The real bible for passenger lists is the PILI, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, which is now up to 20 volumes, each like a NY City phone directory. The first volume appearded in 1982 and a new addendum is added yearly. It is arranged alphabetically by surname and given name, and almost any roster of passengers or immigrants to US or Canada that ever appeared anywhere has been incorporated. Most of the older lists from colonial era were included in the early volumes. As new lists are identified they get added to later volumes. It is now up to about 3,000,000 names. To do a complete job you have to work your way thru all of the volumes looking up the surname you are interested in. Keep in mind that PILI is only an index, but it does list basic information such as ship name, year and port of entry. For more information you have to find the source list that it refers you to. In some cases this may not be that easy. All lists are available somewhere, but you may need to get to a pretty good library to find a particular one. John Polk Havre de Grace, MD
