Rev H. Mueller of Almond officiated at the funeral and conducted burial rites on the Almond cemetery. Hymns were sung by a mixed quartet. The pallbearers were Jacob Mahne, Emil Mahne, Herman Kleist, Theodore Kleist, Joseph Buelow and Andrew Lutz. Flowers were carried by Mrs. Lutz and Mrs Buelow. Mr. Schmidt was 77 years of age. He was born in Germany, where he spent his early life and where his marriage took place. After coming to Wisconsin, the couple made their home in the town of Almond. They were parents of six children, of whom four survive. A daughter died in Germany and a daughter, Mrs John Persike, died in 1907. Surviving are two sons and two daughters, Mrs Emil Mahn of Wausau, Mrs George Warning and Albert Schmidt of Almond and Henry Schmidt of Manawa; two brothers, Fred Schmidt of Bloomfield and Charles Schmidt of Oshkosh, and a sister in Germany and several grandchildren.

In 1880, the Felician Sisters' mother-house, Saint Claire Convent, had become too small for the growing community in Polonia. In 1882 the mother-house was moved to Detroit, MI and the old convent was then turned into an orphanage for homeless boys conducted by the sisters. In 1914 the orphanage burned to the ground, leaving the orphans and the Felician Sisters temporarily shelterless. It was rebuilt a year later. There are three pictures related to the orphanage in "100th Anniversary: Sacred Heart Congregation Polonia, Wisconsin" . The sisters discontinued the orphange in the 1920s making it a home for their own aged Sisters. LuAnn
