    3. Hi Steve, I saw the message you sent to John. I couldn't help but comment on your name. My aunt married William Paul who was killed in 1915 in France during the war. I wonder if there's any connection. He married my aunt who is a Wyse, different spelling to you but quite a coincidence. 3. John - Glad to see the tribute to the Veterans that Mike posted. I second his feelings. I noticed he mentioned Joseph Paul Wise. This is a long shot but it's worth a try................ My 4th Great Grandfather was John H. Paul, in 1825 he married Mary Wise in Craven Co., N.C. I have much information about John but know nothing about Mary. Can you forward this message to Mike? 3. Ceryl, All of my kin after 1820, are descendants of Joseph Wise, who came to what is now Coffee County, Al. However, they are now scattered all over America- from Maine to California and -from Michigan to Florida. Happy searching, Mary Agnes Wise

    3. By any chance do you have any Wise from Winona, Minnesota. Or is most of your research in the south? John Jacob Wise came from Baden, Germany to Attica, New York prior to 1860. He is listed on the 1860 census. He then moved to Utica, Missouri about 1866. Then his family moved to Winona, Minnesota in 1882. There are quite a few Wises in Winona. 1. Re: Wise
    2. **************************************************************************** * First of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA! Regardless of how hopelessly spoiled, unknowing, ungrateful, selfish, uninformed, smug, and screwed up the majority of our "Baby Boomers" and "Generation X" may be, God is still shedding his Grace on the United States of America - - from sea to shining sea. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA, you are beyond awesome! Let's use this day to remember the founding fathers of this country and our veterans . . . for life put them through a hell on earth. They deserve our remembrance, and the perpetual honor and respect from the whole civilized world for their service and sacrifice. I exclaim this to the world to specifically honor and remember my beloved Uncle JOSEPH GODFREY WISE, TSGT, U.S. ARMY, 504th Parachute Regiment, who was killed-in-action in France during the D-Day Invasion - - and of his namesake (and my favorite brother) JOSEPH PAUL WISE, CPO3, USN SEAL, who died after suffering years afterward from serious and crippling wounds received in Viet Nam, SEA. Like so many others of their generation, these two were good people, and they had the strength, morals, values, and true grit of our American ancestors that established and built this country. **************************************************************************** * Kuz'n Mike, I compared your listing against the records in my database and here's my comments: 1. RACHEL BARRY's surname is "BARRY". RACHEL is from a very prominent NC "BARRY" FAMILY - - PLUS one of her relatives was a famous western adventurer and gunfighter ______ BARRY. Have more info. on this family but I have not yet found it in my piles of "stuff" to enter in my FTW database notes. Also, the surname of "BARRY" makes me believe that her son's given name was "BARRY" - - instead of "BERRY," as commonly documented. (see below for more info. on RACHEL) 2. JAMES H. WILKINSON (1824-1900) . . . who married MARTHA MATILDA BREWTON (1830-1896). I have it that this JAMES died 6 Nov 1900. Also, don't really know if his wife's given name(s) was/were MARTHA, MATILDA, or MARTHA MATILDA BREWTON. Anyone out there know for sure? (see below for more info. on JAMES) Mike, which genealogy program are you using? Most of us "kuz'ns" are using Family Tree Maker for Windows (FTW). If you're using FTW, do you want me to send you a "mini" FTW database file on REBECCA WISE and descendants? This way you can get all the notes and references I have in their database records. If you're not using FTW, I can instead create and send you an equivalent "mini" GEDCOM file. Let me known. Have you seen my homepage yet? http://www.mindspring.com/~jfwise Hope this info. helps. 2. Jim Wise
    3. There is a new resource, Classified Ads Boards, that can now be found from a link on the cluster page for our surname. As you know the Cluster page serves as a navigation aid to all resources for our surname housed on RootsWeb. The Cluster page for the WISE surname can be found at: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/w/i/WISE/ You know that advertising (even when it can be helpful in our genealogical research) is generally not allowed on our mailing list and GenConnect boards. In an effort to help genealogists locate genealogical items, or list items being offered for sale, for example, out of print books you might be looking to sell or purchase, RootsWeb has created Classifieds at RootsWeb. These Classified Ad Boards work in the same way the GenConnect boards work and are only to be used for items of a genealogical nature pertaining to the surname shown on the board. These boards provide an outlet to help in our research for items that couldn't be properly listed elsewhere on RootsWeb. Enjoy them and use them to your best advantage!

    2. Tom Dunklin
    3. Hello Wise Rootsweb List Members: I am not a subscriber but I have discovered an Elizabeth Wise in my Groover search and hope someone on your list can help me. Elizabeth Wise married Solomon Groover c. 1798, probably in Georgia. One of their children was William W. Groover, born 1809 in Bulloch County, Ga. I am searching for information about his 3 wives and hope that someone researching Elizabeth Wise Groover might have a profile of William and his families. Most of his adult life was probably spent in Limestone/Freestone County, Texas and I feel his 2nd and 3rd wives were from this area. His first wife was Elizabeth Bird Heard of Ga., his 2nd was supposedly a Rebecca Busby (this may or may not be her maiden name) and his 3rd wife, I feel, would be my unknown gg grandmother Banks. If anyone can help me, please contact me. Paula Dunklin

I'll just tell you my story and see what you think. My great great grandfather was Thomas Wise b. about 1824, he was in the Civil War and in his papers he says he was born in Bedford County, Tennessee, but in another place there is Hardeman County, Tennessee. He had a brother William who was a preacher and went to Texas, in his papers he says both his grandfathers fought for the war of the rebellion. His father was Enoch G. Wise and his mother Elizabeth Barrett. William says his father (Enoch) was a pioneer settler of Tennessee, but came from the Carolina's. They left Tennessee and went to Randolph County, Illinois, where another son, Robert Ray Wise was born. Enoch is on the 1840 Census for Randolph County, Illinois, but apparently some of the familiy moved to Missouri and Arkansas. Enoch and Elizabeth are on the 1850 Carroll County, Arkansas census. By 1860 Enoch was not with the family. 1859, Robert Ray Wise married Cleopatra Pyle in Dade County, Missouri. They never had any children, and lived the rest of their lives in Newton County, Missouri. My Thomas Wise married Nancy Standlee and stayed in Carroll County, Arkansas. I also believe there was another son, Stephen Wise, but have lost him somewhere between Arkansas and Missouri. Like you I am not giving up. I went to Shelbyville, Tennessee trying to find something/anything that would link my Wise family to the Henry Wise family and just could not do it. Anything ring a bell. Janet Wise Eiskina

Powell, 1968, The University of North Carolina Press at Chapel Hill. Wise, community in n Warren County between Malones Creek and Sauls Creek. Alt. 392. Settled in 1890s and named for Henry Wise, local resident. A post office was est. there in 1891 but was discontinued in 1951. (Page 540) Wise Branch, rises in sw Buncombe County and flows ne into Bill Moore Creek. (Page 540) Wise Forks, community in nw Jones County. Named for local family. Known as Wise's Crossroads in 1863 when a Civil War engagement took place here on April 28. The battle is referred to variously as Wise's Crossroads, Dover Crossroads, and First Gum Swamp. See also Gum Swamp. (Page 540) Wise Knob, sw Buncombe County near the headwaters of Bill Moore Creek. (Page 540) Wiseman's View, nw Burke County, overlook for Linville Gorge. Named for William Wiseman, early settler who came from London in the 18th century. (Page 540) Wise's Crossroads, See Gum Swamp; Wise Forks. (Page 540) Gum Swamp rises in nw Jones County, w of the town of Dover, and flows nw into Craven County where it enters Tracey Swamp. Formerly both were known as Gum Swamp. Two Civil War engagements took place on Gum Swamp. One on April 23 and the other on May 22, 1863. The first engagement is called by various names - Wise's Crossroads, Dover Crossroads, and First Gum Swamp. (Page 208-209) "Scotland" could have been an error of interpretion after 1899 by those not familiar with the geography of North Carolina and inferring it to be the country of Scotland rather that Scotland County, North Carolina. 3. Joe, don't give up, I too know how hard it is. But I think in time you will find a connection with our Wise family. Could be cousins, uncle, etc. If I find anything out, I will contact you. Do you belong to the Wise list? 2. I'm trying to find the Wise family of Knoxville TN. I only have as far back as my paternal grandparents, Leonard Wise and Josephine (Jenkins) Wise. There are also relatives named Beulah and Andy, but I'm not sure where they fit in the family. There is also a connection (as cousins) to the Ruzich family. Many thanks, Lisa
