    1. Christian Wise VA/MD/PA
    2. Pamela S. Eagleson
    3. Trying to track down the ancestry of my Barbara WISE Stone. According to printed County histories she was born in 1769 near Baltimore MD the daughter of CHRISTOPHER Wise. She married Thomas Stone on 24 Feb. 1788 in Jefferson Co VA, lived in Hardy CO WVA for awhile (where father CHRISTOPHER/CHRISTIAN lived, is listed on tax lists, bought and sold land and died in 1816), and finally settled in Licking CO Ohio where she died 16 Sept. 1848. Orginally we thought this Wise family to be of English descent. However of late we believe them to be of German descent. Barbara is a common German given name. Christopher's name is sometimes listed as Christopher (census, tax lists, and original surveys where he is listed as one of the chain carriers on several of James Stone's surveys). Often in deeds and wills he is listed as Christian. (His 1816 Hardy Co WVA will mentions sons John and Frederick and dau Lydia) Wilkins) Following the near Baltimore MD birthplace several MD sources have been researched. From Frederick CO MD records: Book L. p. 402...agreement/bond written July 1768, recorded Aug 1768: ...now know ye that whereas Christian Wise, Barbara Wise, and Magdalena Wise of the aforementioned County hath by their father Christian Wise of Lancaster CO in PA Deceased left a legacy to each of his children aforesaid which said legacy the aforesaid legacy the aforesaid Christian, Barbara and Magdalena Wise Some years ago as will appear in the records of Lancaster CO Lefth therinwith olde esates in the hands of the aforesaid Samuel WOLGEMOTH now the said Samuel Wolgemoth doth haere by his heirs executors administrators and assigns...." Frederick Co Deed Book M. p. 7 March 1769 Samuel Wolgamot rgs (?) on Water Sink Washington CO MD Deed Book D p. 138 15 Sept 1769 (recorded 1785) articles of agreement between Samuel Wolgamoth of Frederick Co of the one part and Christian Wise, Barbara Wise and Magadelena Wise of the same county of the other part...that after the death of Samuel Wolgamoth they should hold in heirs of an equal part of all his estate which said bond by record 1768 in the same county agreed to void...now to show the consideration for said bond the said Christian Wise barbara Wise and Magdalena Wise did agree to with the said Samuel Wolgamoth for 62 acres of land part of land called the water sink... Frederick Co Md. DeedBook L p. 596 Dec 1769 ...at the request of Christian Wise the following dead was recorded: land called Water Sink sold to Christian Wise by Samuel Wolgamot Frederick Co MD. Deed Book P, p. 231 land indenture Christian Wise to John Wolgamot June 1772 Couldn't find anything after more on Christian Wise in Frederick CO MD.... If this is indeed the father of my Barbara he started appearing in Hardy CO records by the 1780s. Does anyone know anything about this WISE/WOLGAMOTH connection? I tried to get some info from Lancaster CO about this possible estate/legacy with no luck.

    2. G. S.
    3. Would anyone know of this family? A man with the last name of WISE married Mabel Weaver. Although Mabel was born in WV her family had moved to Ross Co. Ohio by 1920. So she was most likely married in OHIO. What was his first name? Any cousins out there? 2. I am researching a branch of the Wise family from Tennessee. My grandfather, Leonard Wise, was born about 1910 in Knoxville TN, and married Josephine Jenkins, born about 1905 in Jackson County TN. They moved to Peoria IL before their first child, James Bruce Wise, was born in 1941. They had two subsequent children, Patricia and William. I am at a standstill in my research and am becoming increasingly frustrated. Family lore has it that one of my paternal great grandmothers was pure blooded Cherokee. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it. I am at my wit's end, here. Blessings, Lisa Whittaker
