Posted on: PortageCoWI Obits Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/PortageObits/10942 Surname: BURR, FERRISS, KILBOURNE, WEBSTER ------------------------- Charles WEBSTER Obit printed in the Stevens Point Daily Journal [Stevens Point-Portage Co-WI], Monday November 12, 1923, Page 3 Column 1 Charles WEBSTER, d. 1923 DIES IN THE WEST--Charles WEBSTER Expires Suddenly in CA A telegram received on Sunday by Mr and Mrs Emmons BURR and Miss Anna FERRISS announced the death of Redwood City, CA, of their brother-in-law, Charles S WEBSTER, an early day resident of Stevens Point and who is kindly remembered by many of our older people. Mr WEBSTER passed away Saturday afteroon at the age of 75 years. His death came suddenly as a letter written to area relatives in the past couple of weeks stated he was in medium health. Mr WEBSTER came to Wisconsin from his native town of Bangor, ME, in the early 70's and made his headquarters in Stevens Point as an employee of the Wisconsin Central Railroad. He afterwards went to Phillips and engaged in the furniture and undertaking business, remaining there until his entire property was destroyed in the big fire of 1894. Mr WEBSTER then went west to Spokane, WA, his family following within a year. For many years he was employed as government inspector of timberlands, his special duties being to protect holdings owned by Indian tribes. Because of his exceptional ability in forestry work, his services were retained for two years beyond the age set for retirement. For the past three years he had lived with his only daughter, Mrs E I KILBOURNE, at Redwood City, some 30 miles south of San Francisco. Mrs WEBSTER, who was Miss Genevieve FERRISS, died April 11, 1912. The only other near relative of Mr WEBSTER is one sister, Miss Rena WEBSTER of Bangor, ME. Six brothers preceded him in death, two of them within the past couple of years. Joan M. 3. Jean, Good question. Yes Portage County WI borders changed several times. In 1818, WI was still the MI Territory, there were originally only two counties - Brown and Crawford. In 1929, the area was split and Iowa county was formed in the southern section of what is now WI, and in 1834 followed Milwaukee Co. MI Territory Map is at: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/united_states/us_terr_1830.jpg In 1836, with the forming of the WI Territory, 16 more counties were formed from the counties of Brown, Crawford, Iowa, and Milwaukee... Of them was PortageCoWI, made from parts of Brown and Crawford Counties... WI Territory Map is at: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/united_states/us_terr_1840.jpg WI State Map is at: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/united_states/us_terr_1850.jpg So from 1836 to 1846, PortageCity was in PortageCoWI... The final change to Portage Co WI was in 1856 when the county was split almost in two, with the west half converting to WoodCoWI. And the eastern half remaining PortageCoWI Hope that answers your question. 3. Posted on: Portage County WI Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/Portage/11093 Surname: MEEHAN ------------------------- In land and lumber, pg 45 and 46 is a reference to James and Patrick MEEHAN. Furthest downriver and still in the county was the Meehan Brothers mill just down from the mouth of Mill Creek in Linwood. Starting in 1857, James and Patrick MEEHAN, Irish immigrants by way of Canada logging camps, used islands in the river to build a boom in which they held logs floated down Mill Creek prior to milling. The Green Bay and Western tracks ran on the other side of the river but the railroad built a spur down to the bank and the MEEHANS brought lumber across the river on a scow they built for the purpose. This laborious procedure came to a halt in 1884 when the MEEHAN's supply of logs ran out and they closed the mill. Here is some other information on the surname MEEHAN, note that I only searched for Michael MEEHAN, and in cases where I found limited records or PortageCoWI MEEHAN's included them, as well...
