I received a DC today and was very surprised to find the person died in Madison, Dane Co. But the death was registered in Sauk, which was her residence. I thought deaths were always registered in the county the death occurred. This was in 1941. Can someone clarify? Susan/CA

"Former Baraboo Boy Marries Friends in this city and vicinity have received announcements of the marriage of Werner DINTEMAN, a former Baraboo boy, to Miss Lois MANOCK, of Aurora, Oregon, on December 15, 1940. While living in the Baraboo area Mr. DINTEMAN was a member of Company H, the local National Guards, but since living in Oregon he has joined the regular national army and is now a sergeant in Battery E, 3rd Coast Artillery, Fort Stevens, Oregon. He writes interesting letters about the army service on the west coast. In one letter he writes about the installing of some 12-inch mortars at Fort Canby, Wash., for the coast and the harbor defense. We quote from another letter, "Any one that thinks that the army does not do any work, should come around sometime. It always makes me laugh when some uniformed civilian claims that the army leads a soft life or that the army is for loafers. They should try it. But I really love the military service. It's in my blood, I guess. Our barracks here might not be as up-to-date as at some of the army posts, yet they are as comfortable as could be expected. And the "chow" would be the envy of many people on the outside. We really have some cooks well versed in the ............" Has anyone heard of the Ladies Social Circle of Lyons? loosely from the Baraboo News Republic 1984?: In 1903 the Ladies Social Circle of Lyons was formed in Elvira (Mills) Koon's home with 20 charter members. It remained viable for 80 years. The Circle's focus was on charity, sociability and community improvement. Quilts wer pieced and auctioned or given to the needy, carpet rags and aprons were also made. Frequent ice cream socials were held and Clinton Park was created and maintained by the Circle. Members included Elvira (Mills) Koons, Margret (Koons) Pierce, Cleveland and Howard families -Vicki Pierce at [email protected] __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hello Sauk county researchers! Since the list has suddenly come alive with interest of this newspaper I thought I would mention I am currently in the midst of transcribing the historical and genealogical content of this newspaper for the years 1855-1856 and expect to publish within the next 6 months or less... continuing with the following years in future publications (2 years of news articles per edition). Each article included will be the entire article as it was written, not an extract. This has been a tedious but fascinating project! ALL of the articles are interesting and found it difficult deciding what to include and exclude. I chose to set the criteria to transcribe "only" if it pertained to "local" interest. Later I may publish a separate book of the articles of "out of area" interest such as slavery, foreign affairs, national politics, humor etc. By far the most difficult part of this project is the indexing. The index is of major importance in a research book and I have strived to make this index exceptional :-) Below is a small sampling of the index headings : Area Info: Town descriptions etc. (Really interesting!) Business: Ads by profession/type > see more below Event: Local celebrations, weather related, county fair etc. Legal: Tax sale etc. Marriage: Announcements Misc: For everything else :-) Obituary: Local deaths Personals: Lost/found animals etc. Probate: Probate publishing Railroad: Events relating to the advancement of the railroads School: New construction, meetings, term dates, teachers Surname: Every surname listed in any article Unclaimed: Unclaimed letters held in the Post Office The Business listings has become a sizable section. Not only were the ads of yester-year varied and interesting... they were also very informative! Often giving location, not only by street address but also by their proximity to other businesses which may not have advertised in the paper. They often listed employees, changes in partnership, prior locations, a new owners qualifications, where he resided prior to coming to the area etc., not to mention the prices and fascinating items offered! Thus far I have been able to determine many of the people who owned or worked in/as an: attorney, bank, boarding establishments, court clerk, court deputy, church, dentist, doctor, insurance, judge, justice of the peace, mining, newspaper, notary, photographer, postmaster, product salesperson, real estate sales, saloon, sheriff, store, transportation and so on! While working on this project I have come across a few articles relating to my particular family line which has been wonderful, but more importantly I now have a feel of how my ancestors lived their daily lives, what the various little towns looked like and the topics of interest to the community... not exactly like being there, but pretty close :-) I believe anyone who is researching family in Sauk county will find this book interesting, informative and beneficial to their research. As I stated at the beginning of this post, I plan to publish within the next 6 months. I had hoped to have it available sooner but we are moving to another state (Oregon) this month and this has set me back a bit in my timeframe. I am estimating the book to be about 150+ pages 8½" x 11", but have not yet determined the sales price. I will make an announcement to this list when the book available to ship and the price etc. Wishing you success in your family research :-) Connie Spindel Las Vegas, NV... soon to be in Mill City, OR Researching: Baker, Calkins, Dickerson, Hudson, Logan, Robison/Robinson, Wells, Youngs and related families in Sauk Co., WI 1850's and beyond
Thanks Carolyn, I hope I did it correctly. 1st I unsubscribe by sending an email with just unsubscribe in the body of the email and no subject to the address in step !. 2nd I subscribed again by sending an email with just subscribe in the body of the and no subject to the address in step 2. Let me know because I want to be in the digest mode. I guess I just received a message and I am now in the digest mode. Thanks! Marian :)
Hi Everyone! Boy I was getting alot of email (kickbacks) from a bad address on the list. So I appreciate you folks in List mode receiving more emails than you would like. If you flat deleted the emails, they are all being archived in Rootsweb for future reference. I am subscribed in DIGEST mode to the list. DIGEST mode means that several postings made to WISAUK will be consolidated together and sent to you as a single large message. Currently the DIGEST mode will kick off an email every 18 hours with any activity. I have a size limit rather large on that so you should not receive more than one email in an 18 hour period. With activity like we have had recently I would suggest you resubscribe in that mode. Here are the directions: How to change mail mode (each posting is sent to you as a separate e-mail). There are two steps. 1. How to unsubscribe from ListMode. Send a message to [email protected] that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text. 2. How to subscribe to DigestMode. Also, for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" (in the body of the message) to [email protected] 3. There is no formal NOMAIL mode (Vacations etc.). All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. If anyone needs help, just let me know, I will set you up. We currently have 38 folks registered in DIGEST mode and 118 in LIST mode. Carolyn
Thanks Janet, I will check into the digest version. I just post my query & signed into the Sauk County mailing list in June of this year. After you mention the digest version of the mailing list, I remembered at a genealogy workshop they recommended this version of the mailing list. I will see if I can change to the digest version. This will be better suited to my life style. Thanks again. Please continue sharing information from the newspaper and any other sources with named individuals. There may be clues to our searches that could be missed otherwise. PS -- I'm watching for Steinhorsts, Winters, and Schultes and Eickerts. -------------- Christine Grosz Olsen [email protected]
Hi everyone, If I use the delete key on every on every message of this kind, I defeat the purpose of being on this list in the first place. If everyone that went to a library posted everything they had seen on every surname in the paper we would be receiving thousands of email a day. I think it is nice if they are cute like the first one that talked about this fellow not being able to afford a wife. Receiving emails such as this is very handy if someone has run into a brick wall and the rest of us could be of some assistance. This is why I signed on to this kind of thing in the first. Working people don't have time for this kind of thing. I don't want to be to negative, but think about this and how immense this could become.
