    3. I agree about the interpretation of the Census. Those who are directly involved with the research personally are more capable of making the interpretation than some outsider. In addition the extraction of the data is more reliable. Those of us who research many of the Censuses find it easier. But there are many times even we have difficulty due to legibility or poor quality of the Census or the microfilm itself. I have found some irritating problems with Censuses that I have researched. Faded and almost impossible or impossible to read. An individual either the Census taker or someone in the Commerce Department involved with the Census project writing ON the Census OVER the names.. generally the head of households. Microfilm being almost blacked out. In most cases impossible to decipher. One such location being Westfield Twp I believe either 1900 or 1910. I wonder who is involved in microfilming the Censuses. And I hope the 1930 Census has been or will be of a high quality on microfilm. 3. Another option for getting census films. I order census microfilms from our local library through the Inter-library loan librarian. Some libraries charge for the service but ours does not. It takes about four weeks to get the film and you have to look at it in the library. For Carol Jo, Although it is harder work and the handwritting is often hard to read (gets better with practice), the original films are better than the transcriptions online. Don't be afraid to get the original films. Your librarian is their to help. Online is faster but you are relying on someone else's interpretation of the handwriting. You, knowing your family names may read the information much different than someone who doesn't. I have seen my Wyatt family name listed as Hiatt on one transcription. A combination of handwriting on the "W" and phonetic spelling on the "y". > -----Original Message----- > From: Terry'n Judy Thompson [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: Monday, March 05, 2001 5:23 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: census > > > Carol Jo - Guess you will have to do it the old fashioned way - go to the > LDS library. 3. I have been pondering why so many of my ancestors came to WI in the middle 1800's to Sauk County, WI too. The Homestead Act began in 1820 but it seems many came right after WI became a state in 1848. Perhaps they advertised in other state papers that the land was excellent for farming and the no cost factor is a winner. I have a relative that came from Ohio and from her sisters 1848 letter it seems that Ohio did not have good soil. Another factor of more movement was that the railroad began in 1850, so travel was much easier. Another thing that I have noticed (with the German side) is that many of them made their decisions on where to go by how the land was "like their own homeland" Marilyn ----- Original Message ----- From: Carol Jo <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 06, 2001 12:32 PM Subject: RE: Sauk county to Iowa > Margaret, > No, I don't know the reason as of yet why this family migrated from Ohio to Sauk County,Wis and then to > Iowa. 3. Carol Jo wrote asking for information about the census in Sauk County. I have no information about the census, but I would just like to share that my family also lived in Sauk County from 1868 to 1870 and then moved to Nebraska and then Iowa. I am still trying to find out why they moved. I think it had to do with employment of course, and I wonder if the railroads were being built inthat location during those years. Do you have any information as to why your family migrated?, Margaret _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

    3. Carol Jo - Guess you will have to do it the old fashioned way - go to the LDS library. The reason there are so few records on the Sauk site is because no one is putting them there. The great records on the Juneau site are the result of many people putting in a lot of work and a great site manager who does more work than anyone else. 3. Thought I'd let folks know that there are a variety of calendars for sale on ebay that come from stores in Sauk City, Prairie du Sac, Spring Green, Loganville and possibly other places in Sauk County. They're mostly from the 1930s and 40s. I bought one from my grandfather's business from this seller, and he was very reliable and accommodating. Hope someone finds something of interest, Kathy Lenerz

The Mabel Rebecca probably refers only to the specific lodge in Baraboo, the Order of the Eastern Star is the actual organization, and is still in existance, tho not a very viable organization. My mother and grandmother belonged. I think it is a shrinking organization in part due to the policy of never asking anyone to join, all members needed to seek membership and couldn't be recruited. Hope this helps. Cheryl

I am asking for information for a friend of mine who's husband, John Burger, was originally a Tulledge, but adopted, probably around 1953, by Wm Burger family. John was b. 25 Jul 1949, in WI, and died at age 30 in 1979, in CA, leaving behind his wife (my friend) and her two sons, now grown men. They would love to find living TULLEDGE relatives. Alvin's father may be George E. (maybe Everett) and Eva L. Grave TULLEDGE. It is possible that Alvin was adopted by these parents, accoring to www.tulledge.net) Alvin's grandparents may be Charles TULLEDGE and Esther LEE. Chas came to US in 1844 to Waukesha, Wi, and moved to Oakfield, WI in 1890. Charles parents are George TULLEDGE and Ann Paser (sp varies Poser, Poster?), from England. Brother to Alvin may be Albert Eugene TULLEDGE. Sisters may be Anna Robersow, Mary Smith and Myrtle Poune. John always knew he was adopted and talked about an older brother, George, a sister, Kathy, and perhaps two more siblings, which may have been adopted out, also. I would be happy to find out who Alvin's wife was, if indeed it is Evelyn. She was informant on Alvin's DC. Thanks so much for your time, Janet E. N.

I have not found a site that will work for every state like the above maps. If you just want to find out where the land is in other states (not the name of the township), I have used TopoZone at: http://www.topozone.com It takes a little (sometimes a lot of) playing around to find the Township markings. They seem to only be at infrequent boundaries (state, where townships don't match up because of fitting a square grid on a round globe, etc.). I pick the name of a geographic place near where I think the land is and use the large map/1:200,000 scale to scan around in (use the arrows at the side of the map) to see if I can find the little red marks with the Township/Range labels. The markings I have found seem to be near state boundaries or along big rivers. Once you have found those, you have to count townships using the couner section markings of 36/34/1/6. I get lost sometimes so have found if I keep a record of a major geographic feature in each section on a scratch paper grid it helps as I scan from map to map back to the area I am interested in. Once there, the 1:50,000 scale grid will show all the section numbers. Very round about and I wish someone would put section/township maps (correlated with USGS maps) up for the whole country! Maybe they have but I have not found them yet. Terra Server at: http://terraserver.microsoft.com/default.asp lets you view satellite images of an area but you have to have a place name. Sue >
