    1. Re: g-grandma's unusual floor
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Graczykowski, Graykowski, Kluczykowski, Kluck, Ciesielski Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DFC.2ACE/1820.1 Message Board Post: Hi, The type of floor you describe would have been highly unusual for rural Portage County. If it does/did exist, it would probably be found in one of the larger farm homes. I have never seen this type of craftsmanship in the northern part of the County. This type of workmanship would likely be found in Stevens Point, or perhaps in one of the homes established by "yankee" settlers (southern part of the County). These settlers tended to construct more modern buildings, while the Poles/Norwegians (whom had little resources) built log homes or "basic" frame houses (i.e pine flooring). A floor such as the one described would be viewed as excessive ("showing off") in a Norwegian home, and a waste of money/time in a Polish home. Did your ancestors originate from New York State? If so, I would try researching the Townships of Belmont or Buena Vista (others?). Check the local directories and plat maps. If you can narrow down the township, you might be able to piece together an exact loc! ation for this home. Be warned though, Portage County does not have a tract index! (In this day and age you think they would!) Because of this, it can take many hours to find a particular parcel. Good luck!
