Thompson Shepard and family lived in Reedsburg, Sauk County, WI from 1848 until 1871. Don Carlos Barry and family lived in Reedsburg, Sauk County, WI during the same time frame (relatives of Thompson Shepard). Both families had many children who would have attended (presumably) the East Reedsburg School. My question -- would there be school records (rosters of classes) . . . or photographs of students that would pertain to the time frame mentioned above? If so . . . can anyone suggest how I could obtain information like this??? Regards, Colleen Boose Hager City, WI

Anybody know anything about the Sandusky School in Reedsburg in the late 1800's? I would love to have a picture of it, if it exists & any history on it. It was in the Cady district (used to be Jones district). Marilyn
Listen to Wisconsin Public Radio at 11:00am Thursday, May 30th. The 1930 census was remarkable for many things, including the first time people were asked if there was a radio in the home. After eleven, Larry Meiller talks with state genealogist Jim Hansen about information made available to family history seekers this spring. You can listen over the internet, http://www.wpr.org/webcasting/ click on 'listen live' or... listen at a later time, at your convenience... you can listen to the program from the archive file. http://www.wpr.org/webcasting/ideas_audioarchives.cfm?Code=mlr
Trying to locate a marriage license for Casper SCHMIDT and first wife, (might be named Elizabeth) in Baraboo, WI about 1853 (+ or -). (Their first child was born in 1854 in WI.) Casper SCHMIDT, b. 3 May 1833, Germany (Prussia). First wife also born in Germany (Prussia). Family could be Lutheran. Thank you! Gloria
The Register of Deeds phone number is correct but they are now at 505 Broadway, Baraboo, WI 53913. They, however, will NOT do a search for you. You have to already know what you want. They do not have the manpower. You either have to hire a title company, an independent researcher to look for you or, ideally, go there yourself (they are there from 8-4:30 but appreciate if researchers are there from 9-4). The Sauk County Historical Society, 531 4th Avenue, Baraboo, WI 53913 (608) 356-1001 also has plat books dating from 1856 to the 1980's. However, they charge $15.00 per hour to do research. The Public Library also has old plat books (230 4th Avenue, Baraboo, WI 53913). Send an SASE for your reply and a donation is welcome for their time and any copies. Their website is: http://www.scls.lib.wi.us/baraboo/index.html Their e-mail address is: [email protected] Kathy Waddell
I believe land records would be kept by the Register of Deeds, Sauk County Courthouse, 515 Oak St. Baraboo, Wi, 53913. Phone 608-356-5581. My Sauk County phone book is now 11 years old. County governments usually have a home page which would give a more current address und/or phone number. Information like the name of the buyer und seller would be most important as well as approximate years of sale. A place like Sauk County Abstract & Title Co, 113 3rd Ave, Baraboo, Wi 53913, phone 608-356-8474 will probably do research like that, for a fee. Land records will give you a legal description like NW corner of 27th section of Blank township, which will most likely mean nothing to you until you see the Plat book. The Historical Society at 565 Water St, Prairie du Sac, Wi 53578 probably has a set of old plat books. I have several photos of unknown Sauk County people in the late 1800's on my Darms genealogy Photo page: http://web.acsalaska.net/~sclover/Sue/GenealogyPages/DarmsPhotos/Darms_Photo s.htm These photos were in an album which I believe belonged to my great-grandmother, Anna Darms, who was born in 1864 in Honey Creek, but moved with her parents and siblings to Napa CA in 1883. I think that most of the pictures were probably friends, however, some may have been from her Uncle Paul Darms family. Neighboring families that seemed to have interaction with the Darms family (spelling of names from a brother's diary) were: SPRECHER, SCHNERLER or SCHNERDER, RICHMILLER, WINDERMANDLE, KELLER, HAGEN, RUCKLEY, HERLEID, BRAFKE, WAGER, HARMERMEISTER, GUHL, NOLD, BICK, and RAGATZ. Please check them out. I would love to identify them. Will be happy to make copies if they are in your line. -Sue Clover
I have gotten my website up with my DARMS family information. This swiss family immigrated to Honey Creek Twp c1849. Surnames related to this family are: TRUEB, RISCHMUELLER, BICK, GEYMAN, EFFMEYER, and SCHLOSSER. I have also followed some other Wisconsin Darms families, one at least with Sauk Co. links. After coming to Sauk Co. c1849, they moved on to LaCrosse Co. Surnames related to this family are: KEHL, ZIMMERMAN, STINTZI, and WHEELER. The link to the page is: http://web.acsalaska.net/~sclover/Sue/GenealogyPages/Surnames.htm I am afraid, at this point, you will have to use the Edit/Find feature on your browser to look for the above surnames. If you are looking for any of the surnames in the first paragraph, you will need to check the pages for subsequent generations (only 3). -Sue
I want to thank those that answered my posting, I have made contact with someone that may be able to help me. Thanks again! Linda

If you happen to be walking rural cemeteries... in the fall... it's common sense to wear blaze orange, for high visibility during hunting season. Southwestern Wisconsin will be having a small area with a concentrated deer "eradication zone" beginning Monday, May 6th. This hunt will continue year round. Rifles will be allowed. Parts of Iowa, Dane and a little of Sauk county will be included. http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/wildlife/whealth/issues/CWD/CWDmngtzone.jpg The agency's plan calls for killing about 15,000 deer in a circular area that extends roughly from north of Mazomanie to south of Highway 18-151 and west from Cross Plains nearly all the way to Spring Green. (from Wisconsin State Journal) http://wisconsinstatejournal.com/local/24757.html The appearance of chronic wasting disease in the deer herd is a crisis and therefore a eradication zone was designated. Please wear blaze orange if you will be within this zone in a rural area. For more information see http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/wildlife/whealth/issues/CWD/index.htm
