Posted on: Portage County WI Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/Portage/955 Surname: GIESE, PRATT ------------------------- For my free lookups, I had only asked that you provide given names and, when possible, location of where they lived. This is for three reasons, 1) Others searching for that person know to contact you with information, 2) the person doing the lookup can narrow the search and limit the time they spend looking for your FREE data, and 3) Avoid people who waste my time by sending random requests for surnames but have no idea if they even lived there or not... As there is only one PRATT and one GIESE, I will list the information for you. In the future, when you ask for a lookup, please be curteous and provide given names if you expect a lookup. From Land and Lumber: pg 98 - The city also had a full compliment of speciality shops... Frederick GIESE, tailor ... pg 98 - The service professioanal sector included job titles familiar in the 1990s:... optician Roscoe PRATT... I am not related to nor have any additional information on these surnames. R/S MAK

Posted on: PortageCoWI Obits Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/PortageObits/893 Surname: HOLLIDAY, SIMPSON ------------------------- Thomas M SIMPSON Obit printed in the Gazette (Stevens Point WI), February 10, 1920, Page 1 and the Stevens Point Daily Journal, Friday, February 13, 1920, Page 2 Thomas M SIMPSON, aged 28 years, a son of Mr and Mrs William SIMPSON, 402 North Division Street, died suddenly at the family home Saturday afternoon after an illness of less than two days' duration during which time he had not been confined to his bed. Heart trouble is believed to have been the cause of his death. The young man was in the employ of J Peickert's Sons leather store at 116 North Third Street and first complained of not feeling well after going to work Friday morning. He was then suffering from slight pains near his heart. He left the Peickert store at 9 o'clock Friday morning and returned to his parents' home, remaining about the house during the day. On Friday evening he attended the River Falls Stevens Point Normal basketball game at the Normal gymnasium, walking the distance of several blocks from his home to the Normal and returning to his home directly at the close of the game. On Saturday morning Mr SIMPSON dressed but remained about the house, still experiencing the pains which he had been afflicted the day before. His condition was not considered serious either by himself or members of his family, however, and a physician was not summoned. At 2:30 Saturday afternoon he walked to an outside toilet at the rear of the SIMPSON residence and his lifeless body was found there a few minutes later by a member of the family. Neighbors removed the body to the house and a physician was called, who observed at once that the young man was dead. While the deceased was compelled to leave his work at the Peickert store on Friday morning, he experienced a slight cough on Thursday. This was not considered serious, however, and did not prevent him from continuing his work that day. Whether his illness the following day was the outgrowth of the slight cold and caused influenza which settled in the heart is not known. The deceased was known by his many friends in this city as "Tom" SIMPSON and has resided in Stevens Point practically all his life. He was born here on August 20, 1891, and when a boy attended St. Stephen's parochial school. The late Mr SIMPSON had been employed at the Peickert establishment in this city for about six years prior to two years ago, when he went to Milwaukee and was employed there for a year. He returned to Stevens Point in the spring of 1917 to enlist in the company then being organized here and served with Battery E, 120th Field Artillery, during the war, returning to this city with the other local men in the battery in May, 1919. Shortly after his return home he again accepted a position at the Peickert leather store, where he had been employed up to the time of his death. He was a harness maker by trade and a steady and industrious worker. Since boyhood the late Mr SIMPSON had been a great lover of sports, at all times taking a keen interest in baseball, football and basketball. His interest in athletics prompted him to walk to the State Normal last Friday evening to witness the basketball game in spite of the fact that he was not feeling well. Besides his parents, Mr and Mrs William SIMPSON, the deceased is survived by two brothers, William and Gerald SIMPSON of this city and by one sister, Mrs John HOLLIDAY who resides near Winton, MN. Added notes from the Daily Journal: The funeral of the late Thomas SIMPSON, who died suddenly at the home of his parents in this city on Saturday afternoon, was held from St Joseph's Catholic church Wednesday at 9 o'clock. Rev H J EHR of St Joseph's officiated, assisted by Rev J C HOGAN St Stephen's. Burial took place in St Stephen's cemetery.
