    1. RE: [WIRICHLA] MERRILL of Richland County, Wisconsin
    2. John Wright
    3. Karla: I don't know if the following information pertains to your Merrills or not. If you are not already informed on the following,it may offer some leads. Merrills listed in 1855 State Census for Richland County (see footnote) Head of Household Males Females Township Page in 1884 History Book* William R .Merrill 1 1 Forrest 1261 Thomas A. Merrill 3 1 Forrest 1261 Mathias Merrill 6 6 Forrest 1261,1263 Henry & Eliza Merrill 2 1 Marshall 1124 James Merrill 4 4 Richmond Not listed None of the above are listed in the 1850 Federal Census and none of the Heads of Households are recorded in the referenced book as serving in civil war. The reference states, pages 1124, 1125: Henry Merrill, a pioneer settler of Fancy Creek Valley, was born in Stark Co., Ohio, March 5, 1826. When he was five years old, his parents moved to Carroll County. His father, there purchased timber land and cleared a farm, in which the subject of this sketch assisted him. Taking advantage of the oppportunities then offered, he received a fair education. He was married Aug. 25, 1847, to Eliza McNelly. She was born in Lancaster Co., Penn., Feb. 23, 1824. He bought land in Carroll County and remained there until 1855, when he settled on his present farm in Richland County. In coming here he traveled by rail as far as Warren, Ill., which was then the nearest railroad station. There he hired a horse and sled and copmpleted the journey. He first built a rude cabin of round logs, covered it with "shakes" and made puncheon for the floor. This humble abode was his home untill 1866, when he erected the frame house he now occupies. Mrs. Mmerrill was one of the first members of the Presbyterian church. Mr. Merrill, though not a member of the church, lends willing aid, and was one of the committee in charge of building the new church. Henry McNelly, a nephew of Mrs. Merrill, was reared by her, she having had charge of him from the tender age of eleven months. He was married in 1875 to Salina, daughter of William and Mary (Thompson) Francis. They have two children - Lester Everett and Francis Clark. 1. [WIRICHLA] CDs for the History Room
    2. Lori
    3. If anyone is looking for a way to help people do research in Richland County and help the History Room at the Brewer Library in Richland Center, WI, here is a suggestion: Someone has just donated a computer to the History Room and it could be used for doing research on CDs. Right now Heritage Quest http://www.heritagequest.com/ is having a sale on their CDs (sale ends October 31st) and the History Room would like to have a set of the census CDs or any other CDs. If anyone would like to donate a CD that they already have or if you wish to donate money so that these CDs can be purchased, please contact Sandy at the History Room at (608) 647-6444 (9-4:15 Mon., Wed., or Fri.) or email: RICHLANDCTYHISTORYROOM@YAHOO.COM

    1. [WIRICHLA] Crandell ceremony
    2. Cynthia J. McCarthy, SFO
    3. Mr. Crandell: I was in attendance (from northern Minnesota) at the ceremony for your ancestors as a member of ARCH as well as my 3 year old son, who enjoyed it greatly. Perhaps the local history room at Brewer Library might be a good repository for copies of your video for future generations to enjoy? I was going to speak to you that day, but the rain made it impossible to wait.... The newspaper mentioned that it was not known which battles your ancestors fought in. Have you sent for their service records or pension papers? Also the regimental histories at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in Madison may be of some help. We also found the Series 2200 documents at SHSW a great help for Civil War research. Although they may not leave the premises or be photocopied, the actual records are available for research (I believe on the 3rd floor archives room?). These included daily muster rolls, court martial records, hospital records, payroll, acoutrements taken....you name it. It was interesting to note (for us) that one person who later served in RC as GAR post commander (and has no living descendants, lest you think I'm tattling) had been court martialed, fined, and left with his musket and acoutrements without paying for them!! It is difficult and time consuming to research these, especially with no photocopying, but well worth the few weeks it took us. Even though the regimental histories gave the lists of battles of each unit, it was amazing how many soldiers were "out" for many of these, in the hospital with some illness. So we were able to determine nearly a day-by-day record for our ancestors by examining these records. One other resource for you might be the State Veteran's Museum near the capitol in Madison. They had many books for sale on researching WI vets in the Civil War. Incidentally, I was delivered at RC Hospital in 1959 by a Dr. Crandall! Hope you enjoyed your Richland County stay!
