Parks William R. Parks, 80, a former Stevens Point resident, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Don and Marilyn HospiceCare Center in Madison. Mr. Parks was born Nov. 18, 1923, in Phillips, a son of the late William B. and Mabel G. Parks. The Parks family moved to Waukesha and then to Stevens Point. He attended Campus School through eighth grade. He graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1941. He then attended Central State Teachers College, where he was a member of Phi Sigma Epsilon social fraternity. In June 1943, he entered the U.S. Navy and attended Officer Candidate School at Lawrence University in Appleton and Pre-Midshipmen's School at Asbury Park, N.J. On Aug. 10, 1944, Bill graduated from Midshipmen's School at Columbia University in New York City. Bill served on the USS Rankin (AKA 103) and participated in the invasion of Okinawa and the occupation of Nagoya, Japan. After the service, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He received a bachelor's degree in 1947 and a master's degree in 1954. He taught in public high schools in Port Edwards, Oshkosh, Waukesha and, since 1953, Madison East High School. He retired in June 1985 after 37 years of teaching. He was a member of the Madison and Wisconsin Retired Teacher's Associations, American Association of Retired Persons, and the American Legion. Survivors include cousins, Richard Turzenski, Shirley Turzenski, Mary Lou (Thomas) Marchel and Donald Hoerter.
