My first posting on this list. Looking for history concerning my great grandfather. STEVENS, Philander. Estimated dob of 1818 - possibly in New York. Oral family history puts "relatives" in/founding of Stevens Pointe, WI. His son, Alva Stevens (my grandfather) was born in Cadillac, Michigan in 1880. Have hit dead end - can't go back beyond Philander. Jim Stevens Vicksburg, Michigan

This family went to La Chute, and Chatham, Quebec. A jump to Michigan or new York is not unheard of for the families that moved into that area. Alvah and Philander are very recuring names in this family. DAnny

Hello all, I found this entry in the "Wisconsin Deaths, 1820-1907" database on Ancestry.com. Name: Louis Johnston Death Date: 01 Jun 1899 County: Portage Volume: 01 Page: 0261 Reel: 108 Image: 2488 Index Volume: - Sequence #: 182202 Wondering if anyone on this list has access to this film for a lookup. My Louis Johnston (or Lewis Johnston) was married in 1858 in Monroe County, WI. I've been to the gravesite of his wife, Maryette (Getman) Johnston, who died 24 Jun 1897 and is buried along side several of their children, in Warrens, Monroe, WI. He is not buried with the family according to cemetery records and headstones. I've been working on this line for 20 years and have never found anything about Louis/Lewis after the 1880 census. His wife has no obituary or death record. Perhaps the Louis Johnston above is the one I'm looking for...as his children were all grown when his wife died he may have gone to Portage county after 1897... Would very much appreciate any information someone may have on this Louis Johnston :-) Best wishes, Bonnie

Is there any way to find out information about someone who farmed in the Rosholt area in the 1930s or early 1940s? How about Lutheran church records? My grandfather (b. 1869) grew potatoes and had some chickens and livestock. His name was Hans Andreas Hansen and his wife was Sophia/Sophie Hansen. Thanks for any information. Daryl Ann

Uncle Joe says that Richard/James Joseph was killed on a train but have been unable to locate any confirmation on this.I ordered some newspapers Microfilm from Minnesota hoping to find info on the Dunphys in there but could not locate anything.I have been unable to verify where Permelia and James/Richard died.I will definitely keep your info in mind and be looking for a connection.

RICH Edwin F. RICH, the youngest son of Charles RICH and Nancy PUTNAM, was born in the town of New Berlin, Chenango Co., NY, July 9, 1823, and died at the family home at Bancroft, Portage Co. Wis., May 3, 1902 of apoplexy, aged 78 years, 9 months and 24 days. He was married to Sarah L. BANCROFT Oct. 13, 1852 in the State of New York. In 1856 they came west and settled in the town of Pine Grove, Portage Co., Wis., where they have since resided. To them were born four children, three of whom, with the wife and mother, survive him. The children are: Caroline, who was the wife of John RADCLIFFE, and who died in 1873; Francelia, wife of Wm. VALENTINE, Charles H. and Benjamin RICH. For nearly fifty years Mr. and Mrs. RICH were permitted to tread life's pathway together, sharing its joys and sorrows, and enduring the privations of pioneer life, and later enjoying the results of their united labor. After a day of usual activity, Mr. RICH retired at an early hour as his custom was, and at once fell asleep. After a little time it was noticed he had ceased to breathe and then it was discovered this his was the Sleep of Death. He often talked of the end and said he was ready to go home. He served as a private in Co. F, 43d Reg., Wis. Vol. Inft., enlisting in 1864 and serving till the close of the war. The funeral services were held at the home at 10:00 a.m. May 6th, being conducted by the Rev. F. H. Harvey, of Plainfield, Wis., the text chosen being St. Luke 12:40 "Be ye therefore ready also," and the remains were laid at rest in the Lone Pine cemetery. His record may best be told by the fact that those who knew him best were his closest friends.
