The Richland Cty. Asylum and later called also the poor house was built around 1896. It was torn down in 1963 and the Pine Valley Manor was established at the site. Never heard it called the Alms House. ----- Original Message ----- From: "lalvord" <lalvord@msn.com> To: <WIRICHLA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 02, 2002 9:14 PM Subject: [WIRICHLA] Alms house in 1901 > I recently obtained a death certificate for a relative and discovered that he died at the Alms House in Richland Co in 1901. I assume that the Alms house was another name for the poor house. Is that correct? He had a wife and children and had had a least a farm, so I was surpised to learn that he had died at the Alms house. Does anyone have any information on the Alms House? Could it by any chance have functioned as a nursing home does today for those who are chronically ill and their families are unable to care for them. I would appreciate any information relating to the Alms house. > > Thanks, > Lynne > > > ==== WIRICHLA Mailing List ==== > Search the list archives: > http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl - put WIRICHLA for > the name of the list >
Thank you so much for answering so quickly regarding the Alms house. This must be quite an active list as I got replies from 2 people in less than 24 hours. Impressive. It appears that the Alms house was the poor farm and is the same place/location as the Pine Valley Manor/Health Center today. His death certificate says he died of paralysis and old age (77) duration 2 months and so I wonder if possibly he had had a stroke and his family was unable to care for him and they put him in the Alms House. I know he had a bought a farm earlier, of course he could have lost it and become destitute in his old age. It appears that his wife was still living when he died and I know he had 3 daughters. It just seems odd that he was in the poor farm. Of course maybe his wife left him or something of that sort. I don't imagine I will find a probate or will record for him since he died in the poor farm. Again thanks so much, Lynne
I do not know what date it was , but the Richland Observor in the last few years run an article about this facility. The person did not have to be poor to be put in the home run by the county or whatever. my husbands g grandfather was there and he was not poor. He had a stroke and today you would call it alshiemers disease . Perhaps you could find his family in the census and then look up the newspapers for a local column . They tell you a lot about existing family Good Luck ----- Original Message ----- From: "lalvord" <lalvord@msn.com> To: <WIRICHLA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 03, 2002 9:45 PM Subject: Re: [WIRICHLA] Alms house in 1901 > Thank you so much for answering so quickly regarding the Alms house.
