He was appointed on the 14th day of September, 1891 by John Wanamaker, Postmaster General of the United States of America. The document reads "Now know ye, that confiding in the integrity ability, and punctuality of the said William Murphy I do commission him a Postmaster, authorized to execute the duties of that office at Palmoral aforesaid, according to the laws of the United States and the Regulations of the Post Office Department: To hold the said Office of Postmaster, with all the powers, privileges and emoluments to the same belonging, during the pleasure of the Postmaster General of the United States." It states "In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the Post Office Department to be affixed, at Washington City, this twentysecond day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety one, and of the Independence of the United States the one hundred and sixteenth." It is signed by John Wanamaker and has the gold seal of the "Post Office Department United States of America". It has been folded in half down the middle of the document length wise. It has some water spots and shows normal aging. It measures approximately 17" by 22" and has a couple of small tears on the bottom of the document. * * * * * I should be so lucky as to find my ancestor's documents floating around on e-bay some day :-) John C.
