    1. [SAUK] Eugene Haney/Mental Hospital?
    2. L. Duckett
    3. Hi, I am new to this list and I was hoping someone can help me. My great Uncle Eugene Haney who was born in Wisconsin (most likely Grant Co) in Feb 1877 was put into the Wisconsin State Hosp. for the Insane sometime between 1900 and 1920. I just received info from the hosp (now Mendota hospital) that he was released on January 13, 1923 to Sauk Co. (all his records was destroyed in 1988) They did not explain if he was sent to another hosp in Sauk county or he was now on his own. I would like to know if there was a mental hosp in Sauk Co at that time. I am trying to find where and when he died, and Sauk Co is now my last place that he was living. Thank you in advance for any help. Linda

    3. Thanks to the help of several people I have been able to identify the 80 acres purchased by Orison Thomas and his wife Isabella in the 1850s. It is about 1.5 miles as the crow flies east of Cassell on Cassell Prairie, between Spring Green and Sauk City. Now I wonder if someone in the area could take a look at the land shown on this TopoZone map and tell me what they see. In pictures of the farm house there is a hill...not tall...behind it. The land on this map looks as if it would all be under water on a bad day. http://www.topozone.com/print.asp?z=16&n=4788144&e=270021&s=25&size=l The land description is "the West half of the SE quarter of section 36," consisting of 80 acres. Please tell me that it isn't the site of the sewage treatment plant or something. Thank you so much for your help! Carole in Portland, OR

    2. I want to thank Kathy for telling us about the Linkcat website. Once again she has been a marvelous help to my research efforts. Just searching my surnames for that area I found 15 articles about death, marriages and births that I KNOW are my ancestors. From this I am getting at least 4 new dates. Of course there will be tons of other new information! THANK YOU!!!!!!!! Susan

    1. [SAUK] Linus Gilbert, 1860 census
    2. Carole R. Hammond
    3. Mark, In addition to the regular search feature that brings up all sorts of things I also go to the "Search by Record Type" on the bar at the top of the Ancestry page....left side, with the Census Images on the right. Click on the Record Type search and then on Census. When you click on that you can either look for a name in a state or go further down the page and click on the AIS Census Index. There you can search by all sorts of things....names, townships, census years, etc. If you leave the census year blank then it will bring up all of the years including the State census which may be available...or not. I would like to know if Ancestry has the State censuses (censii?) that show up in the index but I haven't gotten around to really doing a search for it yet. I couldn't bring up a Linus Gilbert in WI in any census..... I brought up something like 493 Gilberts in WI by not putting in a year. When I put in 162 (not 164) I did find in the census: L. Gilbert, Lydia and Frank, &, all born in CT and on the next page W. Gilbert, male, age 1, b. WI. Then I tried to see what they had Linus as by doing a search using the page #204 which didn't bring up anything. I found another number on the next page and used that.....601 I think, and Sauk Co.....no last name. This is the page that the baby was on. When I did a search for page 600, Sauk Co., 1860 up popped L. Gilbert. You have to work the search every way that you can think of....including initials and alternate spellings. Good luck, Carole ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mark Echelberger" <[email protected]> > How did you look up the 1860 Sauk Co. WI census in Ancestry?--I must be doing it incorrectly. I have Linus GILBERT and his family in Greenfield Township (image 164), Baraboo Post Office, but I did not find them in an index.

    3. Most of the obits and marriages are catalogued at the Reedsburg Library. Part of the ones are catalogued at the Baraboo Library (hopefully all by the end of summer). In order to look for them, enter http://linkcat.scls.lib.wi.us/linkcatweb/ next, on the left hand side, click on Wisc. Newspapers. Next, Baraboo Newspapers or Reedsburg Newspapers. Enter the last name and you'll get a list of articles for that name available at that library. Each name listed with show the type of article and date of newspaper and page number found. The Reedsburg Public Library address is: 370 Vine Street, Reedsburg, WI 53959. The Baraboo Public Library address is 230 4th Avenue, Baraboo, WI 53913. Always give them the info you found and send an SASE. The cost of the copies is 25 cents each but it might be nice to send a little donation the library and maybe send them a dollar for the copy. Should you have problems, the librarys' web sites are.... http://www.scls.lib.wi.us/reedsburg/index.html http://www.scls.lib.wi.us/baraboo/index.html Reedsburg's e-mail address is listed on their website. Baraboo's is [email protected] Hope this helps. Kathy Waddell

    3. Would anyone know which page numbers Lime Ridge would on, at Ancestory.com 1860 Census? I haven't been able to find my great grandparents and some of their older children. Starting in Dodge Co. and moving over, and then finally finding according to a homestead act land deed, that they bought property in Richland Co. in 1854 and their place of residence is listed as Sauk Co. I'm guessing Lime Ridge, simply because this is where Frances cousins all lived....should of guessed! Anyone help with page numbers? or have access to a 1860 Index for Sauk? Here's who I'm looking for Descendants of David Wilson King 1 David Wilson King 1824 - 1895 . +Frances Ann Frost 1832 - 1908 .... 2 Angline R. King 1851 - 1906 .... 2 Alva F. King 1854 - 1908 .... 2 Charles F. King 1856 - 1929 .... 2 Eva King 1858 - 1858 .... 2 Hiram R. King 1859 - 1861

    3. Lime Ridge should be in Ironton township. The village was incorporated in 1910. On the 1910 census you will only see the township of Ironton listed and not any of the villages. There are only about 26 pages on the whole township which doesn't make it a difficult task to browse through. I did find some of my family in the township of Washington. That may have been because Lime Ridge borders the Ironton-Washington townline. Hope this helps! 3. John, Here's what Ancestry has in their index of Kings in Sauk Co. in the 1860 census. There was also a David King in the 1855 State census but I don't know if that's online or not. It might be that Lime Ridge was a village in the township of another name. I did a search for Lime Ridge in the township field and nothing showed up. It may also be that the family was living somewhere where the head of household wasn't a King. Good luck!
