Surnames: Barwick, Jacobson, Maslowski, Sonju, Lund, Tanner, Miller Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DFC.2ACE/2.385.1.3.3 Message Board Post: The St Point Journal 12 Mar 1898 - May not be Barwick - The Ashland County Officials are in doubt The Ashland Press of a recent date contained the following in regard to Antoine Barwick, formerly of this city: For a time last night it looked as if Officer Maslowski had captured the man who killed Peter Jacobson. One Antonie Barwick, whom Maslowski knew, closely resembled the man seen near Nash after the murder and was held on suspicion. This morning Barwick was subjected to the sweat box process, at the conclusion of which the officers were convinced that they had the man seen near Nash after the murder.l Barwick says he went as far as Fish Creek, Friday afternoon, where he had some trouble over a pail, and returned to Ashland. The next morning (the morning on which the muder was committee) he admits going to Washborn from Ashland. He also admits being in the depot at Washburn where the suspected man was seen at 9:30, but says it was about noon. The tramp that killed Mr Jacobson boiled some coffee in the barn where the tragedy occurred, and some coffee, tea, doughnuts, butter, and other eatables where found in Barwick's pocket. So closely did the description tally that the officers were posibitve that they had the right man, until the boy who met the murderer face to face near Nash as he was escaping arrived. This boy was taken into the city lock-up where Barwick was confined, but he gave it as his opinion that he was the wrong man. Sheriff Sonju took Barwick to Washburn for further identification. The chief of police, of Washburn says Barwick was arrested there and locked up as a suspect, but was turned loose while he and Under-sheriff Lund were searching the camps. He told the Washburn officers that his name was John Miller. Chief Tanner turned over his belongings, consisting of a razor, police star, part of a package of coffee, bag of teas, knife and a number of other articles. +++++ On-line sources to check: Stevens Point Area Obituary Index http://library.uwsp.edu/Obits Cemetery records at: http://library.uwsp.edu/cemetery/ Census records at: http://library.uwsp.edu/census/ Portage County Historical Society http://www.pchswi.org/index.htm Portage County Courthouse: http://www.co.portage.wi.us/ UW-St Point Archives http://library.uwsp.edu/depts/gen/genealog.htm#ARCHIVES Recent obits can be obtained from WI Newpapers On-line - http://www.wisinfo.com/ I am not related to nor have any additional information on these surnames.
