Surnames: Omernik, Simonski, Wojak Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DFC.2ACE/2238.4 Message Board Post: Source - St Point Journal dtd 30 Jan 1909 Was 96 years old - One of the oldest residents of the county passes away - In the person of Albert Joseph Omernik, one of the first Polish settlers of Portage County, and in years, perhaps the oldest resident of the county, has laid down life's burdens. Mr Omernik died in his home in Polonia between 7 and 8 o'clock Wednesday evening. Deceased was born in Russia - Poland and at the time of his death was in the 96 year of his age. He came to America in 1858 and after spending seven years in Canada came to this county and was one of the pioneer Polish settlers to establish a home in the town of Sharon. He settled on a farm north of Polonia but being a carpenter by trade, he built many of the houses in that town. For the last thirty years he had lived in comparative retirement with his wife, now aged 88, at their home at Polonia. He never used intoxicats or tobacco and until his fatal illness of about four weeks has always enjoyed good health. He is survived by his widow and eight children, as follows: Anthony Omernik, Gaslin, WI; Mrs Anthony Wojak, of Sharon; Mrs John Simonski, Stevens Point; Frank Omernik, Sharon; Nick Omernik, Custer; J J Omernik, Polonia; and Sister Antonia of Chicago and Sister Alozsia of Bronson, MI.
