I am a descendant of the RATH and DEMMER families of Richland County. I have heard that my great, great grandfather, John Carl RATH, who immigrated from Mecklinberg-Schwerin Germany in 1871, made the comment during WWI that with one hand he sent money to Germany and with the other hand bullets. I can only try to imagine the distress that the German immigrants must have felt during that time. I have recently been reading about the Executive Order that President Roosevelt initiated in Feb 1942 which authorized the U.S. War Department to exclude or relocate people from certain areas of the country. The ruling was aimed at not-yet-naturalized emigrants from countries fighting against the US during WWII as well as American-born citizens of "alien ancestry". Surely a large percentage of the population of Richland County during this time would have qualified as being of "alien ancestry" - I know that my great grandfather, William Henry RATH, would have been included in this category. I would like to hear any stories about life for the German descendants in Richland County during World War II. Was the Ash Creek Church allowed to continue having services in German? Was there much discrimination against the residents of the county who were of German descent? Were the traditions of our German ancestry stifled during this period? Any of your personal comments or information on where I could locate published articles related to these questions would be appreciated. Rosemary Tiwari Coralville, Iowa retiwari@home.com

Let me try that again: List mode means you get a copy of each email posted to the list as an individual note. Digest mode means that a number of messages are combined and sent out at periodic intervals to people who are subscribed in that mode. The periodic level is determined by the list activity and/or the size of messages. If the digest size limit is reached first then a digest is put together by the server and sent out. If the time limit is reached first then a digest is put together by the server and sent out. Current limits are: 18 hours or 32K worth of messages. The plus side of Digest is that you get one email versus several individual pieces. The downside, at least for me, is that you get a big email and if you decide to reply to an individual message in the digest you end up having to either copy and paste a reply or chop out a big chunk of the digest message - plus you end up without a good subject line, unless you decide to change it. Current message size limit for an individual message to the list is 20K. As to the lateness of a reply, it's not. I recently found a message, an offer for contributing cemetery listings in another county that I'd received 50 weeks before. It got lost in my mailboxes and I stumbled across it. The good thing was that the gentleman and I corresponded and he and I are burning the wires sending/receiving and putting the cemeteries online. The downside for me is that my inbox has swelled, even with sorting to over 1 Gig of email and the last count some months back was over 200,000 emails, very easy to miss one individual email. Luckily though the spam is mostly filtered out now and I'm not receiving at the rate I used to. I'm down to only about 150 new messages a day. For Tim - There was a family of Rolette's living in Westford township of Richland County, section 2. I know some of them are buried in St. Anthony's cemetary at Germantown. The farm has pretty well been abandoned the last time I was by it. I was in touch some years ago with a Mr. Rolette who lived near Beloit/Rockford area I believe. Our land we owned back in the 1980's joined theirs. Sandy Stiemke scrary@jvlnet.com

I recently received the following. If someone can assist, please contact me. Thanks, Tim --------------- I am a french girl interested in the history of my village. Some people of my village settled in Wisconsin (Richland County). They are quoted in the chapter "Biographical". Their names are Jules François (1838-1916) and his uncle Jean-Baptiste Poinsot (1810-1875) who first settled in 1854 ; then came Claude François (1813-1889 buried in Loyd) and his wife Catherine who arrived in 1855 with their children (Claude called Francis (1843-1883), Séraphine 1845-1941), Charles, Louis and Marie) and a young boy Anton Rollet (born in 1835) whose parents crossed the Atlantic in 1856 (Pierre-Joseph Rollet (born in 1809) and his wife Barbe or Barbara Ruston). I would like to collect information about these people and their conditions of settling in the states and possibly get in contact with their descendants. Could you please help me ? Do you know a genealogical association I can get in touch with ? The place where all this people came from is called Guyonvelle a village in the Champagne area.

Hi to all, As some of you know, I am working on a new project. Last month I was able to place the 1874 Richland County (16 Townships) Plat Maps online. For those that are new to genealogy research, a Plat Map is an effort to place the land owners names to the parcels of land they owned and print it out in map form. This is a great tool for tracking your ancestors movements. As of this morning, I was able to complete the 1895 Richland County Plat Maps. It was my intention to keep these images as small as possible for quick loading, but to see the detail of each section of land, each image is rather large. Please be patient as they load. Some computers are slower than others and browsers may be out dated as well. Hang in there, the wait is worth it. My next effort will be to add the 1919 Plat Maps. To go to the plat map entry page please click on the link below. <A HREF="http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~djnsl/RichlandCemeteryLocator.html"> Richland County Plat Maps</A> http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~djnsl/RichlandCemeteryLocator.html Thanks and enjoy, Dennis
I am related to an Esther Cooper. I know that there was at least one Cooper family in the area around the time you are mentioning. You should contact the History room at the Brewer Library in Richland Center. They have great files on the various families. I will keep the name in my notes and be sure to let you if I come across anything. Good luck.
