    1. [SAUK] library help
    2. Kathy Waddell
    3. This is just a reminder when you ask the libraries for help locating newspaper articles. In Sauk County, the libraries do not charge for research at this time. But they do incur costs when they send things to you. It is 25 cents per copy for each newspaper article they find for you. For those of you who request by mail, an SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) is a godsend to them and should be sent when you make your requests. If you request more than 4 copies, it will cost an additional 23 cents to mail it to you. If fact, for every 4 copies over the first four, you should add 23 cents. If you can't send an SASE, send them enough postage. If you request by e-mail, please be sure to send at least enough to cover copy costs and the cost for postage when you receive your articles. In both cases, a small donation is wonderful. While most requests have been accompanied by money and a return envelope, some are either not thinking, or taking advantage of the library's help. No SASE is included in mail requests or not enough to cover copies and postage. Email requests are fulfilled and no reimbursement money comes back to the library. For those of you who have been generous or have simply paid the costs, thank you. If you are one of those who haven't, shame on you. Genealogy is sometimes not free. And if you can't afford it, as many cannot, then don't ask someone else to foot the bill for you. There are still a ton of free services out there. There are a lot of people working hard to get more information out there to free sites for those who can't afford much. I'll get off my soapbox now.... Kathy Waddell

    3. My husband and I are leaving for Sauk Co next week more for a vacation than research but sure can't pass up the chance when I am there. I am wondering if there are any locals online who could tell me where the best place is to search for Naturalization records in Sauk Co. My Boettchers were there in 1864-1870. I have emailed the Hist Soc but haven't heard back from them as yet. Does anyone know if they are open regular hours? 3. Susan, Can you narrow the field for me. Where were Elihu and Amanda in Sauk Co. There is no index yet on ancestry so knowing the township or town will be a big help. 3. West Baraboo didn't really exist in 1850. It was called Lyons before it was called West Baraboo. 3. Baraboo Town is referring to the township of Baraboo, which may or may not be in the city of Baraboo, although all of the city of Baraboo is within the township of Baraboo. West Baraboo und Baraboo were more separate in 1850 than they are in 2002. I do not know when West Baraboo incorporated, but it is likely that people living in what is now West Baraboo would be in the census as "Town of Baraboo" for quite some time, just as residents of Blackhawk und Witwen would be listed as "Town of Troy". In 1869 Annette married Amos Baron in the "home of her mother in Excelsior." I have little more than this on this family. Can anyone give me some ideas. I have looked at the census for 1870 (Ancestry.com) in Sauk and there are over 600 pages. A bit daunting for a line-by-line search." Thank you to all that helped with my search. Several of you sent me the 1880 census and that was a huge help. I have spent the day on line and found a few newspaper articles about this family, Annette's surname, and her parent's names......possibly more as I sort through what I have found. I have also found a year old post from a 'cousin' sure hope she responds. Thanks again...you are a terrific group of people! Susan

    3. I didn't make it clear that it was Mary Crozier, not her daughter, who was born in Tullyherron, Donaghcloney Parish, Co., Down. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Do you have an Ingram/Ingraham who married either a Crozier or a Kelley in Northern Ireland or anywhere else in the UK around 1800? Martha Ingram Kelley was the daughter of Mary Crozier, daughter of James and Jane Crozier. Mary was born in Tullyherron, Donaghcloney Parish, Co. Down in 1897. Her parents later lived in Hillsborough, Co. Down. Mary Crozier may have been a widow when she married John Kelley (b. Bangor, Co. Down) and they had two children, Martha, b. 1842, perhaps Belfast, and John R. Kelley, b. abt 1845 in Bangor. Mary died in 1847 and John moved with his children and new wife Elizabeth to Sauk Co., WI in 1850. Do any of these people fit into your family anywhere? Carole

    1. [SAUK] Re:MN records
    2. Cheryl Larson
    3. Dear Carole, In response to your request for MN birth indices on the net: they do not exist. They don't even exist for people living in MN, no central place is available to seek out births. The only somewhat reliable way to get them is to visit the county seat and hope they allow people in to do research. Rules are rigorous concerning births that occurred out of wedlock not being available to public scrutiny. If you are seeking a single birth one can go to the department of health, close to the UM campus and purchase it for either $8 or $11, I can't remember which fee. One is not allowed to see it to decide if it's worth a copy prior to getting the copy. No central place exists for marriages either, it's within the counties. On the positive side there is a death index on the net for MN, available thru www.MMHS.ORG They are currently available for approximately 1900-1959. Ones being added right now are giving more info than initially available. The only info listed for the initial years was the dod and the county it occurred in. I am in a sw suburb of Minneapolis: the state histoical bldg. is in St. Paul. I rarely get there but would consider an occasional look up when I do, especially if you've located the date on the index. 3. Orison Byron Thomas, b. 2 Aug 1883, was born somewhere in MN but both of his parents were born in WI. His mother's maiden name was Heinbo. Orison died in Los Angeles Co., CA in 1954. How was this Orison Thomas related to Deacon Orison Thomas of Cassell Prairie, Troy Twp, Sauk Co., WI? His nephew? Is there either a marriage index for WI and MN or a birth index for MN that is available anywhere on the internet? Thanks, Carole

I'd need directions; I don't think that I've been through Loreto before ... at least, if I was, I didn't know it. I'd also like to find the homestead of Henry and Nora Conley (1880's). 3. Hello: I have a copy of St. Luke's Chimes, 1931, which was handed down to me many years ago. There are photos of most, or all, grade levels. I recognize many area names including Kraemer, Grauvogl, Ruhland, and others. Although there is not an index in the back, the book is small enough that I'd be willing to do searches upon request, if anyone is interested. I have a scanner and will scan and forward any photos that you might be interested in. Jodi
