Empey having died 13 July 1896 in Portage Co. (I notice, too, on his Civil War Pension record online, that his death benefits were applied for 31 July 1896 by his widow Mary J. -- So he married again after Julia Priest). His obituary will have good info on where he was born, I'm sure. Since you have the death date, you might want to post a message asking if anyone has access to obituaries. (Otherwise, the Stevens Point area newspaper/s would). There were Empeys in NY even back in 1810, according to census lists.
