    1. Re: James Wise, Johnston Co., N.C.
    2. If you will look in the US GenWeb Project Archives, (get in thru www. rootsweb.com), Contributed to the GenWeb by Jerome Tew, jdtew@esn.net: The 1769 Tax List of Dobbs County, NC lists the following taxable persons: James Wise and son Isaac ( 2 males - white) James Wise (1 male ) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------- As contributed by Martha Mewborn Marble, 1377 Independence AVe, S.E., Washington, D.C., the GenWeb Project Archives also contain: Johnston/Dobbs/Lenoir Counties (NC) Grantor Index -- Book 5, Apr 1757 - Apr1758: From: Rice, Eason To: Thomas Wise Page 457 From: Sessions, Joseph To: James Wise Page 644 Ms. Marble's contribution explained that in 1758, Dobbs County was formed from the eastern part of Johnston County and that (Old) Dobbs includes today's Wayne, Green, Lenoir, and small portions of several other counties. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------- In the 1790 census, Thomas, William, and John Wise in Mecklenburg County and John, Issac, James, and Josiah in Wayne County. This James Wise in Wayne County might be one of the James listed in the abstracts above from the GenWeb Archives. Could he also be the James Wise of Johnston Co. posted? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ MY FAMILY LINE: I need to know about Benjamin Wise who was living in Mecklenburg County at the 1790 census, born about 1765 - 1775. Need information on parents, siblings, tax and indenture records, any placenames or former locations, etc. Benjamin moved to Burke County in the 1790's, married Sarah Culbertson, had 3 sons and land also seems to have had daughters. Son Josiah G.was born c. 1795 , d. 1 Oct 1846. Son James born c. 1797. Son William C. (Culley) the youngest. James and Josiah on the 1840 census Yancy County. James also on the Yancy Co. 1860 and 1880. Josiah moved to Avery County in the 1820's where he owned land near the Linville River with brother James. In 1820's Josiah married Margaret (Peggy) Davis. Josiah was a Justice of Burke County Court of Pleas n 1831; brother William C. was a Justice in 1855. Josiah was a commissioner for the survey when Yancy County was formed from Buncombe and Burke Counties in 1833. Josiah is also listed as a schoolteacher in a part of Watauga County that is now Avery County. If anyone can supply any clues to Benjamin, please reply to: bmccay@aol.com

    2. Joan Rogers writes: Where was George Wise from? Was he was SMC or was "his family" from SMC? Same question for Jane King. Do you have any other information about George Wise and his parentage? Reply: I believe that the George Wise (b. 1773) mentioned above was the son of Thomas Wise (b. 1736, SMC, MD) and Sarah Lewis. One researcher indicated that Thomas died in SMC, which would suggest that his children were all born there, but I don't have any firm evidence on George's birthplace. I also don't know anything about either Jane King or Sarah Lewis and would be very interested to hear from anyone who does. I am hoping to be able to visit the St. Mary's County Historical Society Library in the near future and see what I can dig up. Some of my information comes from World Family Tree files distributed by Broderbund and is not well documented (if at all). Other children shown for Thomas and Sarah are: - Thomas (b. 1760, SMC; m. Milley (1) Robinson and (2) Mary Humpheries) - William (b 1763, SMC; m. Elizabeth Rose) - Jermiah (b. Apr 15, 1764, SMC) - Charles (b. 1765, d. 1820) - Ranseau (b. Jan 1, 1766, SMC) - Hannah (B. 1767) - John (b. 1769) - Mary Ann Wise (b. 1770) - George (b. 1773, see above) - Richard (b. 1775) Sources show Thomas to be the son of Richard Wise (b. 1708, d. 1778 SMC) and Mary Milburn. (a total of 10 children with birthdates ranging from Richard in 1730 to Margaret in 1763). This Richard is shown as the son of Richard Wise, who came to SMC about 1695. I had originally shown this Richard as the grandson of the emigrand Richard through William (b. 1685) and am still somewhat skeptical because the emigrant Richard would have been about 60 when this Richard was born in 1708. 3. I'm looking for info on Hannah Wise, wife of Frank Mudgett of Ottumwa, IA . The info I have up to this point was found in my grandmother's (Olive Mudgett Johnson) notebook. Hannah Wise Mudgett died Dec 6, 1936 and her husband Frank died Jan 12, 1910. Hannah Wise's mother was Hannah Johnson Wise and was married to possibly Edward or George (died jan 1, 1929) Wise from Wapello Co., Iowa. Other names in the notebook (which I need info on) are: Ebenezer Wise who died Jun 2, 1865, age 86; Dorcas Wise who died Mar 30, 1863, age 90; and Robert Wise who died Mar 11, 1897, age 78. Any information on these individuals is greatly appreciated.

    2. The Isaac Wise from Monongalia Co. in my database was born about 1839. His parents were John Wise (born 1816) and Henrietta Thomas. Perhaps the Isaac Born 1818 in Morgantown was a brother. I believe that John Wise also had brothers Thomas (b. about 1821, Battelle District, Monongalia, VA; d. Oct 23 1890) and Alfred (b. about 1814). Their parents were George Wise (b. 1773) and Jane King.

    3. May 9, 1928 / Obituary in NEWCOMERSTOWN (OHIO) NEWS: SAMUEL I. WISE DIES IN MISSOURI Samuel I. I > will send the .jpg file to your private address as an attachment. > (Attachments are not permitted to be sent to the list.) > ______________________________ - ---------------------------- I do have some info on this George Wise. My Iowa Connection THE IOWA CONNECTION My name is Mitchell Wise. I live and have spent most of my life in Ohio, particularly Tuscarawas County, in the Village of Newcomerstown. I am 38 years old, having been born in 1958. I knew growing up as a kid that I had some close relatives living in Oklahoma, but not until my recent research into my family's geneology did I discover I had an "Iowa Connection". My great-great grandfather, William T. Wise was a private in the 32nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Division. William T. had a difficult military career. He was taken prisoner of war in 1862, had his gun explode in his face in 1863, and was shot in the left leg just above the left knee at the seige of Atlanta in 1864. After returning from the war in 1865, William T.'s trouble may have only just begun. While working for the railroad in 1875, a small sliver of iron from a rail he was cutting lodged in his left eye. This eye would be removed within the next few years leaving him with only the sight of his right eye which was affected by the gun exploding in 1863. William T. , the father of five children, still worked for the railroad though his eyesight made it very difficult. He was drawing a pension of $6.00 per month from the army for the gun shot wound, but needing more he tried (without success) to get addition pension money for his right eye. A special examiner was sent to the area to obtain depositions from family, friends, neighbors, employers, and doctors as to the condition of William T. before he went into the Army and his condition upon returning. From these handwritten depositions we have learned a tremendous amount about William T.'s life before, during, and after the Civil War. William T. gave his deposition February 16th,1892. In it he states: "After my discharge, I was at home for two months but did no work. In September '65 I went to Eddyville, Wapello County, Iowa and drove team for Phillip Dotts (or Dutts), a coal dealer and farmer to the march of 1867. I boarded with Dotts (Dutts). I knew Hiram (Shoben?), farmer, Ira Brown, laborer, Samuel (Crow?), laborer, and others which names I cannot give. I had the (billions?) fever soon after I went there and a doctor from Eddyville treated me for it, I can't give his name, I was at Dotts' at the time. I came home in the spring of 1867 and ...." Annie M. Wise, William T.'s older sister also added this information in her deposition: "I think he (William T.) stopped at Eddyville, Iowa with our uncle George Wise, now dead. Don't know how long he was there, nor can I tell whether he was at work then.Thomas Dotts (Dutts), our uncle lives at Eddyville." The special investigator taking the deposition spelled "Dutts" as you see here but the handwriting on William T.s deposition makes it unclear and a I am unsure of the correct spelling. William T.'s brother, Samuel I. Wise also fought in the Civil War and after he returned home in 1865 to Ohio, he married Sarah Norris and began his family. Samuel died in 1928 in Missouri and his obituary contained this Iowa connection: " moved his family of five children and his first wife, Sarah Norris (from Ohio) to a farm near Ottumwa, Iowa in 1881" Samuel and his family left Iowa five years later and moved to Caldwell County, Missouri and later he was living in Cameron when he died. Samuel and Sarah were married in 1872 so when they left Iowa in 1886 their oldest child was probably not yet thirteen years old so I suspect all of his children left Iowa with him. Checking the road atlas, I discovered Ottumwa and Eddyville are only separated by 20 miles of Iowa farm land. Another twist to this story is a man named Elias Kendall, William T. and Samuel's Mother's brother, their uncle. The 1860 Ohio census for Tuscarawas County, Jefferson Township, has a 41 year old laborer named Elias Kendall boarding on a farm owned by Thomas Dotts. Mr. Dotts, age 56, also has an 18 year old son named Thomas B. Dotts. We know William T. returned to Ohio and Samuel went on to Missouri. The George Wise mentioned may have returned to Ohio with William T. or he may have been living there before William arrived and stayed there when he left. There is a George Wise buried in Bethel Cemetery, Salem Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio along side three of William T. and Samuel's siblings, but he died in 1875 at the age of 84. If this is the same George Wise that was in Iowa, he would have been in his late 70's while doing this traveling. My best guess is the George Wise that was in Iowa is William T.'s father's brother, his uncle and the George Wise buried in Ohio is William T.'s grandfather. The Dotts family on the other hand could be related to William T.'s mother's side of the family. At this point that is unclear. But is is very clear that the Wise family in Ohio has an "Iowa Connection". Anyone having any interest, information, or question about this story is encouraged to contact me at (614)-498-4562. 2. Hello: My great grandfather was John W. Wise, born June 29, 1825. He married Emily Tullos, b. Dec. 25, 1838. Their children were: William F. b. 1852 Nancy A. b. 1854 Mary M. b. 1856 Permelia E,b. 1866 M. b. 1867 Cintha J. b. 1869 Sarah E. b. 1871 Winslow B. b. 1878 John W. Wise was the minister for a small Baptist church in Jackson Parish, LA, and is buried in its cemetery. According to census records John came from Miss. However son William was born in Ark. I don't know who John's father was. A lady who is researching him also said James B. Wise and Nancy A. Sexton may be his parents. She also had some info that John had been married before, possibly to a Scarborough. We don't know the marriage date. The courthouse in Jackson Parish was burned so if he married either one in this parish there is no record. If anyone has ever run across either of these, I would appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction. Thanks a lot; Jo Ann Z.
