Dennis, What information do you have on WISE in Butts Co, GA and when? Our James WISE almost had to come through GA although our records seem to indicate no significant stops between Marion Co, SC and Copiah Co, Miss. before their move about 1830 to Claiborne Parish, LA (up on the Arkansas line). At this moment I'd look in Alaska for clues about his parents -- GA sounds much more likely though.... One of his grandsons married Martha Caroline HAYNES from Heard Co. GA, daughter of Benjamin Franklin HAYNES. Dot Wise Wirth dotwirth@aol.com <<This sure sounds like Butts Co., Georgia. These are the same surnames I'm looking for in Butts Co., GA. Kuz'n AL, Good find. Kuz'n Ocie Wise Davis of Bloomingdale, Ga. told me that her grandma Louanzie was buried next to Polly Wise (nee: Bird), but I don't recall looking for or finding a headstone to confirm it. Anyway, your findings confirm what Ocie said, so I updated my notes - - and below is what now shakes out on Louanzie (also our kuz'n). I did not know that an index of the WISE Cemetery existed??? Is it very large? If not, could you send me a copy when you get time? If it's too large, where can I purchase a copy? Thanks again for sharing. Kuz'n JOHN F. Try Bullitt Co. or Jefferson Co.,KY. My gr,gr,grandfather, Henry H. Wise, was married in Bullitt Co. in 1818,and moved to Jeferson Co. by 1850, and Webster Co. abt.1853. I am looking for his father, too. There were a few other Wises in Bullitt and Jefferson Co. around 1800, but I cannot connect to any yet. I am looking through my records , and find a John Wise in Mason Co.,1800 Census or Tax List. I don't see your Wises in any notes I have on Bullitt Co., but try Mason and Jefferson Co. Frank Melton

Patricia - Got to be a connection between your Samuel HAYNES and my Benjamin Franklin HAYNES whose daughter married Jasper Newton WISE although I haven't found it either. Did you know that a community about 2 miles south of what is now Shongaloo was originally called Wiseville? You might find the following interesting: ".... About "10" of his (James WISE & Permelia MILLER) sons came over to Webster Parish and settled at Wiseville, about two miles south of what is now Shongaloo, Louisiana. One son, J. G. WISE was a doctor, Dover(?) WISE was a preacher, the others were merchants and farmers. The Civil War scattered and took its toll in this family. Two died in service. Dr. G. J. WISE lost his home and slaves while away in war. After returning from fighting, he took his wife and two small children and went over to the present site of Shongaloo, Louisiana and continued practice. At this time, the place was an Indian village, whose highways were cow-trails and deer trails. Later he moved onto a homestead a mile west of town and retired from practice." Sheet obtained from descendant of Giles James WISE, Ralph MILLER, 1991. Benjamin Franklin HAYNES, Jasper Newton WISE and his family remained in the area east of Haynesville. Benjamin F. HAYNES and three of Jasper Newton WISE's children are buried in an almost forgotten cemetery just south of the state line off the road from Haynesville, LA to ElDorado, Arkansas. There were two cemeteries at State Line (aka Mineral Springs), Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, Sec. 6 Twp 23 Range 5 about 2 miles southeast of LA Hwy. #61 at the Arkansas State line. According to "Cemetery Inscriptions of Claiborne Parish, Louisiana Volume III" compiled by Elinor McCalman Seward and Wanda Volentine Head, published by J & W Enterprises, 2838 Jody Lane, Shreveport, Louisiana 71118, these were surveyed on February 16, 1985 with only a few graves located. In one cemetery identified as the State Line Baptist Cemetery, the only marker located was for John M. BROWN 1814-1898. In the other, which they called State Line Methodist Cemetery, they identified three markers. Only one of these was intact in May 1999 when the site was visited by Dot WISE WIRTH and Levelle HAYNES: a four-sided ceramic-coated metal spire with the word WISE on one side and the name of one of three children of Jasper Newton and Martha Caroline HAYNES WISE on each of the other sides: Leona Leoti WISE b. 26 MAY 1879 d. 5 JUL 1884; A. (Alexander) MILO WISE b. 10 MAR 1871 d. 18 OCT 1885; and P. (Philander) Hazellow WISE b. 14 NOV 1873 d. 30 APR 1886. A granite marker for Benjamin F. HAYNES b. 22 - 1817 (father of Martha Caroline) is broken but still at his gravesite about 20 feet north northwest of the WISE marker. The bottom portion of a marker showing the death date of Robert F. HAYNES (4 AUG 1878) along with some other marker fragments is piled with the B. F. HAYNES marker. Apparently the Robert F. HAYNES marker was complete in 1985 as his marker was said to read, Robert F. HAYNES b. 03 SEP 1871 d. 04 AUG 1878. Robert was the son of R. B. HAYNES. As Jasper N. and Mattie WISE were members of the State Line Church which is identified as Baptist and Benj. F. HAYNES was Methodist it seems as if the Baptist and Methodist chose to share a cemetery at State Line just as they did (and do) at Colquitt. <<on 4/13/99, Rontrisha@aol.com wrote to HAYNES-L@rootsweb.com I am the wife of a Samuel HAYNES descendant. ... As previously stated, the town was named after old Sam according to the info the family has handed down and he settled there in about 1855. He sold land in troup Co, Ga in 1854. They settled in Claiborne Parish in a place then called Taylor's Store which was later named Haynesville. They did not remain there but for a year before moving on to around Shongaloo.>>
Here's a puzzle for you:. Harris JOHNSON (age 18, 1850 census, Claiborne Parish, LA) would have been born about 1832. Polly WISE JOHNSON b. 1821 would have been about 29 which means she can't be Harris's mother. Polly can't be a daughter of James & Permelia WISE, but she could be a daughter of James B. and Nancy WISE. 3/17/1998 - Bernice Andrews Wise spoke with a JOHNSON family in Claiborne Parish, LA. The Johnsons have a picture of Polly WISE b. 9 MAR 1812 d. 27 JUN 1874 who married Buck JOHNSON in Mississippi. The Johnsons have a land abstract that shows Polly and Buck receiving 50 acres of land from James WISE before he died. Mrs. Johnson says the only reason they were able to get it was because they were related to James Wise. Polly's birthdate is too close to Jasper N.'s birthday for them to be brother and sister. Possibly Polly was a niece of James WISE. The JOHNSON family has a reunion (3rd Sunday in April) in Morton, Miss on Hwy 80 - just off I-20 - about 30 miles the other side of Jackson going toward Meridian. My WISE ancestor is Isaac Wise, generation 4 in the report below. Isaac has been a stumbling block, for we have been unable to determine who his parents were. This genealogy, without supporting documentation was passed on to me. Several on this list have posted information that mentions some of the names in this list. I would like to know if anyone has information linking Isaac Wise to parents FREDERICK WISE and ELIZABETH BURSON. Also, I've had some correspondence with others who suggest that Isaac's wife was not Elizabeth McCollough, but Elizabeth, or Mary Elizabeth Lemon. Isaac and Elizabeth moved to Jackson Co., WV 1850-55 and later on to Wirt Co. WV. Elizabeth died in Wirt Co., WV and Isaac in Meigs Co., OH. It is definitely not this George Wise. The ones I am sending mail on are documented to be descendants of Adam Wise who came over from Germany in 1748, he changed his name to Wise when he signed the oath of allegiance when he got off the boat. The allegiance of course was to the King of England as he was coming to colony of that country. I wish I knew more about the later arrivals but I don't. I goofed on that first note, I should have paid more attention to spell checking. The marriage year is 1873, died in 1915, NOT 2925! Okay I should stick to my house building! Hope I caught all the errors. Hi Frank I have a little more that may be a connection. The Montgomery County 1880 census lists the following family: 100-102 Wise William W M 43 Saloon IL _ _ Cherryvale town Addie W F 22 Wife KS. IL. IL. Luther W M 22 son Clerk IL. IL. IL. Albert W M 20 son Clerk IL. IL.IL. John W M 14 son IL. IL. Edward W M 7 son KS. IL. IL. Myrtle E. W F 9/12 dau KS. IL.IL There is a notation which says: Wise Children - see William Seth 461-461 Seth William W M 39 Land Agent Ind. _ _ Independence Matilda W F 35 wife Ind. Ind. KY Dora Wise W F 6 s-dau KS. Pa. Ind. Carl Wise W M 3 s-son " " " Myrtle E. Wise at age 9 mos in 1880 would have been about 17 years old in 1896. The question is, could William Wise be the George in the announcement? If the census asked for first name and IF George was his middle name and IF he went by his middle name, it is possible that they are the same family. That may sound far-fetched, but many people use their middle names so exclusively that the only place the first name appears is on legal papers. My parents are a case in point. Both of them go by their middle names. In fact my mother's birth certificate has her listed as Ruth Neel, even though her entire given name is Sarah Ruth Neel. My dad's name on anything legal always ended up William Goble, but my wedding invitation, announcement listed me as the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Goble. Anyway, there it is for what it is worth. BTW, there were several other Wise families in Montgomery Co at the time of the 1880 census but not our elusive Sylvester. I was going through my files and found an announcement I copied from the Coffeyville [KS]Journal (Dec 26, 1896): "Mr. & Mrs. George Wise have issued invitations to the marriage of their daughter, Myrtle to Mr. Claude Welker, on Wednesday evening, December 30th at eight o'clock at the Baptist church. The reception will take place at the residence of the groom from nine till eleven o'clock of that evening." Does anyone have any information on this Wise family?
