Posted on: PortageCoWI Obits Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/PortageObits/905 Surname: GLEASON ------------------------- Michael P GLEASON Obituary as published in the Portage County Gazette on 9 May 1888 (fp) Michael P, the oldest child of Mr and Mrs Michael GLEASON, died very suddenly at the home of his parents, on Water street, last Thursday morning, at about six o'clock, of scarlet fever. The little fellow was sick only about thirty-six hours when death claimed him as its victim. He was nine years of age on the 14th of last March, a bright, intelligent little boy, full of life and ambition, and the afflicted parents deeply feel the loss occasioned by his death, in which they have the sympathy of many friends. The remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery on Saturday morning. Mrs GLEASON is now ill with the same disease, but will no doubt soon recover. Posted on: PortageCoWI Obits Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/PortageObits/904 Surname: GLEASON ------------------------- Mary and Jimmy GLEASON Obituary printed in the Portage County Gazette on 16 May 1888 (p5) Mary GLEASON Jimmie GLEASON The family of Michael GLEASON of this city is indeed sorely afflicted. Last week the death of their oldest boy, a lad of nine years, was noticed in these columns, and again we are called upon to chronicle the taking off of two more of their children, all by scarlet fever, in its most virulent form. At about six o'clock on Sunday morning, Mary, a little girl 4 years of age, died after an illness of only forty-eight hours, and was buried in St. Stephen's cemetery at five o'clock that afternoon. In the afternoon, before the remains were removed from the house, her older brother, Jimmie, a boy of six years of age, was taken sick and died at about three o'clock the following morning, being sick less than fifteen hours. But one child remains, a little girl one year of age. At the same time, both the father and mother have been confined to their beds with sickness, the latter with the same disease, but both will recover. Who can tell the bitter anguish that dwells within the hearts of these afflicted parents--parents who loved their children dearly, and took pleasure in seeing them happy at all times. The sympathy of everyone, hollow and insufficient though it is, cannot but be extended to Mr and Mrs GLEASON. Link: Portage Co Gazette URL: <http://www.pcgazette.com/>

Hi! I am interested in the family of John Warren RAMSEY and Cordelia LEE, who had daughter, Mary Elizabeth, in Portage County, in 1879. (Was the David b. 1877 that was listed in Betty's transcripts Mary's sibling?). John and Cordelia Marie LEE were married in 1868 or 69 in Wayne County, Michigan, and I think they moved out of state shortly thereafter. According to the LDS site, Mary Elizabeth was born in Adams County. I am grateful to Betty who did the pre 1907 birth index for Portage. Helps to have the correct county!! am willing to share info on John Warren's family, IF this is "my" John Warren. He was born in Canada abt. 1845 to Henry RAMSEY and the former Margaret BRUNER.... Thanks Sally Rowe Livonia, Michigan

With its mansard root and columned porches, the "castle" erected by Christina KUHL at 1416 Main Street in 1886 had two corner towers, three stories and 24 rooms. This young man, who was in the 27th year of his age, was born and raised in this city. He was always a very quiet, gentlemanly young fellow, and an industrious worker. Some five years ago he took a trip to Europe for the purpose of visiting with relatives, and viewing the grave of his mother, who had died in that country some years before. On his return it became apparent that his mind was affected, and it was deemed best to send him to an asylum for treatment. The young man was accordingly sent to the Oshkosh institution, four years ago last February, but his case was a hopeless one and medical treatment could not restore his wandering senses. He was confined to his bed for some time prior to Saturday last, when he died. The remains were brought to his late home in this city Tuesday afternoon, and the funeral services of the Episcopal church held at the residence by Rev. W. H. Raymond's parents were Emil Otto Oaken KUEHL & Olga Ottilie SCHULTZ m 1912. They lived in Nekoosa, Saratoga Township, WoodCoWI from the 1930's to present. My KUEHL lineage is short, and starts with Carl "Charley" J REINKE b Mar 28, 1863 Marienberg, Western Germany m in 1891 Whilhelmina "Minnie" KUEHL (sp?) b Sep 1864 Pommerania, Germany... The first I found them in the USA was in Wausau, MarathonCoWI. According to the 1900 Census, Emil had been born in 1889 Germany (some family members state Hamburg) and immigrated with Charley J and Minnie REINKE. My grandfather Emil took his "mothers" name upon his marriage in 1912. Or was adopted by uncle??? At least all records prior to that refer to him as Emil REINKE, while on his marriage certificate, he signed as Emil KUEHL. I don't know true story, but am searching for more clues... CLUES to date: (1) It is possible that Fred J KUHL b Mar 1872 Germany was Whilhelmina's brother as he was their border in 1900, but "disappeared"... Some say he went to Canada to avoid the war. I did notice that there is a Fred J KUHL in St Point, Portage Co, WI that might be a lead to this as these two counties border each other... (2) The REINKE family moved to Cloquette, CarltonCoMN in 1903, and then, after Charley's death in 1916, to Milwaukee. (According to his Obit, Charley had lived in Milwaukee for 15 years upon immigrating to the USA in 1891. This has not been confirmed, but it is known that he was in MarathonCoWI in 1900 and moved in 1903, so the dates are slightly off. Also, in the obit, Whilhelmina had a sister, Mrs DUNNER of Milwaukee, WI who attended the funeral, so perhaps this is why she returned to Milwaukee.) (3) Emil KUEHL married in 1912 to Olga SCHULTZ and they stayed behind, later moving to Nekoosa, WoodCoWI by the 1930s. Emil worked in the PaperMills. While there is another KUEHL family in WoodCoWI, it is unknown if they are related, or why Emil KUEHL moved to Nekoosa, WoodCoWI. While Emil lived with the REINKEs until he was 23, all his records state parents unknown, and he told all his children that he did not know who is parents were, and his siblings refer to Emil as a half-brother, but would never answer any questions regarding his true parents. (4) Since Emil was 3 when Charley and Minnie were married it is possible that Minnie was not married to Emil's father at the time of his birth. Also, it is really unknown if Minnie is the mother of Emil, although since he is referred to as a half-brother of the REINKE children the assumption was made that Minnie is his mother, although Emil denies knowing his mother. (5) On the other hand, Charley might actually be the "uncle", that is brother to Emil's mother... and he and his wife Minnie "adopted" him. It is possible Minnie is not the KUEHL. (6) Since Emil took the name KUEHL, the assumption is that is his mother's real name. But it is possible that KUEHL is his father's name. If you find a connection between your KUHLs and mine, I would be happy!!! While your site looks fantastic, I speak or read no German, and do not do research for individuals, however, I will ask Joan Benner [email protected] if she would be willing to interpret it, so I can see if there is a link to our PortageCoWI KUHL families ... I was wondering if anyone has any definitive knowledge on the Wojak (Woyak) family(s?) in Portage County. I am desended from Ignatius (Nick) Wojak (1846-1924) and Katarzyna (Katherine) Molska (1855-1929) of the town of Sharon. They are buried at Sacred Heart. According to my information Nick's (Ignatius') parents were Anton Wojak and Antonia Zblewska and Nick emmigrated to Portage County with his parents when he was around seven. I have immigration documents for an Anton Wojak who arrived in the US in 1859 with what seems to be a brother Valentine Wojak. There is also another Anton Wojak who was married to Elizibeth Omernick in the Polonia area at the same time but I haven't been able to find any connection between the two Anton Wojak's in Portage County. According to an essay on one of the Portage County history sites, "The Polish Heritage Highway" the Wojak (Woyak) family was one of the first Polish families to settle in the Polonia area. My question is if anyone knows of the connections, if any, between the various Wojak families who settled in Portage County and who were the Wojak's who came to Portage County in 1859. Are all the Woyak's in the area connected? One of my sources says that Nick Wojak was born around Gdansk, but that wouldn't match with the fact that most (all?) of the early Polish immigrants in Portage County were Kaszubs. If anyone can be of any help in this matter I would greatly appreciate all information. I was also wondering if any list members know if Sacred Heart, St. Adalberts, or St. Ladislaus in Bevent have any anniversary books published and where I might find them. I saw a book like this from my wife's family's church in southern Wisconsin, and it was a wealth of information on her family. All of my ancestors belonged to one of these churches. Thank you in advance for all the help I am about to receive. Christopher Delikowski (Wish I was still living in central Wisconsin, but have to suffer here in Louisianna) [email protected]

Thank you for the information on Charles and William PACKARD. William may be the brother of my ggrandfather, Charles, but I still have to do more research to prove the connection. Charles was listed in the Town of Plover, Portage County 1860 census as a river pilot. According to information I have, he rafted down the Mississippi and walked back to Portage County. Still need verification of this interesting story. Nancy Packard Thompson

James CARPENTER also left NY to put his experience as a river driver to work on the Wisconsin. He ran the river every season from 1855 to 1860, until suffering an accident that required the amputation of a leg. He couldn't run rafts over the river any more, so CARPENTER entered politics and held county office for many years. I am not related to nor have any additional information on these surnames. R/S MAK
