The Sauk County Historical Society gives a $5.00 per hour break for our members. We charge $10.00 per hour for members and $15.00 per hour for non members. Yep, we are surely slow. This summer I am the only one doing research and during the summer, we get a lot of genealogist visit our local history library so when they are here, I need to help them. I'm doing the best I can. But Murray is right. Ask specific questions. You can ask all you want at first, we'll do the best we can. But if you only have one or two and the information is "in-house", we'll get those out immediately. Courthouse searches are done once a week for birth, death, and marriage information. Courthouse land record searches are done once a month (they are very time consuming). Census records are found at our public library and are not indexed so we also do them once a month. Obituaries can be looked up on newspapers but if only the year is given, it will take an eternity to find them. The more specific the better. People who ask others to do research for them, regardless of who is doing it, have to understand that when you find someone who is willing to go all our, others have found the same person as well and are asking for the moon. Well, sometimes we are able to give the moon, sometimes we can't get past the launch site. Also remember too, if you have been doing your own genealogy, you know how time consuming it can be and how it can totally encompass your life. Well, in may cases, for those who can't get to Sauk County to do it themselves, I am doing the same, time consuming job. Only I am doing it for dozens and dozens of people at the same time. Thank you, John and Murray for the votes of confidence. I love my job! I have over 700 family names being researched and cross referenced in Sauk County. My volunteers return in September. I know I will NEVER be caught up but I hope to be closer anyway. Everything I do is genealogy driven. It doesn't help that there are not enough hours in the day. I am also in the process of indexing and cataloging everything in our local history library so we can help researchers quickly as well as possible put things on rootsweb in the future. I am also on a committee that is beginning to redo the out of print Cemetery Inscription books so they will be updated and available. If I was a full time genealogist, I might be quicker with responses. But I am the archivist for the Sauk County Historical Society and genealogy is only one of my hats, my favorite one, but only one. Thanks to all those I have been able to help. Everyone family researched has thoroughly enriched my life and I hope to continue to help others for a long time to come. Families make Sauk County richer, past, present and future.
