FYI From: [email protected] This is forwarded with permission. Please share with other USGenWeb Project lists. Tina Vickery SC WIGenWeb Project _______ Subj: [WIGEN-L] Family Discovery jumps to Prodigy Date: 3/9/01 1:04:09 PM Eastern Standard Time From: [email protected] (zorblitz) Reply-to: [email protected] To: [email protected] True to their history, Family Discovery was getting "heat" for their business (mis) practices and have now jumped to Prodigy and are also using PayPal (info from the Belgium list). Their last server is thought to have dumped them after receiving numerous spam complaints. This company is thought to go to Gen sites of all kinds and pick the e-mail address off them to use for spam mailings of the $49.00 "service". In their spam, they say that another Gen site has suggested that they contact the recipient, when the original gen site does not even know it has been used for the addresses. Please consider encoding the e-mail addresses on sites into the name so they can not be easily picked off the pages. It means an extra "click" for visitors but the spammer's programs only "see" a name and no addresses to pick up. Here is the latest followed by a summery of recent events for anyone who wants a quick update on the matter. It looks like the fictitious Family Discovery genealogy service has moved to Prodigy now. I contacted Prodigy this morning and they have asked that anyone who receives solicitation email from familydiscovery.com to take the following steps immediately: 1) Forward the entire Family Discovery message to: [email protected] 2) Include the following information (most of which was provided by Rita from the Oconto County, WI list): Please note that the attached message is now being sent through your ISP service. They have been reported to various State Attorney General's Office on computer fraud, but it is hard to catch up with them. Originally the "company" linked to free information sites and placed the pages in "frames" so that it looked like it was their own work. Customers paid for that information. The scam, now, is paying for the free information links and then they "move" frequently and leave their paid-up customers without services. 3) Post these same instructions on any other lists today so that Prodigy has a better chance of finding the spammers. From: "Derick S. Hartshorn" <[email protected]> This has been going on for nearly six months. There is a web page dedicated to reporting details about this operation. Gene Olson has taken it upon himself to try and shut them dowm. Hi! For those of you who automatically went to look at the new pages by Maryls, for some reason the URL I gave you isn't working as it should. So I got hold of Tina and she got me a speedy answer... (YEAH TINA!!!) I have linked it as: (which was standard before Rootsweb upgrade - grin) ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wi/wood/bios/LHS-a.txt and now it only appears if linked as: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wi/wood/bios/LHS-a.txt BTW, this applies to all files in the Archives, not just WoodCoWI, so if you can't get it, just replace the first ftp:// with http:// and you should get in. So, while we are trying to decide if this is a temp or permanent fix, if you really want to see the pages, they can be accessed from the main directory at: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wi/wood/bios/ Sorry for the inconvience, but if we didn't have anything to b^&*^& about, then when great things happen, we wouldn't know the difference (grin)... But I will be glad (estatic jumping with joy) when all is fixed... R/S MAK ASC WI __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Posted on: Portage County WI Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/Portage/10968 Surname: GERBER, PRAIS ------------------------- I recently read the obituaries posted on the GenWeb site for PRAIS. I have been researching the GERBER surname for some time now. I recently started on another of my ancestors Mathias H GERBER. Mathias married his second wife Frances PRAIS. Mathias was living in Minneapolis and I was told he went to Stevens Point to get married. I am also told that they had at least 2 additional children. Mathias's first wife died in May 1912. >From the 1920 Hennepin Co. MN census I have: GERBER, Mathias H. age 51, addr: 718 16th Ave No., occ. Bookbinder Frances W., age 43 born Germany (na) Lucille, age 18, file clerk Carl A., age 15, working in Bindery Co. Paul, age 14 Martha, age 9 Roman, age 8 Cecilia, age 4 10mos. I would like to find their exact marriage date and also try to determine what happened to any of Mathias's children. I am also publishing a GERBERr Family Newsletter and would like to contact any additional family members who wish to receive it. Tom GERBER
I am proud to say that thanks to WoodCoWI's numerous contributors to our Archives, our index was so large and took so long to load that we got a new look... Please go check it out at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wi/wood/wood.htm Be sure to query your surnames in the Archives search engine and find out where your ancestors information may be lurking on the internet... Also, a gigantic thank you to Maryls MANLEY STECKLER who transcribed all the LHS (Lincoln High School) graduates and donated them for use on our pages: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wi/wood/w-lhs.htm I just checked and the names are showing up on the search engine already!!!! This is a great way to check for children and see who is here and when they graduated... WOW, Maryls thank you so much!!! PortageCoWI Archives still has the old look, but the search engine works there just fine, also... To use it, go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wi/portage/portage.htm R/S MAK __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Im a graduate student working on a Masters Degree at the University of Wisconsin-Stout and have been working on my genealogy since 1989. I would like to ask for your help in completing my survey on genealogy research, genealogy travel, and use of the Internet for genealogy research and travel located at http://www.uwstout.edu/survey/richardf.html Please scroll through the survey as there are intentional spaces in the survey. Your responses will be completely confidential and the results of the survey will be maintained and protected by rules administered by the University of Wisconsin-Stout and in compliance with applicable state and federal laws. Again I ask you to please help with the research project by completing the survey by clicking on the following link: http://www.uwstout.edu/survey/richardf.html Please scroll through the survey as there are intentional spaces in the survey. ______________________________________________ FREE Personalized Email at Mail.com Sign up at http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup
F, No, HOWGS wouldn't have that, but perhaps the cemetery has a recorder that you could ask the info from? I got my DunnCoWI cemetery map (with grave sites) from the Clerk of Courts... Hm, or perhaps you could write to the Cemetery, the only listing I found in Marshfield was City Cemetery PO Box 727 Marshfield, WI (715) 387-1571 City of Marshfield: http://ci.marshfield.wi.us/ I know we have some Marshfield people on the mailing list... I will post again, and perhaps they can respond with an address or ideas on how to get this... I do have a map of the cemetery with each section, but not with the names of the people on it... That is what you wanted? He has been Town Clerk for the past four years, also Justice of the peace and Clerk of the School Board. Well, the good news is the USGenConnect Boards are back up. The bad news is that some of the boards are missing all the February posts (yes, both WoodCoWI and PortageCoWI are affected)... There is nothing I can do at the moment. They are going to restore it with the backups, so PLEASE do NOT NOT NOT resend the February posts!!! Wait for them to fix it (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE)... BTW, My box is filled to the gills with posts and queries from during the "time out" so please give me time to deal with them, and we'll get our counties back on track shortly ... If you have concerns, please read the notice(s) that are being posted at: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/ Thanks.
