    1. Re: [SAUK] Honey Creek Settlement NOLT and SPRECHER
    2. Thomas Koch
    3. The Nolts I am not familiar with, unless that is a variation of Nold. However, many of the Sprechers, besides marrying many people in the Gasser und Diehl families, are descended from Georg Sprecher und Barbara Tarnutzer. My grandmother's grandmother was named Tarnutzer, so I have much on the Sprechers, although by no means a complete family history. Although Barbara Tarnutzer hails from Schiers just like my ancestors, I have not been able to connect the families. Some more church records from Schiers have been filmed, so I need to get around to looking at them. When I saw them in Switzerland, they were kinda hard to read. Most of my information comes from family histories which were compiled in the 1970s, by people whose names I did not record. I did go through many obituaries in the Baraboo times as well as obtaining information from Wayne Hatz, Mildred Moely, Violet Werla, und other cousins that I looked up, und I should not forget to mention my nearest cousin Zelpha Hooks. Dr. Donald Kindschi has also written two family histories, of the Kindschis und the Yagys. You can find those at the Prairie du Sac library. Many of those family histories also could be found in the Walter Doll room of the library, but the last time I was there, I could not find them. Erhart Mueller has written a history of the Salem Church as well as four books about Sumpter. They were privately published, so I do not know how easy they are to obtain. The Sauk-Prairies Historical Society might still have copies. 2. Tom Krakow
    3. Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any good background resources about the Swiss settlement in Honey Creek, Sauk County? My ancestors, the NOLTs and SPRECHERs came to the area around 1847, from Felsberg, Canton Graubünden, along with quite a few other Swiss from the same area. Has anyone written a history of the settlement? Do church records exist from the settlement? I saw an article once (without references, ugh...), mentioning school records and other information. Does anyone know where this material resides? I have also read the interesting articles detailing the immigration of the Ragatz family and others from Switzerland to America in the late 1840s. This was published by the W.H.S. around 100 years ago. Has anyone seen anything more recently? 1. [SAUK] Dubois families arrived 1850
    2. Helen Graves
    3. I descend from Henry Dubois and his wife Sarah Vandenburg who arrived in Sauk Co. in 1850 with 6 children. They stayed a short while in Baraboo, then settled in Dellona. Traveling in this same party was Henry's brother William Dubois, William's wife, and their children, plus William's brother-in-law Jarvis EIGHMEY, his wife, and Eighmey children. (I need Eighmey family info.) The Dubois and Eighmey families left Washington Co., NY, in May 1850. They traveled by way of the Erie Canal to Buffalo where they boarded a steamer which took them thru the Great Lakes. They landed in Racine, WI, then traveled by horse and wagon to Baraboo. The trip took a total of 17 days. Henry and William Dubois took up land within 1/2 mile from each other; Jarvis Eighmey took up land about 4 miles from them. Both Henry and William Dubois lived out their lives in Sauk Co. (Henry died in 1891). I need info on Jarvis Eighmey and his family. I would like to hear from anyone researching these Dubois or Eighmey families. -- Helen Graves

    3. I am in search of information about an Aunt that very few people in the famil knew much about until a letter was discovered by a cousin a few days ago. This letter has led us to Bariboo. Her name was Edith (ALLEN) KARNES. She was born in Nebraska to Daniel and Rosa GUTZMAN on June 12, 1879. Rosa died just 10 days later. Charles and Lilah ALLEN took Edith to raise as their own. They had two children of their own Whitney? born Apr 1873 and Celotta b. July 1898. It seems that Edith and James KARNES owned a cafe in Bariboo which Edith ran by herself after James' death in 1933. It seems she was fairly well of until she took ill in 1939 and from there the business starting going down hill. She died in a home ran by Korothy Kunzleman (I am not sure of the spelling) and was a member of the Cristian Science church. I would be very interested in any information obout Edith as I am researching the Gutzman family and it does seem that they kept up with each other even until the end. She seemed to have a lot of feelings for this family as in her will she named each brother and sister as well as thier mother. However, by the time she died there were no funds left to distribute. The only other thing mentioned in the letter is the fact that she was once known as the most beautiful woman in Bariboo. Any information on the lady would be greatly appreciated. Would love to have pictures of her and her Cafe. I don't believe she had any children as none were mentioned in the letter. Thanks Jean Gutzman Wallace

    1. [SAUK] Emerson Loomis
    2. Thomas Koch
    3. Since I am subscribed to the Sauk list as well as the Loomis list, I had better answer this post. The best source for pictures is going to be descendents of cousins or siblings of your grandfather. To that end, I did some searching. I could not find either Emerson nor Julia in the 1920 census. I did find Emerson L Loomis 26 in Baraboo township in 1920 with a daughter Mildred born in 1916. I also found Emerson's brother Lorin in Dekorra, Columbia in 1920. He is listed with wife Alice 55, children Lorin A 19, Effie 17, und Percy 11. The SSDI shows Percy born 5 mar 1908 und died jan 1983, last residence at zip 53969. There also is a Lorin born 20 may 1899 und died feb 1967 at zip 53955. My 1991 phone book for Sauk County (the only one I own) shows a Dale Loomis in Baraboo, phone #608-356-6328, und also a Marvin Loomis at 608-356-5722. Have you traced the Porter ancestry back? A lot of Porters are related to the Loomises through the White family. Do you have the name of the wife of Loren Loomis (1747)? 2. Carole R. Hammond
    3. Is there anything locally about an MD by the name of Dr. E. Stella Perrigo who was in the area in the 1890s? She signed the death certificate for Isabella P. Thomas, wife of Orison Thomas of Cassell Prairie. She was also the executrix of Orison Thomas's will. Dr. Perrigo was listed as the aunt of Eugene F. Thomas's daughter Starr in the 1920 census of Pipestone Co., MN. Was she related to the Cadwell family, on Starr's maternal side of the family? Does Dr. E. Stella Perrigo show up as a member of the Sauk Co. Medical Society? Is she in the 1895 County directory and if so, does it give her address? Is there a Perrigo marriage listed in Sauk Co. and if so, what was Stella's maiden name? Thank you! Carole in Oregon

    2. Kevin Frye
    3. Hello veterans and newbies of the rootsweb. There are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. There are Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are 629 prisoners on record from the state of Wisconsin and almost 300 who died here, I thought I would send my offer. I feel the need to say I am not in anyway trying to focus on the horrors of Andersonville compared to any POW camp in the north ..( i.e.Elmira ) or any others and do not wish to stir up arguments on this site. My focus is dedicated to ALL of those held prisoner during this war , on both sides as well as all Americans who gave their freedoms for those that we enjoy today.. I just happen to be near Andersonville so this is where I do my work. I will also do lookups for any solder from any state . Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. Please do not consider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking and will be posted on this county site only once. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask.
