1830, set off from Hinds Co. in 1823. Oregon told me another Patton Wise was the s/o Sherwood Wise, who married a Patton, sister to Joseph Wise's wife. Oregon suspects that Sherwood is the s/o the brother of the above mentioned James Wise and Rebecca Massie. That brother was Thomas and his wife was Mary Massie/Massey. In Hinds Co. MS there is a John Wise family cemetery; the family from VA, says a Wise correspondent. One of the gravestones is for John, son of James and Rebecca MASSIE WISE. John was b 1778 NC d 1840 MS. 3. Elaine mentioned that the above Henry and Margaret were of TN to MO and had a son named James. So I don't think the James Wise I mentioned could be of that family, since ours did not venture to those states. I had queried about Patton WISE of Jasper Co. GA because of a reference I'd seen in a journal. Fred Wise and Jeannette Culbrieth answered. My line James WISE [1781 SC - 1858 LA] went from Marion Co. SC to Copiah Co. MS by 1830 and Claiborne Par. LA by 1840. Many children married LAMBRIGHTs. We're seeking James WISE's parents. Some have surmised Ambrose WISE is his father since one of his sons had that name, but no proof for that. James' children: Joseph F., Archibald, John James, Adah Sarah, Nancy Jane, Ambrose, Ivan, Gilbert, Gideon, Levi, Giles, Obedience, Celia Ann, David Nathan, Delilah. Ann Harper Bonner gbonner@cbt.net
