Hi Dan & Dee My name is Sheryl Osborn. I am researching the Bull/Mortimer family from Sauk Co., Wisconsin. In the book History of Reedsburg and the Upper Baraboo Valley p. 474-475, in the biographical sketches. Under Mr and Mrs. Wilson Mortimer I found this on the surname Sherman: On Nov. 2, 1889, Wilson married Miss Dell Horton. She was born Feb. 1, 1873, also a native of Woodland. Daughter of Eli Davidson and Ann Eliza (Sherman) Horton. The father was born in Oswego, N. Y., Nov. 27, 1834, son og Gurden and Lucy (Davidson) Horton, and was a lineal descendant of Barnabas Horton, an English immigrant who came to America during the early 1600's. Eli Horton, at an early age, entered the Oneida Community, which was a Shaker Sect, of Oneida Co., N. Y., and there grew to manhood. Leaving that, at the age of nineteen, in 1853, he came to Fort Atkinson, where he married, March 28, 1858, Ann Eliza Sherman. She was born April 7, 1838, in Oswego, N. Y., daughter of Leonard and Anne (Whitford) Sherman. On Aug. 15, 1862. Eli Horton enlisted in the Union Army; was wounded June 10, 1864, at Burnt Hickory, GA.; and mustered out April 8, 1832. Coming to Woodland in 1867, they ever after resided there. He died Feb. 8, 1917; his wife May 3, 1908. There is a Walter Hoyt in the book. Let me know if you would like that info. I have a copy of the 1860 census, but only the Woodland twp. part. There is a: S. Sherman - age 33, farmer, birthplace - NY Ann E. - age 28, birthplace - NY Emma - age 5, birthplace - Wis Frank - age 4, birthplace - Wis Ida - age 1, birthplace - Wis But no Hoyt in the census for Woodland twp. I found a few Sherman's in the Sauk County Cemetery Inscription, Volume #5. I have pages 116-126 on-line and you can view them at http://www.angelfire.com/mo/mortimergen/friendscemetery.html Hope this helps and let me know if I can help you with anything else. Her father is listed as Leonard Sherman. No name for mother listed. According to Annie Haskin Buchanan, their daughter, some of Delia's family made the trip to Nebraska either with Delia and Edwin or followed after, I don't know. Annie states that Delia's brother, Watts Sherman is buried next to his sister. Have been unable to confirm this. He is not listed in the cemetery records. Would anyone have a copy of the 1860 census and could you tell me if the Sherman family is ennumerated in Sauk Co, WI.? I have found other Shermans living in Antelope County but from records I have found, they seem to be from Racine County, WI.
