R/S MAK http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiportag +++++ I have recently received a reply to a posting on the Portgage message board which I placed in 2002. The author was John Pitcher and he has suggested that I should email you as he feels sure you will be able to find me some info on the WOOLSTON and SCOTT families in Plover. Here's what I have:- 1880 Census for Plover, Portage William WOOLSTON - Carpenter/Joiner - age 35 - b. England; Jennie (Jane Ellen) WOOLSTON - wife - age 26 - b. Scotland; Children: Jane (Elizabeth Jane) WOOLSTON - age 7; James Scott (William James) WOOLSTON - age 5; Mary E (Mary Ellen) WOOLSTON - age 4; Lucy (Louisa) WOOLSTON - age 2; and John (John Robert) WOOLSTON - age 3m. (All children are shown as born in Scotland but John was born in Stamford, Lincs, England). (I have the certificates for all births.) Robert and Mary MAINS were also in the same household. Mary MAINS was the mother of Jane Ellen WOOLSTON and Mary SCOTT, Robert being her second husband. Also next to them on the census: James SCOTT - dealer in real estate - age 61 and his wife, Mary SCOTT - age 35, both born Scotland. Now, John Pitcher discovered in the Plover Times of Thurs. July 18, 1872, a notice of arrival of Mr and Mrs Woolston on 11th July 1972, together with a death notice for their baby daughter on the same day, only hours after arrival in Plover and he very kindly posted this information on the message board for me. So, it would seem that they did not stay long in Plover in 1872, returning home to Scotland where they had their subsequent children, and then visiting William's family in Stamford, Lincs where their son John was born, prior to returning to Plover to begin a new life in 1880. This is all I have on this family. A couple of years ago, I employed an American researcher to search for the family but she could not come up with anything on the census returns etc. and suggested that they may have left the USA for Canada. The only information I had on William WOOLSTON was from a family bible which stated that he went to America. I was really excited when I turned them up on the American 1880 census and from that information, was able to discover the marriage and births of their children in Scotland. I would really like to find out what happened to them. Mary Jane was obviously buried in Plover but as for the rest, I have no idea. If you are able to offer any advice or avenues of further research, I would be really grateful. Message boards really do work and this small piece of information received from John has put a whole new prospective on things. Hope I have not overwhelmed you with information but thought it best to put everything I know. With many thanks for your time in reading this. With best wishes - Janice Hawkins (Dorset, England)
