She came here last fall, attended school during the winter, and taught our Primary Department during the summer. She was engaged to teach the same Department the coming year, and was to commence on the day following her untimely death. She was universally loved by the children under her charge, and many were the tears shed by them, when she was borne to her last resting place. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. S. A. WHITCOMB at the Presbyterian Church, and her earthly remains were followed to the grave by the children of our school, and a large number of friends. Sister, thou art gone to rest, And this shall be our prayer. That, when we reach our journey's end, Thy glory we may share. A. E." 3. The 3 story addition was built by Dec. 1945. There was a bond offered as a prize to the first baby born in it. I missed it by 2 days, as I was born on Dec. 17, 1945. In Jan. 1956, by siblings and I would stop at one of the windows and talk to our mom, who had just delivered my younger brother. The hospital was on our way to school. We were glad she was on the first floor. No children in hospitals back then. Kathy Parkinson

    2. Kathy Waddell
    3. St Mary's-Ringling Hospital opened at 10th and Oak in 1922. The original hospital was in the large home of Della Ringling (Alf T.'s wife) which was built in 1898. Della donatedgave her home which was converted to a hospital (the home was razed in 1977). In 1946 a 3-story addition was built. It remained a hospital until 1963 when St. Clare Hospital was opened. The Sisters of St. Mary's continued to be in the former hospital and it was converted to a nursing home, St. Mary's Ringling Manor, for a few years. After the nursing home was closed, it became a convent for the Franciscan Sisters of St. Mary's. In 1997, 75 years after the Sisters of St. Mary's had been in Baraboo serving in the hospitals, the building closed for good. The building still stands empty. (Carol Sorg wrote a booklet on the history of St. Mary's-Ringling in 1997 to commemorate the 75th anniversary. The booklet is at the Sauk County Historical Society. Carol worked there many years.) 2. This gave me a good chuckle today when I was reading some newspaper articles on my family. If anyone knows who this might be, please let me know, as I do have Phelps in my tree. Baraboo News Republic, 24 June 1885, page 4 Original held at the Baraboo Public Library, 230 Fourth Ave., Baraboo, WI 53913 "To my unknown friends-Though I am honored by your apparently kind intentions, nevertheless to save you further trouble and disappointment, I must inform you that I can never solicit or accept the favor of any woman in the present state of my finances and wardrobe. If I am ever able to borrow or steal a few thousand dollars I shall probably turn my thoughts toward matrimony; but certainly not in my present delapidated <sic> condition. N. Phelps" There are many genealogically interesting articles on these pages. Would it be helpful if I transcribed them here? Susan/CA

    1. [SAUK] Jacob W. Elliott
    2. I am looking for a picture of Jacob W. Elliott. He is the son of Giles Columbus Elliott and Elizabeth Wissler, both from IN. He came to Sauk County as a young boy, with his mother and stepfather, Ephraim Bundy, in 1854 and were part of the Quaker church. By Oct. 1857 they were part of the founding members of the Ironton Methodist Circuit. Nov of the same year Jacob Married Olive Sophia Benson. In Dec. 1863 he enlisted into the WI 12th Infantry, Co. B. On July 28th, 1864 Jacob W. Elliott was killed near Atlanta, in the Battle of Ezra Chapel. I am seeking more information on this family. Mostly, I am hoping someone might have a picture of Jacob. Perhaps from one of the churches or in a military picture. I am more than happy to share everything I have on him and his family. Susan/CA
