I have one thing that I have been looking for for about 6 years and that is the names of my ggggrandparents. I know that my gggrandfather Abraham Moody died in Richland Co. on October 18, 1895. He was born January 14, 1818 in Columbiana Co, Ohio. He married Melissa Ann Shafer there November 18, 1852 and had three children there. They all moved to Richland Co. in 1862 along with Melissa's parents and some of their 10 or more children. Abraham and Melissa lived around Bloom and there is a record of where they are buried, I think it's Pine River Cemetery. Melissa died October 02, 1900. She was living with her son George Scott in Richland Center at the time. George was the owner and editor of the "Richland Rustic" for a time. I have seen and have a copy of Melissa's obituary and a copy of the death cert. for Abraham. I haven't found an obit for him. So far I have found no mention of his parents and so I am stuck. The only thing that I need to know at this point is the names of his parents or one of them at least. I need to get beyond him. Do you think that you might help? There may be an obituary for him there but I haven't found one yet and I am in California so most of what I have learned has been through the Internet. Larry

Oddly enough, Chapter 21 - Town of Orion - from the 1906 history of Richland County is now online. I did a double take on that one since it is the same chapter number as reported for Crawford County last night - just a different county and book! Anyway, the chapter can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wirichla/1906-21.htm Additionally several bios are currently in the process of being transcribed as indicated on the page dedicated to them. Tim
After a good hiatus - Chapter 21 - Pioneer Reminiscences from the History of Crawford County is now online: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wicrawfo/chap21.htm This consists of several narratives the main one by Mr. Fonda, who for a better part of his working life was a lawman in one capacity or other. His portion is quite interesting as he speaks of trekking to deliver the mail from Green Bay to Chicago, on foot, in the winter. Included are his descriptions of both Green Bay and Chicago as they appeared in that day (1830s) and various adventures that he and his companion met along their way. All in all a good read. Now off to work on another chapter. Tim
Thank you so much for answering so quickly regarding the Alms house. This must be quite an active list as I got replies from 2 people in less than 24 hours. Impressive. It appears that the Alms house was the poor farm and is the same place/location as the Pine Valley Manor/Health Center today. His death certificate says he died of paralysis and old age (77) duration 2 months and so I wonder if possibly he had had a stroke and his family was unable to care for him and they put him in the Alms House. I know he had a bought a farm earlier, of course he could have lost it and become destitute in his old age. It appears that his wife was still living when he died and I know he had 3 daughters. It just seems odd that he was in the poor farm. Of course maybe his wife left him or something of that sort. I don't imagine I will find a probate or will record for him since he died in the poor farm. Again thanks so much, Lynne
The Richland Cty. Asylum and later called also the poor house was built around 1896. It was torn down in 1963 and the Pine Valley Manor was established at the site. Never heard it called the Alms House. ----- Original Message ----- From: "lalvord" <lalvord@msn.com> To: <WIRICHLA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 02, 2002 9:14 PM Subject: [WIRICHLA] Alms house in 1901 > I recently obtained a death certificate for a relative and discovered that he died at the Alms House in Richland Co in 1901. Hi Lynne, It appears that the Bailey House bulit in 1873 was to be become the Richland Hospital in the future. In 1901,E.P. Kermont opened a hospital in his home on Central Avenue in Richland Center. It was called the City Hospital in 1901. Wondering if the Alms House was also a private home functioning as a hospital also. If memory serves correct there was also a Mueller Nursing Home in R.C. in the 30's and 40's. It served as a hospital sort also.As women gave birth there also. Lynne, I was told by an uncle, who is in his nineties, that the original poor house for Richland Cty. stood near Spring Hill Cemetery. I heard of this about three years ago. I don't know the name but I was under the impression that the house there was for Civil War veterans and their children. Let me do some checking on this . I do not know what date it was , but the Richland Observor in the last few years run an article about this facility. The person did not have to be poor to be put in the home run by the county or whatever. my husbands g grandfather was there and he was not poor. He had a stroke and today you would call it alshiemers disease . Perhaps you could find his family in the census and then look up the newspapers for a local column . They tell you a lot about existing family Good Luck ----- Original Message ----- From: "lalvord" <lalvord@msn.com> To: <WIRICHLA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 03, 2002 9:45 PM Subject: Re: [WIRICHLA] Alms house in 1901 > Thank you so much for answering so quickly regarding the Alms house. I recently obtained a death certificate for a relative and discovered that he died at the Alms House in Richland Co in 1901. I assume that the Alms house was another name for the poor house. Scott and Linnea, I'm using Netscape 4.75 to view the census images on Ancestry.com with no problems. I had trouble when I "upgraded" to Netscape 6.2, but I had a lot of other problems with it and eventually went back to 4.75. I'm on a PC with Win98. I wouldn't give up the security of Netscape without a fight! I've been active on the internet for many years and have NEVER had a virus. (Knock on wood!) I have to use IE at work and we have lots of problems with viruses (viri?) I have a hard time believing Ancestry.com would knowingly make itself unusable to Mac and/or Netscape users. I'd give them a call. Thanks to everyone who responded to my post about problems with the Ancestry.com census subscription. Some of you were also having problems, but they seemed to be of a different nature. I tried accessing it from my computer at work, so it isn't my router or cable modem (unless it is a problem with those brands of equipment, since I have the same models at home as at work). So let me rephrase that -- is anyone else on the list, using a Macintosh. having problems? I'm thinking it may be a Mac compatibility problem. (At some point over the past week, I ran into a recommendation to Ancestry users that they use the latest version of Internet Explorer, 6.0 -- which is available only in a Windows version. So perhaps they upgraded Mac users out of existence. The alternative is a problem with my ISP. I didn't have time to call their support line today -- and I suppose it would be just too much of a coincidence for somebody on this list to be on triwest.net, or airstreamcomm. Scott

Phyl in Reno - I do not have a subscription, of course, just accessing the free portions. But, the consensus of those who responded to my Yahoo genealogy post was that Ancestry was having problems. I would trust they have solved them by this time, but I am not taking any chances myself, will not go into Ancestry directly for a while. Last week, everytime I went to www.ancestry.com I got into the site but could not go to any links, and after that I could not go anywhere else on the entire World Wide Web. Only happened when I went to their site, not when I went to any other site first. I would turn off machine, sometimes would be ok on restart, sometimes not. When it entirely locked up after one time going to Ancestry, my ISP Support found some glitch in my connection to them, I had to disconnect from them, and reconnect. This glitch was not there before I started having the Ancestry problems (I use the free portions a lot). Maybe they have corrected it, maybe not????
